Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final drew 6.02 million viewers in the United States. No game of the NBA Final drew 30 million people, I don't think.

Yeah, that's close enough to five times. But NHL fans know that to the extent that the league is ever going to be on equal footing with the other leagues, it's only gonna be there in and around its member cities east of Kansas City and north of Washington. It'll never be a national attraction and shouldn't be. It's a weird midwestern/northeastern niche deal. Fortunately, that's the part of the country that's cool.

Even in Chicago when Hawks were clearly > Than the Bulls, it wasn't that way nationwide. And as we've seen that was a TON of bandwagoners.

Still, the fact is that NFL in and out of season >>>> NHL.
