If I'm remembering it right Hood was initially upset with the title of show. I also think that Telander was afforded some sort of special treatment too. Telander was totally disinterested in doing radio. That is sort of how I remember it.

It started out as Hood's show. He was the headliner and it was doing well. Then they brought in Telander and named it something like The Rick Telander show with johnathon hood. He had every right to be upset.

That is how I remember it too. I also believe that Hood was upset that they in essence awarded Telander his own show without ever having worked in radio.

Did they promote that your mornings got a lot dumber?

We joke a lot about Sir Larry and he's not someone I need to listen to, but he is a professional broadcaster. The best thing that ever happened to his career long term is probably that bernstein didn't go to bat for him to replace Terry. There's a lot of luck in life. Blessings in disguise are a real thing.

Telander was a best selling author, prize winning journalist, a decade as TV sports talk guy....his resume was loaded. For Hood to get all pissy was ridiculous.

Yeah, Hood openly and sometimes viciously antagonized Telander on the air.

Wouldn't you, though? I can't personally blame him for that, though professionally it's different....

That was just an awful show. Telander went off on these weird stream-of-conscious monologues apropos of nada, and Hood was clearly annoyed with him. Then J. Hood would try to make it seem like he was joking, but sometimes you can't back off that. Telander had no business being there and was kind of a throw-in.

He also had no interest in doing the job as I recall. Didn't he used to miss work a lot?

You left out boring. Not a good radio guy--he was oddly inarticulate--and his thoughts depreciated badly. I used to think he was interesting, but as he aged, he got . . . I dunno.....uninteresting. He used to have cool things to say. Then he stopped having cool things to say and he rambled. HIs writing in the Sun-Times turned to godawful.

But being a newspaper guy doesn't really translate to radio. Look at the titans- North, Mac, bernstein- how many were newspaper guys? Mac, sort of I guess. And Boers was, but he was terrible.

Hood and Buffone worked together over the summer "and had great cohesiveness," Hood said. "Then there were rumors during the Olympics that we might get a third member."

That member turned out to be Telander, the Sun-Times columnist, former senior writer at Sports Illustrated and author of books such as "The Hundred Yard Lie."

Still, Hood was surprised to learn it would be called "The Rick Telander Show."

"It was sprung on us," Hood said. "They said they wanted a quote bigger name."

Telander was terrible on that WSCR. I think the CTE may have already kicked in.

But whatever your job is, the boss brings in some high paid industry star and you get shafted....probably the worst thing to do is cry like a bitch and actively undermine the bosses' pet.

Telander proved he had no understanding of modern sports talk radio during his brief run on the Score, but his eccentricities and ineptitude weren't the source of Hood's hostility.

Hood made it clear that he despised Telander almost from the opening moments of the initial show. My understanding is that Doug and Hood weren't given advance notice of Telander's insertion into the lineup and only spoke with him for the first time a few minutes before going on air. Hood resented this abrupt programming shift and displaced his anger onto Telander rather than discussing his (legitimate) gripe with management. That began a downward spiral that has resulted in his extended stay in radio purgatory.

That story shows that mismanagement at the Score is not unique to Mitch.

Bernstein has to own some of this as well. He may actually be demonstrating that he can't get it done without Terry. When Boers was on his game he drove that show. I think that is what has come out of all of this. It seems that there are people on here that are enamored with Bernstein but he doesn't do it for me either. He is devoid of personality and he isn't interesting enough to be a non-sports sports guy. He doesn't pull that off too well. He doesn't seem like the type of guy that has had enough in the way of life experience to make his life seem interesting.

Bernstein is best when he's not being serious about sports. The clearinghouse of airchecks on YouTube proves it. But he's come to believe that sports are a very serious battlefield for social issues and that data-driven management of teams is also of utmost importance. (You can find both of these tendencies in modern online NBA fans.) But then when he descends into identity politics and stat crap, you have to ask: how is a rich guy with an English major an authority on either of these things, anyway? Shouldn't have to come up. Just be entertaining.

I agree with this. The only thing I'd add is that he can be very good when he does serious radio. He just has no concept of when to stop. Maybe that's why I like him.

It is not exclusive to Online NBA fans actually. This trend started with Baseball and Football. The score used to run shows on Fantasy Football. There was nothing worse than hearing some guy discuss the statistics of players on his fantasy team.

Boers was interesting when he didn't discuss sports. He had stories that were of interest and his experiences in the newspaper business did provide a sports hook to them.

Bernstein talking about the Cubs Stadium issue or Wrigleyville alderman were not of interest to me. There were a number of other things as well but it just seemed that they'd lost their way and it was obvious that they really didn't prepare either

What is stupid about my argument? I didn't mention fighting racism anywhere. I simply provided the history of black sports radio hosts in this city, while missing Norm Van Lier as I believe he was before my time or at least I never heard him on air. This triggered you.
