I thought of this thread this morning when my dog grabbed a piece of bacon from my daughter's plate. He has never done this in his life. We trained him from a pup not to. Not sure what happened but when I told him to stop, he put his head down and walked off. Once in five years isn't bad. I think we might have forgotten to feed him.

Nas, one thing that was helpful was when he was a pup... I would have him wait for a release for his food, but I would have him do the same for treats or anything. Set pieces of food in front of him and pick it up every time he goes to eat it. Only allow him to eat it once he sits and you give him his release word. Probably good for kids to do with him... it takes some patience. Definitely pays off if you drill it early, though. I could throw a piece of food at his feet and he won't eat it until he looks over and I tell him okay.

I'll have to give this a try. I realized that I over fed him the first day.

When do you crate your dog? Why? Seems like something that makes them sad.

dogs actually like the crate. Put a blanket over the top of it and it becomes a very nice and safe retreat for the dog. I don't have a crate anymore, but even at 12 years old when Lionel goes to daycare he often goes on his own into one of the crates to take naps and relax.

As puppies, you should always put them in a crate when you leave them alone until they are housebroken. The crate helps with house breaking because no dog wants to pee/poop where they are sleeping so it helps them learn to hold it until you get home. Granted with puppies they should be taken out ever couple hours becaus of their bladder size so I wouldn't leave them in the crate too long.

I'll give it a try. He likes to roam freely. He's tried to break out of the saddle.

He chews on my clothes socks but outside of that there haven't been any issues. The woman I got him from had potty trained all of the dogs. If he doesn't make it outside quick enough or at 3 in the morning he'll piss on the pads. That's a relief because Lady Nas wanted to kill me when I told her I bought a dog a day before I was going to pick him up.

What did you feed him as a puppy?

My guy had a sensitive stomach as a pup so I would feed him the prescription food, but eventually I was able to switch him to Science Diet Light and he's been eating that ever since and hasn't had any problems.

Give the crate a try, he'll actually like it and you won't have to worry about him roaming around chewing on everything when you're gone or sleeping. Labs are very mouthy, they love to chew. My guy claimed a cell phone when he was a few months old and chewed on any wooden furniture he could find for a little bit, but he grew out of that pretty fast.

My dog still loves to soft mouth and if he's excited to see someone he will grab their arm and chew on it softly. This is a lab trait, but not all labs do it.

The dog can't sleep if he's not in my room or he doesn't have an article of clothing that I've worn in his bed. That's kinda weird to me.

No major issues. All the females in the house are afraid of him because he chases them. The baby and the dog share spoons and sticks.

Grain free is a scam. They just load it with potatoes or lentils or something

There are recipes on the net. I fed raw ground beef eggs in shell a little rice and a little greens of some sort. Blended up. Cost wasn’t so far off premium food but kind of a PITA

You need a chest freezer and buy chicken at the mexican grocery stores for 39 cents a lb.. Chicken and chicken bones are great bang for buck.. You just defrost the frozen chicken, venison, beef whatever the day b4 in fridge.

Wrong numbnuts.. Dogs love bones and they are great for them, you can't give dogs any cooked bones of any kind..they can splinter.

Your vet is a fuckin dope, what do you think dogs ate for 10k years before kittle? Most vets don't know much about dog food anyway..they get seminars from purina, ukenuba, iams in vet school. The B.A.R.F. diet is as healthy as you can do for your k9.

We've always given our dogs raw bones. Great for the teeth. Never had an issue. Giving them cooked bones will fuck them up instantly.
