Mac, I liked to hear your thoughts as well as your partners about the Dolphins coming out days before the draft and announcing they have drafted their #1 pick and signed him?

Don't you feel it should be announced on draft day with all the whistle and bells that surround draft day? Id like to see the NFL mandate a rule that your pick can not be announced until your on the clock.

The Draft has become as big if not bigger than the Super Bowl in some ways and the air has been let out of my ballon a bit with announcing the first pick already.

Hey Mac:

My neighbor thinks that the bears should draft an O-lineman. I think that they should draft a QB of the future like Brohm from Louisville.

I would like to hear your thoughts along with Jurko and Harry. I feel that my neighbor should agree with me. I mean WTF, it's the neighborly thing to do, No?

It's probably next to impossible to keep these things quiet. Don't worry, Miami will take 10 minutes to announce that they have selected Jake Long, despite signing him today or tomorrow.

Well what's stopping the Falcons , Rams , Raiders and Kc from picking up their guys and signing them . Just seems that teams are jumping the gun and setting a bad precedent for future drafts..

The ratings are thru the roof and you now have two major networks that carrier the draft live in ESPN and the NFL network not to mention the live radio coverage and unless you've been dead the last 5 weeks the media coverage on this has been hyped as much as the Super Bowl.

I was personally looking forward to the surprise of all 99 picks on Saturday, but now that only the last 98 will be unknown it's not worth it.

They should just cancel the whole thing. We know where one of the Longs will be going.

This isn't the first time a team has signed the number one overall pick before the draft. I don't see a problem with it. The team is going to have to dish out a crap load of money for that pick, so for them to decide and have that individual all wrapped up before the draft is ok with me. Plus, the team is guaranteed no holdout. Once they've decided that they won't trade the pick, let them do what's best for them. The draft is about more than just the first overall pick. Plus, Long will still get his name called, get his photograph taken at the podium, and still go through all the post-draft interviews.

I have no problem with what the Phins did but I think the NFL as a whole would of liked to have had the announcement happen on draft day and let the so called experts make all their inside information blabber as to who has made the calls to the Phins to trade up and grab the #1 over all pick and now the great Mel Kiper now can tell us that he had Jake Long going to the Phins the whole time.

It is cheap mid day programming during a lukewarm sports period. Some people care very passionately about it but it gathers none of the casual interest associated with a Super Bowl. I'd like to see what kind of ratings it gets, as even those with a medium to strong interest rarely watch the entire first round. I would say that the draft pales in comparison to an average regular season suday in football. Even people on this site, presumably the people who would be most interested in the event, have no care for it.

Personally, I like the draft. I like reading about it before the event. I enjoy reviewing the results from the day. However, I would not be all that concerned if I did not witness a single minute of the coverage.

That does not tell me all that much STU. At some point over an 18 hour period 34 million people turned on ESPN for an unspecified amount of time. I have a feeling interest peaks in cities when a team is about to draft and then has a signficant falloff after the pick.

My point is that 34 million people tuned in. Im sure those numbers are not in rounds 4 thur 7. The FIRST ROUND LAST YEAR DREW ALMOST A 5.8

Again, getting back to my first point and that is this thing grabs hugh numbers and the Dolphins letting the cat of of the bag takes a bit of the luster off the draft and also in building a bridge to having the first pick being announced ..

Having the Mario Williams vs. Reggie Bush debate a few years back made for great THEATRE and had the nfl buzzing that morning of the draft and set up a great draft debate that is still going on today on who should of went #1. I can honestly say after two years that Vince Young , Reggie Bush and Matt Lienart are disappointments and Charlie Casserly looks like a genius for grabbing Williams first.

Stu, Mario Williams had a deal signed with the Texans the night before the draft, so your whole "theatre" argument is DOA.

Charlie Casserly let it out two days before the draft that he was going to grab Mario Williams.

So much for drama.

I know that Magellen..That was the whole point of that years draft. It was not announced untill that night and it was great THEATRE as Bush was projected to go #1. Bush was looking to hold out and that was the reason why they went the other way.

Got any others? Because the list of every other positions "can't miss" busts goes dozens deep, and those are basically just about the only two OTs (along with Mike Williams a couple of years ago), one of whom was actually decent as a guard and was drafted two decades ago.

Hey now, he got screwed by going to the Raiders. Any other team he's a Pro Bowler. They screwed with the kid too much early. You're our LT, oh wait, we have Sims, you're our RT, no wait, LT, no wait, RG, no wait....I blame the Raiders as much as Gallery for his issues. Since they hunkered him down at guard, he's been pretty good.

Explain how the "Theatre" took place on Friday night when the draft coverage didn't start until Saturday morning Numbnuts? The fan reaction in Houston and New Orleans didn't take place until Bush fell to the Saints on Saturday and Vince Young falling into the Titians laps as he was maybe thought to be going to Houston as well. The word I use "Theatre" is used to describe excitement one of anticapation or story line.

Im done entertaining the masses on this topic and please have a point or or a clue when you want to argue a point as for a select few are worth my time debating a topic on this forum.

Why is that a bad precedent? Are holdouts a particularly good thing?
