There is this strange logic game that many people want to play where we say racism is this huge problem, and if you even ask people to clarify their thoughts then you have to assume they are racist, which is the clear accusation by FF here. Maybe Rick can deputize you.

There is also a need to say nothing is ever racist and even once established it becomes so what "deal with it". Easy to say when you aren't the one adversely effected by it.

What laws do you want changed to make society more “equal”? What specifically do you “deal” with because of racial bias?

Saying the stand your ground law is racist is stupid. There were zero controls on that study, and the law does not say shoot black people.

Also the study seems incredibly faulty, the cited Dooley case has this reported by the Tampa Bay Times:

Quote:
But three witnesses, including the 14-year-old skateboarder Dooley was trying to shoo away, testified that Dooley first flashed a gun at James, then pulled it from his pants when James stepped toward him. They said they didn't see James choke Dooley. They said James tried to wrest the gun away.

So no, not at all like the Trayvon Martin case and not a very good invocation of the SYG law.

Quote:
Ackermann et al. underline the urgency of this endeavor in their study. "We have made a lot of progress since 1787, but this halving of the odds of being found guilty of a crime if the victim is non-white is an eerie reminder of the infamous three-fifths compromise."

yeah today the perception of a white person acting out against a non white person is going to be seen by most through the lens of racism.

if you are going to do it, you have to immediately go find a white person to do the same thing to .

Do you think these statistics have anything to do with it? https://www.channel4.com/news/factcheck ... mmit-crime

And you said drug laws and stand your ground. Ok. What other laws do you want to change? How do these laws affect your day-to-day?

When I was about fourteen, I knew this chick who used to pronounce statistics as "sassistics." And she used the word all the time.

He isn't a "it's never racism" guy. It's that many in society have become so comfortable calling anything "racist" that they don't even see how ridiculous they sound, and he is simply pointing it out. This is a perfect example.

Why is it so important that the laws "effect me" in order for me to care about it? That is stupid.

If it effects blacks then it effects me. If i were to ask you to list the ways in which you have benefitted from being a white man in this society would you do so? Does it have to effect you in order for you care?
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... h-carolina

Racial biases have effected me in order ways than simply the legal system..I'm not a criminal so illegal activities won't effect me as much.

If you want examples i can provide them however.

I was once detained in a holding cell and processed because a guy with a similar name (but not the same name) had a warrant for his arrest out on him. I provided ID ironicall enough which clearly illustrated that i was not the guy and they told me that it was a fake and took me in to be processed anyway. If i were white I'm convinced that this doesn't happen

At FRONTLINE’s request, Roman analyzed the pool of 43,500 homicides by race in states with Stand Your Ground laws* and those without them. Because he wanted to control for multiple variables — the races of the victim and the shooter, whether they were strangers, whether they involved a firearm and whether the murders were in Stand Your Ground states — Roman used a technique known as regression analysis, which is a statistical tool to analyze the relationship between different pieces of data.

This means there wasn't enough data to actually support any claims, so the guy built a statistical model, probably based on conviction disparity between whites and blacks, and applied it to states with SYG laws and the number of interactions that fit the data. This means any conclusions are incredibly dependent on how the model was constructed (if black people represent a larger percentage of those convicted of murder and the like, does it also not follow that they will be convicted of murder even if SYG is invoked?) and the size of the sample to which the model was applied.

Quote:
So the disparity is clear. But the figures don’t yet prove bias. As Roman points out, the data doesn’t show the circumstances behind the killings, for example whether the people who were shot were involved in home invasions or in a confrontation on the street.

Additionally, there are far fewer white-on-black shootings in the FBI data — only 25 total in both the Stand Your Ground and non-Stand Your Ground states.

Yeah, that's not very reliable. No accounting for whether the white-on-black shooting instances were the result of a felony being committed, AND a projection based on a sample of only 25 instances that are completely devoid of context is bad, very bad, science.

And hey, remember that asterisk in the first quote of the report? Here's what it means:

Quote:
*Roman considered any state with a broad self-defense law to be a “Stand Your Ground” state, although states have passed different variations of the law and some states didn’t enforce the laws until the end of 2009.

So we have no idea if SYG was invoked or enforceable in the 25 instance sample this guy used to extrapolate an entire data set. This is irrefutably bad science.

Here you go again disputing something just because it doesn't affirm something that you happen to believe in. You don't think there is ever bias in anything (unless it happens to discount a frivolous claim made by you)

The study is biased but no one else (on the affirming side for you at least) can ever be biased. Its old at this point.

It's affect when used as a verb.

And I don't have any guilt about being white because I have no control over it, and I am not going to publicly flog myself for your entertainment over the accident of my background.

As I suspect you have no real point other than seeking out some sort of revenge for a past neither of us had any control over. You need to put me in my place as a white person, which is what a group on the left has declared their cause to be. I do not find it productive or humanist in anyway. It also eliminates the need to learn anything about the individual. You have zero idea what my backstory is or my family history. Instead you have decided to say you are white. You are privileged, which is the opposite of what trying bring individual freedoms was supposed to be about.

Content of character, not color of skin.

Yes, a faulty study will be pointed out as faulty by a rational, sane person.

Here you go again disputing something just because it doesn't affirm something that you happen to believe in. You don't think there is ever bias in anything.

