Spiegel and Bernstein would have been interesting because Spiegel might have called him out on some of his nonsense. Obviously Herron is better than McKnight. I've never been impressed with Mac or Parkins.

And since Spiegel is under contract, I'm shocked they didn't try "Spiegel and Bernstein".

Like I said, better to have a radio vet go with Bernstein. Not McNight who is vanilla to being with and thilled that this fell in his lap. He's gonna be Bernstein's puppy dog.

It seemed like a heart felt piece albeit a bit dramatic. I took it as a shot at Mac.

I didn't read it as a shot at Mac either. This is a definite shot at Bernstein and/or Goff:

How could it not be a shot at Mac? Jay Leno left and then came back which pushed Conan out. If it wasn't a shot at Mac it is a massive mistake to use that metaphor.

Maybe. I just didn't read it that way, but I can see why MANY are saying it is. I just think Spiegel is smart enough to not take a shot at the new Alpha at the station if he wants to remain on-air as a fill-in or otherwise. Perhaps he felt he was subtle enough, but his subtlety can't get past you.

Well, its not overtly insulting, lIke Goff's work. But Spiegel, in general, is this overly emotional, sappy drama queen. I do think a lot of us can be too cynical and "tough" sometimes, but come on - there's a limit. And Spiegel went over the limit a long time ago. It also comes off as sooooo self-important.

From my perspective, it's too bad because he has decent sports thoughts.

I think it's more insulting than Goff. It's all manufactured bullshit. It's like that engagement post. I'm gonna say all the right social things, I'm sensitive and strong, it's gonna be so great, cuz I'm so great, and righteous, unique, and special. I'm doing it right. I feel things so deeply. It's a shot that he can claim he meant towards Leno if challenged. Weak. He's always stopped short. He was supposed to challenge Bernstein on the Kane stuff one transition, then apologized.

I agreed with this at first—Spiegs telling Bernstein “he takes the fun out everything” could have been good radio. However, I don’t think these two guys like each other, and that lack of chemistry would have grown old pretty quickly. The art of disagreeing without being disagreeable.

It was clearly a shot at Mac, later a bit at Bernstein and primarily at Jimmy deCastro. For all of the gleeful handwringing around here, it appears that the only reason Mac is back is his buddy got the top job. Chase Daniel would be proud.

Meatpants would not have lasted 2 weeks with Bernsie.

He pouted after a few mins with him in transition.

But I do think they respect each other. Spiegel has complimented Bernstein. He's just willing to fight with him at times. That's all. No big deal. McNight won't do that.

I think it would have worked very well. They would have been #1 in that slot for their target male demo. No doubt in my mind.

For the record I like Mac and think he improves the station. But that doesn’t change the fact that he was helped by a high ranking friend. It happens all the time in every industry. Do you disagree?

Look at Stern and the fights he has with Gary, Jackie and Fred. It's good radio. But Howard respects all of them because he's kept them for 30 years. You have a fight and move on. It's good radio.

And the fights wouldn't be for the entire show. They would have civilized sports talk as well. Obviously.

It was a miss by the SCORE radio execs. That would have been the best move. Both new shows would have been good.

They only kept Goff and Speigel around as the backup plan when Mac goes apeshit and quits or gets fired.

He may have been helped by a friend. He also might have found a new boss who saw declining afternoon ratings and a free agent radio host who is also the most successful sports radio host in the history of the city. Doesn’t take a friend or a genius to put two and two together.

Bu you gotta admit you specifically threw water on all the talk of Mac coming back and how source-less it was. Given that and your comments in this thread, if you like him you have an odd way of expressing it on a sports radio message board.

I don't know. Mac might have himself together and he sounds as good as he did 2007 and before.

I’m pretty certain I said I believed Mac was coming back. I did question the likelihood of other major changes (and clearly I was wrong). That said, I don’t think my comments are bashing Mac. I would rank him as my 3rd favorite host. That doesn’t change the facts surrounding his return though. He is there (IMO) because of his relationship with the new boss. I’d bet he’d agree.

But you’re just being dishonest in this post. You implied he was as qualified in his profession as Chase Daniel is at his. At least be honest.

You’re now nitpicking an analogy on a message board. My point was that his relationship helped get him a job. And that stands.

Don’t get pissy when called upon opinions such as “the only reason Mac has a job is because of his buddy.” Especially if you’re gonna walk back such opinions to this degree when asked about them.

Most people have jobs because of relationships. Sort of how the world works.

There is some irony in all of this.

Now Goff and Spiegel are both victims of Mac in their delusional minds. They both blame him for being fired. So now they can unite in hating Mac because of it.

Which is funny because Spiegel and Goff hated each other before this happened. But this common hate for Mac has trumped their hate for each other. So now they love each other.

This weird scenario only happens with SCORE people.

Oy vey.

Looks like MANY were just itching to kick Spiegel when he's down. Nothing wrong with his post. It was thoughtful and he thanked the customers.

Matt, saying or implying that you were "hung out to dry" by your new boss (read: Your Employer), even while factual, kind of eats into whatever good will capital you had garnered both generally and at the station in particular. You could have, and IMO should have, made your statement without that, especially with Goff willingly making a heel of himself on Twitter about the whole thing. Maybe you're more secure in your contract position even post-transition, I don't know.

Also, holy shit I hope you haven't deluded yourself into thinking any kind of podcast even nominally promoted by a radio station is going to feed your need to perform or your need to eat and provide for your family. You don't just put on a podcast and make money, just like you don't—apparently—put on a ratings success at WSCR and expect to keep your daypart.

My only question is: Did they offer to have you work with Bernstein, and did either of you turn it down?

You could tell that Mac knew that picking Spiegel as his partner was a mistake early on.

Spiegs kept getting his contract renewed after sympathy plays in the management office I bet.

The Score's only problem it it took them so long to make moves like bringing in Parkins and erasing Bernstein's contempt-filled, omni-cynical ass from the Marquee.

Goff? In my opinion, his best work was as J. Hood's DJ. No doubt about it. That was some great ass radio.

I also didn't mind him when Goff and Drinky did a few shows with just them back in the late summer of 2008. Then, all of a sudden, POOF - they blew that idea up and we never heard them together again.

It also should be pointed out in the last month or so he let his girlfriend try and effect content on the radio show so it's not like he was a great partner to Parkins even near the end.

Nice post by Grimace. Overdramatic and sappy as expected but that's who he is.

Grimace got screwed big time on this re-shuffling. Hope everything works out for him.

They were kept around because they are under contract for a decent period of time and are being paid anyways. The station needs for fill in hosts all the time, and their salaries are a sunk cost.

Just can their asses. Why aren't they doing weekend shows or podcasts? If they weren't fired, why haven't they done anything since the changes happened? What's the hold up?
