The five of us at work on the 2nd shift get carryout/delivery every Friday night. Some kind of rotation of Tonys Place, Pizza4U/Cemenos, Chefys Kitchen( my brother is Chefy himself! #Igotaguy), China Cook or whatever.

So when discussing the evenings menu, we agreed on burgers. Portillos is obviously the correct answer, but Rte 59 location was deemed too far to drive. Once checking the Heroes website, the Waygu burger stood out and a couple of us ordered it up.

Doing the shorthand Joliet West math in my head of 5 people at $15 per, throw in 6-7 bucks for tax, puts the bill in the low 80's. When ordering, the burgers and sandwiches come with chips and there was an upcharge to fries. I tried my best to stay in my chair while laughing so hard. Unbelievable.

Go to pick it up, sign for it and notice the bill is almost a hundo. I think ok, $2 per for the fries, i can live with that. Since I am a simpleton and hungry, I just grab my order and leave. Only when divvying up the bill after the meal do I scroll and see a $5 carryout fee at the end. Motherfucker!!?!!

If you are ordering from a restaurant where a server or bartender is bagging your food, then I think you should tip a small amount. But if I am doing carryout at a Chinese or pizza joint that has an established carry out process then I am not tipping. Now if I order a hundred dollar worth of food or something out of the norm then I will tip a little something.

I am slightly surprised and pleased at this thread. Usually when this topic comes up you have some aggressive people claiming you should always tip and that people are being cheap for not tipping.

Yeah, if you put a jar out I'm probably not gonna put anything in it. But if you take care to put my order together perfectly and give me napkins, forks, etc., I'm likely to give you a buck or two. Also, I have tipped in the McDonald's drive-thru on occasion when they got my order right quickly and didn't demand that I pull up to defeat the entire purpose of using the drive-thru.

My issue with some forms of tipping is not because of money, but because it gets out of hand and inconvenient when you have to constantly think about tipping people. I don't like having to wonder whether I should carry cash at all times so that I can tip every single person who helps me in the slightest way. And I'm sure I've unintentionally offended some people by not even thinking about leaving them a tip.

Pro tip, though: when at a hotel, tip the maids every day, even if it's just a buck. Your room will be immaculate when you get back. Sometimes I'll randomly leave a 20, and they almost always leave a thank you note and some kind of gift like candy or free waters. Pretty cool.

I don't tip carry out but wouldn't surprise me if people did in Chicago. As someone said, it might be a Chicago thing and it doesn't surprise me because it's a good thing.

Being away from Chicago and living in different locations for two decades, I miss the good mannerisms of Chicago people. Like someone opening the door for me, someone saying thank you when I open the door for them, and other niceties.

That's why whenever someone finds out I'm from Chicago wherever I've lived, it usually follows with , 'Love Chicago, the people are so nice and courteous there'.

I usually pay with cash for carry-out. I always put the coin part of the change plus a buck or two in the tip jar.

The only place where I used to tip on carry out was Lao Schezuan in Downers Grove back before old Tony had to go to the slammer. I'd tip them 10% rounded down to the next quarter, my typical bill was about $28-$29 and I'd tip them $2.75. But the hostesses would be working very hard on a Saturday night and I never had to wait long for my order once they saw the tip line.

When I was waiting tables a decade ago I had to work the curbside station one night when the kid called in sick. This was in Naperville.

Got a 150 carry out order. Put it into the system, bagged it up, and put in all the condiments/accessories. Some bleach blonde 40 year old rich housewife pulls up in a BMW 2 series convertible.

I load everything into her car for her and give her the bill. She puts a line through tip and signs it. I wanted to slash her tires. If you can afford 100+ in curbside then you can spare 5 bucks.

So normally I don't tip on carryout but if you are taking it to my car I can spare something.
