The Bulls could've tried to pay a price to climb their way up for somebody potentially more dynamic than Duke forward/center Wendell Carter Jr. but ultimately were content to lock in somebody considered certain to be good at the very least. It's a solid and safe choice in the way that has fit the John Paxson model over the years, a well-regarded prospect from a major program who's expected to be a hard-working professional.

Bulls fans could have done without the ESPN comp being Carlos Boozer -- the collective shudder palpable from here -- but it seemed to be meant as a compliment and not an ominous prediction of lead-footed defense and along with the rugged physicality and rebounding prowess.

Michael Porter Jr. was there for them, but sources tell 670 The Score that the Bulls evaluated his medical reports thoroughly and deliberately, and signs at the moment point to a thumbs-down from their doctors, an opinion seemingly shared around the league regarding a player once believed to be a top-three selection at least. Porter fell to the Nuggets at No. 14.

Carter may now be viewed relative to Porter, which isn't exactly fair when the difference is medical. There are levels of risk involved regardless of prognosis, and a front office must act on the best advice of those examining the player and/or interpreting the imaging. An executive overriding a "no" from the people with medical degrees would be making a reckless call in this case.

You're the same guy who didn't like Paxson relying on solid, safe Duke guys.

The Bulls weren't good enough at being bad enough to earn a real chance at becoming great.

The Bulls are whatever they say they are until they aren't at which point they never were.

That was before the Score got the Bulls. If the Hawks came back, Danny would talk hockey a lot more

Seems like a solid pick. Their backcourt could use more shooting.

Hopefully.

Valentine is a legitimate NBA rotational player. I don’t think this guy is.

Beerstain proved he could do a job for a team when he greased the skids to run Brandon Marshall out of town years ago. Now everyone knows he can dress up the company line with some shostak caliber vocab words and wow the rubes with the "smart people perspective."

I'm pretty sure earlier today Dan agreed with a caller who said "hey roll the dice on Porter and if he redshirts you get another nice pick next year" -- BUT the really smart people (medical people) have spoken and, Uh meatball, this is a business that they run here and as such it's be damn near morally reprehensible to not listen to the REALLY SMART PEOPLE.

Honestly the bulls were too chickenshit to admit that they wanted a player complimentary to what they already have (provided LaVine doesn't leave) -- when you just tanked a season to get a guy that your radio guy says "he can live with" akin to "I could live with only one lung or kidney" well.... REALLY SMART PPL SAID NO! VOCAB!

For everyone not liking the Hutch pick, who did you want at #22? I want names, not "anybody but Hutchinson"

Reading KC's column about the Carter pick and what a "well-worn path" it is for the Bulls to be taking a Duke player just makes me even more depressed. I don't even have it in me to joke about how the Bulls should give away these picks for cash like they did with Bell.

Right off the bat I'll say the very next pick, Aaron Holiday. Also Zippy's guy Musa.

CBS gave the Bulls B's for both picks. Two solid players that are are ready to play now.

Lakers take Mo Wagner

Wouldn't mind the Bulls scooping up Trent Jr. if he goes undrafted

Fantastic! the Bulls were on the cusp of title contention so this should push them over the top.

Yeah "well-worn path" sums it up well. Once the bulls traded Jimmy Butler it felt like they were going to try and do something new coming off of "the three alphas" era.... And now this pick makes it feel like your "three alphas" are Lauri, LaVine, and Dunn. I can't reiterate enough that having your radio guy flat out say "I can live with [your lottery pick]" sends out a message of settling in much the same way you settled for Kirk Heinrich when Miami drafted d-wade...

...or how you settled for Carlos Boozer after the Wade/Bosh manwich got de-immanentized.

Even if Porter ends up being Oden 2: Electric Boogaloo I think most people would understand that the bulls tried for upside, taking that risk to reap a potential reward of a top 5-10 NBA talent/player. What's the reward of the pick they got? He's not Dougie McBuckets?

Ah well, either way I look forward to a smarmy cocksure Señor tomorrow morning wearing his "team insider" hat to say/not-say that it was 5sure a medical decision and given that the bulls DELIBERATELY went through MPJ's medical exam (as opposed to all those accidental going throughs) and have REALLY. SMART. MEDICAL. PEOPLE. who are PAID to make decisions, well when you run a BUSINESS you gotta let em make these decisions...

...even if it outs you for having no balls because you'd sooner accept 5 years of safe/secure/profitable NBA Hell than risk one more year of lottery-bad to potentially land a player who could be the #1 guy to get you past NBA Hell cuz once again: we've seen this movie before. It didn't get good til you got gifted a top-of-the-lottery talent, which is what you passed up to potentially get.... What, a slightly bigger and/or slightly better Bobby Portis?

<< evidently I'm not allowed to post a picture of the Japanese guy holding marbles from major league 2 >>
