I don't think this was Mitch's call!

The thing that guys like McClure miss is that they're a niche audience. Most sports fans do just want the scores and to talk about who should start for the Bears. The fans that want to think of themselves as "smarter" than everyone else is a limited group. Though you might not know it by reading this board.

I've said for a couple weeks Dan has been shooting him daggers whenever he talks over a Dan point, a Dan read, a Dan "moment". He's not doing it on purpose...he just doesn't know when to let the show have some "air".

The slot will be better with the combos people have listed in this thread. Maybe Jason gets an invite back to his old role, a role he was very very good at-Dan's foil, drop player, alternative voice from the two hosts. Maybe he just goes elsewhere. It's too bad...he could have been good.

The show's foibles are well known. I think Bernsie will be better with a better partner. I'm excited about this.

COF i think that you just hit on one of the key things. Goff's and Bernstein's NBA talk was in essence nothing more than a referendum on Lebron James. Their NBA discussions are weak. I love the NBA but I learned a long time ago that Goff wouldn't be a go to guy for me. He wasn't particularly knowledgable and his information tended to be that of the fake insider. Over the top and repetitive love of Lebron while screwing the rest of the league. Spiegel was more knowledgable in my opinion then either he or Bernstein and he's more of a baseball guy.

I think people also got tired of the comparisons of Michael and LeBron in which Dan and Jason always favored LeBron. Whether it was on the court ability, his body, or his willingness to speak out on social issues (Dan always ripped Michael's neutrality), I think it was a turnoff for a lot of meatball fans (even if much of it was true).

You are exactly right LTG. Especially about Meat. Anyway, I have always felt the over the top Lebron thing was a troll job by Bernsie to forever fire up Jordan fans.

The thing I kept going back to when talking about why B&G wasn't working was fun. The show rarely felt fun or light. Even the comedy segments were just, there. Nothing ever felt like it had time to breathe and you never felt like you were listening to guys having fun and largely, even if you don't 100% jive with the content, can make a radio show work.

That’s what blogs and podcasts are for, not big radio stations in major markets. Or any markets.

Dan used to claim Kobe was going to end up better than Jordan. As with a lot of his trolling though, I think he grew to believe the stuff he used to say just to be provocative.

I loved the show where Goff, and Bernstein to some extent, played the Rizzo comments from Spring Training about the school shooting. They were pissed at Rizzo for not being activist basically calling into question his impact. So while everyone else thought Rizzo had (and has been) pretty solid with his activism and charity work, they are ripping into him for not carrying a sign in DC.

It just shows how disconnected they are from reality. They wanted Rizzo to do to his image what they had done to their show- torch it with half the fan base.

He's an evolved smart sports fan.

Like JORR said, he's the minority when it comes to sports.

Yep. And with the core sports radio listener demo, I'd say it's more than half. They're like Hillary Clinton calling people "deplorable".

Holy shit.

How very inneresting ... particularly with this change out in front of the imminent 7+ month run of Pat Hughes saying "The Chicago Cubs Are On The Air" MANY times in the afternoon.

Don't know about the terrestrial signal, but almost every other commercial break is the entirety of Jason mangling (for fun) the Bears song ... I only mention it as they played it just now.

Chet (the poster) is a good man with good thoughts, as is his custom.

Seeing Blackjacks take the place of the old Talisman was a surprise when I visited home after being out West for a while.

I didn’t like the B&G show but for obvious reasons, I’m not going to celebrate anyone losing their job right now.

i agree particularly regarding the meatball Jordan stuff. For me I just got tired of Lebroncentric NBA talk. I can remember the Dallas/Heat Finals for instance. I called in. Goff was still a producer but in essence he was a third host by that time. Rather than being an affirmation of Dirk Nowitski's greatness it became about the missteps of James. It became old as all they sought to talk was Lebron James. Their NBA talk was essentially nothing more than a coronation of Lebron James

Spiegal was just re-upped. I suspect he had wind that heads were rolling and decided to be out of the office today.

The thing that guys like McClure miss is that they're a niche audience. Most sports fans do just want the scores and to talk about who should start for the Bears. The fans that want to think of themselves as "smarter" than everyone else is a limited group. Though you might not know it by reading this board.

I believe Matt and I are the same age or close to it but I'm probably closer to you on this than I am to him. While I don't give a shit about the scores I enjoy good sports debates. I don't want to get my political talk from sports shows. I think the younger demo may want it all though.

Correct. We are brooding over content. Content is irrelevant compared to tone.

Bernstein moved the station from "Fans Talking to Fans" to "On Air Talent Talking at Fans". The Golden Era of the Score was defined by fun on air talent engaging fans who became popular parts of the show.

The hosts in the GE weren't exactly pandering either. However, when a person had a crazy thought it was made into comedy with "See Ya" or a Hendrix clip. Now your thought is a referendum on your intelligence.

The fans that want to think of themselves as "smarter" than everyone else is a limited group. Though you might not know it by reading this board.
