Had it for the first time yesterday with the family.

That's a damn good fast-food burger. The place was so crazy busy that it ruined the food experience at the time but in retrospect, it was quite good.

Small world. I was going to go there for lunch yesterday (for the first time), but there was no parking. We ended up going to Fatso's Last Stand instead, which was really good.

The burgers and shakes are REALLY good but WAY too expensive. I guess if I lived in Kenilworth it wouldn't be such a big deal.

For fast food burgers, right now my preference is Good Stuff Eatery. Also one of the few places right now in the city that has Nashville hot chicken sandwiches; though, they are opening something in the Mart soon that looks promising.

Just tried Petit/Small Cheval for the first time today. Tasty, but I'd prefer Redhot Ranch or Fatso's for the price.

I meant that I couldn't justify the $20 I spent on burger, fries and a shake. For that I'd prefer Kuma's with the beer over the shake.

Tried this place today in Old Orchard. Awful. Don't know how you guys liked this place. Burger was fair, pretty much tasted just like a Wendy's burger. Barely got a hint of the shack sauce so have no idea what it tastes like. Fries were awful, same level as Culver's bad fries. Shakes were worse than McDondalds. Couldn't tell the difference between the malt and the shake.

And the prices were ridiculous. $30 for 1 double cheeseburger, 1 hot dog, 1 fries and 2 shakes.



I would rank this place below Wendy's but above Burger King.

I definitely felt like a world class sucker afterwards. Already knew in advance that the place was supposed to be expensive so was prepared for that, but wasn't expecting the food to be so vile.

Tried their new location on Michigan and it was one of the worst burgers I had. I'm wondering if they switched their meat in their original downtown location after the first week because it was really good the first time I had it.

Though I love a good burger, I have to agree with this. There's not a whole lot of difference. My favorite take-out burger might just be a single cheeseburger from Culver's.

All the "great" burger places are nothing special. Red Robin, Five Guys, That Burger Joint, Meatheads, etc are all basically very similar. There's not a lot of customization to a burger.

I would probably prefer a burger cooked at home over charcoal to anything else.

I think the one place I do like to order from is Smashburger...but the only one I ever get is the Windy City (cheese spread, spicy mustard, fried onion rings on a pretzel bun).

I'd say it's debatable. If I had a choice of my favorite steak or favorite burger for my last meal, I'd have to think about it. The thing is, in my opinion I make a better burger than any restaurant -- but I cannot make a steak as well as the best steakhouses (mainly due to equipment and their access to prime beef).

I've gone to Shake Shack elsewhere twice, once on the Upper East Side on a 95 degree day when I didn't care what the food tasted like as long as I got out of the heat, and once at a Washington Nationals game where I just got a milk shake.

I don't get the fuss.

My goal for the summer is to get to Red Hot Ranch, it's in a location which isn't convenient for my travel patterns. Right now, the best burger in town for me is the Paradise Pup Merkt cheeseburger on dark rye, which I get with just ketchup and extra grilled onions and I think is still around $5. The only problem is that they are closed Sundays.

That's funny cause I go to RHR all the time and love it, but my goal this summer is to make it out to Paradise Pup and finally try that place.

FYI, there are 2 RHR locations so maybe one is easier for you to get to than the other.



RHR double with cheese is IMO the best burger in Chicago. I've had bigger, fancier and far more expensive, but pound for pound, nothing tastes better than the RHR offering. They also have as good of fries as anyone.

What do you do for your burgers? I like a liberal amount of Montreal steak spice, plus the requisite garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and egg.

I go with a chuck/brisket blend (15-18% fat) from my butcher. To shape the burgers, I don't touch the meat with my hands, but loosely form the patties using just a knife and fork -- I've found that forming them with my hands makes them too dense and doesn't let the heat flow through evenly. The patties end up about 1/3 lb. and 5/8" thick and are cooked just the slightest amount shy of well done, with a good crust. The only seasonings I use on the meat are generous amounts of kosher salt and black pepper, added just prior to hitting the frying pan (if added too far ahead of time, the salt will draw out the moisture and inhibit browning).

For the buns, I butter a bakery roll (top and bottom) and toast it in a separate pan.

Half the time I go without cheese, but when I do, I prefer Muenster, goat, blue, or pepper jack -- added at the very end for 15-30 seconds with a cover on the pan for proper melting.

For sauce, I use mayo blended with a bit of mustard and sriracha. Only other condiment is raw onion.

That recipe is just the one I make most. While I'll have bacon or an egg on a takeout burger, I normally don't do that at home.

My favorite restaurant burger is the umami burger (with mushroom duxelle, togarashi mayo, bacon, smoked gouda) from BopNGrill.

I just had that for the first time last week. It was very good, but maybe a little too rich. I ended up not finishing the final 1/3 of it.
