I'm really trying to like Kap over the past year or so but he really does come across as a dude with severe "small man's syndrome".

He was on today talking about how his wife and him will be going rim to rim on the Colorado River. An excruciating hike that he has been training 6 months for. He had ESPN's Marty Smith on to tell listeners how dangerous and draining such a hike can be. Kap said he was talking to his guy at REI about the trip.
The day I step in an REI will be the day I have a huge bowel movement that I can't hold any longer.

I have been an REI member for like 25 years and have bought:

1) a rain coat before a trip to Mexico, and
2)waterproof matches for my son's bug-out bag.

Isn't that the company that actually stuck to a family values theme & keeps their stores closed on Thanksgiving and ridiculously early the next day?

Your son is a doomsday prepper? Does he have a silo buried in a field in Central Illinois filled with spam?

That sounds right. I just wondered if they had stopped selling guns or something and got people all riled up.

Personally, I like all the outdoors clothes. I don't visit Colorado but I do wear it when I go fishing in the midwest.

I go to REI a couple of times a year, usually before a long trip when I need one or two things which a Target/Meijer won't have.

I have four of their house brand mid-weight long sleeve t-shirts, which they insist on calling a "base layer" shirt for some asinine reason. But they are very warm and do a good job of absorbing sweat, and they are good for doing a lot of outside walking when it's under 50 degrees. I used them when I was in London/Paris in April and was very happy with them.

They also have very good socks (although you can also order anything you find there online from other web sites like Campmor), and I can usually find some decent travel packing stuff in there.

I once bought a defective waterproof wallet there.

I want to do a backpacking/camping trip with my son but,
a) don't know what I'm doing
b) getting set up with equipment from scratch is going to cost a fortune for something we may only do once.

That sounds like the big learning how to scuba dive escapade my dad aborted early enough with minimal cash outlay. It was originally his idea alone. An 11 yo me was pissed for exactly one day and moved onto other crap with my buddies.

I found out several years ago that long underwear is no longer called "long underwear." It's now a "base layer."

I went there several years ago to check out their bike selection when I was looking for a new one. I drive by that location every day on the way to work and didn't notice it was closed.