The study is biased but no one else (on the affirming side for you at least) can ever be biased. Its old at this point.

I refuted specific points of the study. If you cannot rebut me on those points then shut your mouth.

It is the same old dance. I can produce 10 such studies all saying the same thing and you'd attempt to dissect them with some meticulously languaged bullshit that essentially amounts to nothing.

Anything can be disputed. That doesn't make you knowledgeable. It likely it renders you nothing more than a linguistic idiot.

I love how you think you are "breaking it down for the laymen" out here yet you don't even know the simple value of a damn decimal point.

I will provide other examples related to these studies. Feel free to discount them

By the way i didn't bother to read the jibberish that you spewed because it is too predictable at this point.

So you have no idea how I refuted your study but you know it's bullshit.

I find this thread interesting. JLN and WFR are by far the two biggest “white people are basically never racist” posters here and WFR specifically said his definition of racism would need to include actively trying to harm a minority. So yes, if she was a bitch to all races but reserved calling the police on innocuous actions to minority kids, that would qualify - and make it relevant.

The other thing you should understand JLN is that most of us aren’t wannabe lawyers and this isn’t a court of law. I don’t need to prove anything. All I’m saying is that I think GoldenJet’s inference is reasonable.. You being the “it’s never racism” guy that you are, of course you disagree. That’s it. We aren’t going to agree on this.

He isn't a "it's never racism" guy. It's that many in society have become so comfortable calling anything "racist" that they don't even see how ridiculous they sound, and he is simply pointing it out. This is a perfect example.

It does nothing other than to piss off white people and infantilize minorities.

No. You're just wrong on this.

Clearly, saying racism isn't just a ploy to end discussion. Yet another example.

End discussion? I discussed this all night with JLN. This post makes no sense.

No you are just wrong is a way to end a discussion without making a relevant point.

When I was about fourteen, I knew this chick who used to pronounce statistics as "sassistics." And she used the word all the time.

No matter the conversation, she was always like, "Well, sassistics say . . ." It was really annoying and no one ever schooled her on how to pronounce the word because we thought it was some kind of lisp and we didn't want to make fun of her.

Voter ID laws? You don't have an ID? For nearly every instance here you could say hurts the poor. How do these laws affect you?

Why is it so important that the laws "effect me" in order for me to care about it? That is stupid.

If it effects blacks then it effects me. If i were to ask you to list the ways in which you have benefitted from being a white man in this society would you do so? Does it have to effect you in order for you care?

Racial biases have effected me in order ways than simply the legal system..I'm not a criminal so illegal activities won't effect me as much.

If you want examples i can provide them however.

I was once detained in a holding cell and processed because a guy with a similar name (but not the same name) had a warrant for his arrest out on him. I provided ID ironicall enough which clearly illustrated that i was not the guy and they told me that it was a fake and took me in to be processed anyway. If i were white I'm convinced that this doesn't happen

One time I was pulled over in the middle of 90 in Ohio somewhere. I was thrown against the car and frisked. (He asked if I had any dirty needles or knives in my pockets as he did it.) I turned my head and shoulders around after that, and he pulled his a gun on me and asked why I moved. He then put me in the back of a squad car, and kept asking me why I was so nervous. Eventually I said it was because he had a huge booger hanging out of his nose, and I did not know if telling him would make him more angry. He looked in the mirror, and left to blow his nose for close to a minute.

This defused the situation. Then he got called away likely because they found who they were actually looking for.

He wrote me a ridiculously expensive speeding ticket for going 15 over. And I had speed up after he got behind me and started tailgating me without his lights on. I wanted to get in front of him and get over.

The officer was black. Am I to assume he did this to me because he hated white people? Or maybe he was just an asshole.

That is different from the situation i described as I broke no laws.

I actually have a "driving while black" situation as well as a domestic dispute in Wheeling where my ex chick's guy was raising all type of hell yet the officers directed all of their ire towards me.

That may be the case. I have plenty of examples of cops being a dick to me. I think the profession attracts a good amount of bullies, and that should be examined. But I believe people have a lot of common ground, and we should not just assume race or we will never achieve any sort of equality or sanity in our society.

I have two other instances while in grad school also.

My point being that while you suggest that people shouldn't automatically make it about race you also cannot presume that it isn't about race. A person shouldn't only be considered racist once they declare themselves to be racist.

In addition racism involves dickhead behavior so yeah he may be a dickhead to you but that alone doesn't preclude him from being racist also.

Case in point Trump. He is a dickhead to a number of people but he is also a racist.

There are other examples that i can use. Donald Sterling. Dickhead to many people but also racist. Being a dickhead to whites doesn't preclude one from also being racist.

You have instances of people being assholes to you. So does everyone. It doesn't really matter what their motivation is in the end. What matters is how has this held you back? And is there an active conspiracy to hold you back based on race alone?

The career that i chose was primarily done for racial reasons.

In the case of grad school it could have gotten ugly. Real ugly but the professor backed off. In the other instance it potentially could have but i was able to persevere.

The profession that i chose was chosen because it was one that was more likely to hire African Americans. Simple as that.

Considered Law School but i surmised rightly or wrongly that i'd be just another struggling (PD) attorney and thus i rerouted.
