That's because most doctors (except Dr Ken) are completely narcissistic assholes with God complexes.

Congrats on that, although I have to send my condolences on two points:

1) Physics? Are you kidding me....that might be the hardest major. I still remember Physical Chemistry 344. We had tests in that class where the highest grade was sub-30% correct. That was the toughest class I ever took, and I was a science whiz back in the day (5 on AP Chem and 4 on AP Physics exams).
2) UIUC, ugh.

:)

But seriously, that is awesome. I am very happy for your son and wish him all the best. My wife and daughter went on a campus visit there in March, and they really liked it. Of course I refused to go, and they think I am crazy for my opinions about the place.

I can't argue. I know a few that fit that exact profile. Seriously though, as a parent, I would have never been able to handle that. My wife had a minor issue during her pregnancy and I obsessed over it for five months. You would think doctors would understand the impact of their words.

I think at the end of the day, many doctors spend so much of their time giving people bad news, that they have to coldly desensitize themselves from the situation, or they would be completely ruined mentally.

I have a friend who is an ER doc. They are trained to phrase things very specifically because MANY times the family/friends are so distraught that they cannot understand what is being told to them. For instance, he must say that "Jane Doe died today." He cannot say things like, 'she passed', or 'she is no longer with us'. I guess certain things have to be very blunt because otherwise they could be misinterpreted. One time, after a bad car wreck, he told us that he literally had to scream at the top of his lungs to a husband, "Look you're wife is dead! Do you want me to take any and all measures possible to try and save the unborn baby?"

But no two cases are exactly alike and telling somebody to "go home and cry" seems especially cold-hearted.

Its probably a legal reason too. If you give a person hope, you have to worry that they will sue you or something.

Yeah. I've gotten some bad news from doctors regarding my kids and they knew how to deliver it. It definitely mattered, and still does.

The whole phrase was “your son has Autism (which, turns out, he doesn’t - Jenny McCarthy and I learned how to cure that) go home and cry and tomorrow you’ll start working on a plan of treatment.” or something like that.

“Go home and cry” was all my wife heard.

Our 3rd son actually does have Autism, so in that respect it did prepare us.

That would have been more accurate.

But, at least to me, not a very well-known term at the time.

Yeah us either. In the end reality was some hard work and difficulties and OCD tendencies which luckily have been more beneficial than troublesome.

Two of my kids have been diagnosed with autism, but one is more of the Aspie type, and I hope things work out for her--and so I am glad to hear it's working out for your family. Scary goddamn stuff.

Yeah Tommy as far as the spectrum is concerned and my daughter we were fortunate. It’s not really the best way to put it but it’s almost as if she grew out of it.

Last story - it's not the Dr. Ken thread - related to the Dr. Go Home and Cry woman.

She was a renowned Dr. in the field at that time which is why we went there. She sat on one side of the room with about 6-8, I don't know, "residents", sitting around her. We sat on the other side, my wife and I and some of her family, about 5 of us.

There was a play area off to the side where Dr. Ken Jr. was playing. Having a good time.

About 75 minutes into this discussion, Dr. GHAC tells me, we've been here over an hour and your son has never once come up and offered you a toy to play together.

10 seconds later, Jr walks up to me with a toy car, right on cue, and offers it up to me. I look at the Dr. She looks at me and says, "I would have expected him to do that 20 minutes ago." That's when I knew this was all bullshit.

So, when she told my wife to "go home and cry" about her diagnosis, I just got the hell out of there and said we are doing something else here.

My son is going to state in the 4x400 relay and the 800.

I quote his track coach...”he’s the fastest little white boy I’ve ever seen.” That made me smile.

Somewhat related, its amazing how genes work. My kid got all of my cross-country skills and kicks ass at long-distance, but like me, sucks all kinds of ass at track.

Hope you really enjoy watching your kid run the state races. There's just something wonderful about track and field.

Thanks. Congrats to young Dr. Ken, too. A future Loomis fixture.
