you know, during my years of arsenal fandom i've found myself all too often muttering "just don't go out like bitches" and today i can confirm that argentina indeed went out like bitches. this was punctuated by that one dude basically kicking a croatian player on the ground (with the excuse of "half-missing the ball" =) right after they gave up that deplorable third goal.
you know it's bad when a goal gives you mikel arteta flashbacks. during his final few years @ arsenal i noticed that arteta was way too often that guy who'd trot into frame in slo-mo at the end of opponent's goal replays; argentina had a few guys guilty of this on that horrible third goal where it was basically a 3 on 1 (or 2 if you count the goalie) and after the initial save that kicked the ball out wide it was like "where's the rest of the team? *raises fist to the sky* ARTETAAAAAA!!!!!" and sure enough, yeap, it's hard to miss from that range 2/+ times when you've got a 2 man advantage with the goalie off of his line.
so yeah i think the group has croatia sitting atop with 6pts, iceland with 1pt and 0GD (i figure they play nigeria tomorrow) argentina with 1pt and -3GD, and then nigeria taking up the flank with 0pts but that 1 game with iceland in hand. the funniest scenario would be if croatia remembers the argentine player kicking their teammate and there's a draw between iceland and nigeria to clinch first place for croatia; so then when they go into their final game with iceland it doesnt matter if they lose so they can essentially go out there and toss the game to iceland to knock out argentina. that'd be hilarious.
otherwise, sheeeeit, if iceland doesn't lose tomorrow things get awfully dicey for argentina. that -3GD kills them cuz now they've gotta get their win by at least 2-3 goals... and if you've watched argentina it sure seems like they're gonna have a hard time getting 2-3 goals in a game... let alone winning by that amount!
i heard something like argentina hasn't failed to advance past the WC group stages since 1958.... i also heard that on the cusp of blowing the qualifying for this WC argentina changed their dumbass system to one where the manager assembled a team around messi to "let him do his thing" and thus they got the win, got in the WC, and of course promptly reverted back to the retarded system that nearly had them choke away qualifying for this WC.... and the results? welp, let's just say that cristiano ronaldo is the GOAT because it's beyond official now. it's a far cry from the 2014 WC tournament where it felt like FIFA was doing everything to sell you on messi's exceptionalism cuz we're living in cristiano ronaldo's world now. there's a reason the dude sends his own personal hairstylist over to madame gireaud's to do the hair on his wax statue, you know =D
btw if you wanna see the classiest of class goals check out luka modric's goal from today that put croatia up 2-0 on argentina. there's not much you can do when a guy goes HAM like this._________________
