Oh wait, it's not.

Actual game or the thought that maybe, possibly Odell Beckham might be traded? Maybe we can have another scintillating discussion about whether Jay Cutler is a great QB or not? man that is sure to light the lamp. How about whether he is still an NFL QB? Whoo that will move the proverbial needle.

It will more than discussing last night's Spurs-Raptors game. There was a show that just got canned because their covering of those actual games drove listeners away.

We need look no further than the failure of Bernstein & Goff to see that your premise is faulty.

More people complained about their "SJW" stuff then they did basketball yet in the need to spin basketball became their great undoing. What will it be next? Drinky's sex life.

I forgot in your rather convoluted way of thinking "NBA" and "SJW" are synonymous. The only reason people watch the NBA is because they wish to be "Awakened". It can't be because they love the sport itself. Nah they want to be on the cutting edge of Social Justice movements.

Game 7's have the advantage of being built up for a few weeks with added storylines and intrigue. That's why ratings in general go up towards the end of the series and they don't go down because people get bored after the first few games.

If I use the highest rated game of the NBA finals what do you think it would do to "College Basketball"?
In 2017, the CBB championship game averaged 23 million viewers on cable. Game 5 of the NBA finals averaged 24.5 on ABC. It averaged 20.5 million for the series. That's not a big difference when you talk about cable vs network coverage. When CBB was still on CBS it was beating most NBA Finals games. Anyways, the larger point is that college basketball isn't that important that NFL coverage should be shelved for it even if the NFL is in the off-season.

However, this year I'm sure the NBA Finals will beat the CBB title game but this was an all-time low for CBB given how lopsided the title game was and also it being on cable.

It's because it makes your argument about the tv ratings look bad.

Im probably not gonna read all the rest of this but this is a flawed argument.

If the NBA playoffs were a one and done tournament the ratings would crush college basketball.

How are you figuring that?

Yes, of course, but that doesn't mean that an NBA sudden death tourney would "crush" college basketball. There are a lot of college sports fans out there, and one of the reasons the tournament is popular is because college basketball is just popular.

Game 7 in 2016 had 31 million viewers watch.

This year's college basketball championship game had 16 Million viewers.

I only use that because it was a sudden death situation. If the same thing occurs this year we can use the numbers from this year's game.

Yeah. There are millions of people called alumni who have an interest in the tournament as way to get together with old friends through a shared history.

This, and in rural areas, college bball is just more popular than the NBA. People in central Illinois generally cheer for UofI even if they didn't go there.

That sounds like Drinkys life story. Rooting for something you could never do yourself. Root for colleges cuz he didn't go to a college. Root for professional teams cuz he never played sports. Root for job opportunities he could never get. He was born to watch better men do things he wanted to do. Cuz he's a dumbass.

2016 was also the most that have watched since Jordan retired. To compare that to a blowout this year is laughable. At least compare it to the year before that had 23 million on cable instead of network tv.

The Final Four this year wasn't competitive which hurt ratings but in 2017 when the games were good they did 14.7 million for the first one and 18.8 million for the second one with a total average of 16.8 million. The Cavs Game 7 averaged 13.3 million on the same network. The Warriors Game 7 averaged 14.8 million. This is the best comparison as they were both semi-final, winner take all, competitive games on cable.

So, there is no reason to think they aren't pretty close in interest level and you aren't going to talk college basketball over NFL very much whether in season or out of season in Chicago.

i could use the excuse that NBA ratings were lowered because the games were held over a holiday weekend but I'm not. You can continue to spin this into another discussion but I'm not. The mere fact that no one wants to discuss the actual issue (NBA vs Out Of Season NFL) talk is all I need.

The next time that McNeil gives one of his patented "wake me when the Finals are over" speeches remember this as you remember the Alamo. Heard him say he is actually into the NBA playoffs so maybe he is evolving. Or maybe he has money on the game?

I'm open to the idea I'm wrong here but it seems to me college basketball has one of the largest disparities between postseason and regular season ratings. To me that indicates the format of the postseason is a factor.

I don't think that is really true.

ESPN averaged 1.62 million for regular season NBA. College basketball is harder to judge as you get a range that includes smaller conferences along with the big boys. If you combined ACC and the Big Ten you'd likely see a higher average rating than the NBA does. ESPN routinely has games that get above 2.5 million viewers for those contests. For instance, the Champions Classic in November averaged 2.8 million over two games. Duke-UNC and other featured games normally do around the same. Now, I'm sure if you include the Wichita State and Memphis games they show that it lowers it significantly.

Well then the NBA was stupid to plan to have both Game 7s during that time. You should let them now how they had ratings be "severely depressed" by doing that.

are you interested in discussing why the NBA conf. Final ratings are higher than the NFL draft or not? I know it is a rhetorical question but I felt a need to ask anyway

Are you interested in why the NBA finals will be rated higher than the NCAA championship or not?

Of course you have to include all the games. Or else let me single out Houston/GS and Cleveland/GS games and compare them.

I agree if you exclude all the shitty rating games the ratings look better.

Right. I think you’d get at least a fraction of that same thing happening with a NBA tournament.

Ok, but then I get to pick 4 teams too. There are probably 100 teams that play on ESPN in a given season. That's why it is better to use two conferences since it at least gets the number of teams to a more comparable number.
FavreFan wrote:

If the NBA had 100 teams and 4 times as many games on ESPN then those average ratings would go far lower too.
