As others have, a gift card is just an inherently tacky wedding gift. It makes it worse if the couple getting married knows where you got it from.

You once set someone’s house on fire with a frozen pizza.

Attempted. I was unsuccessful.

Park didn't "re-gift" anything! Those gift cards are payments for services rendered. An appearance earns a card for $50. And Sports Talk Live gives 'em to several restaurants. You know how far $50 goes at RPM or Harry Caray's? Depending on one's commute, the commitment to do STL is about 90 minutes. In other words, Park worked about 6 hours for Spiegel's wedding gift.

Would I do it? Likely not... but I don't find it offensive. Spiegel knows that show can pain your ass and his former partner donated FOUR appearances for a gift.

That's just not true, Mac. They are, at best, a bonus given to unpaid talent. When you send an intern for coffee or Nembutal and tell him to get one for himself, you're not paying him for getting coffee, the cup for him on your dime is just a gift.

(Because I love chiming in super late in a thread people are done with...)
There's no doubt the gift card thing was super tacky.

However, the best rebuttal I've heard through all of this is... the "It's his third marriage!" argument. Is that not perfectly commensurate with a gift card?

Fourth marriage the groom should pay you.

Not a handful of gift cards you got for trying to raise your coinage in Chicago sports media circles.

Gift cards are basically money. You work for money and then can regift that money to others.

Just to be clear...if he bought a $200 gift card out of his own pocket, would that have been OK?

Holy Cannoli, miss a week miss a lot.

I assume the majority of the communication regarding this between Pakins & Spiegel is taking place on the Twitters?

Spiegs should have just let this go.

I can only guess but Matt initiated this by going public first?

By doing that, it sure doesn't make anyone involved look favorable whatsoever.

Oofah.

I think that would be more in the spirit of gift-giving, yes. Whether a gift card is proper for a wedding (regardless of lap number) is a separate question.

1. Parkins let out first on Can't Do It, then belabored the point after the segment.

2. Spiegel tweeted about it once, as far as I know, in response to someone who heard the segment and brought it up with him.

3. Parkins invited Spiegel to call into the show to discuss it further.

4. Parkins had the producer actually call Spiegel.

Thanks for the info/clarification, JLN. I missed a couple of days last week.

You’re making JLN’s argument for him. Money is good anywhere.

Practically speaking, I've always thought gift cards were stupid for that reason. They're basically just a way of saying "here, I put some thought into this," but they're more restrictive than just giving cash. Really, gifts in general are stupid unless you make them yourself. At least that entails effort.

But yeah, still no problem with the gift card. Gift cards are dumb, but I don't think it's tacky. It's tacky to expect gifts at your third wedding.

Not unless you can transfer them to anyone who can receive full value.

I am glad at the end of the day we can all agree that Parkins is great and Meatpants is a whiney douchebag.

Glad Mac could help us come to this realization

lap number matters. The purpose for the gift in the 1st (and sometimes 2nd) marriage is to not only celebrate the couple, but to help them out as they start out life together. I don't think that's needed for #3 or later. Thus the previous radio segment I mentioned where Roe and Garry tore into Liza Minelli for having a registry when her 4th wedding planned.
