Here's my post from the wrong thread. I'm not even drunk.

I don't like Nirvana, but I was a hipster in the 90s so I had contempt for them while sitting in the back of the classroom telling everyone that Mudhoney is the band that should defines 90s alternative rock.

With that in mind, if you look at whole body of work, I'd have to say Nirvana is one but that's just because they ended before the crap stuff they would inevitably produce. 2. would probably be Pearl Jam 3. SP and 4. GD.

If you look at the band at their peak, 1 would be Pearl Jam, 10, Vs., Vitalogy, No Code is a good peak run and the kids forget that at the time, PJ was huge and people loved Vs. more than In Utero but since then IU gets the suicide bump. 2. Nirvana 3. SP and 4. GD.

Green Day shouldn't be in the conversation, they had a moment with American Idiot but then tried to become pop punk's version of The Who.

Agreed that everything after American Idiot sucks and a few things before sucked too, but the early GD albums are as good or better than anything being made by the other groups being mentioned. Dookie, Kerplunk, 39/Smooth, Nimrod and Insomniac were all great albums, especially the first 3 listed. Dookie was better than anything the other 3 ever produced.

This is a tough one for me to rank since these are all in my wheel house and loved all 4 bands at one point, still love a couple of them.

Green Day is quite simply my all time favorite band. I still remember where I was the first time I heard "longview", I was standing in Loves Yogurt in Highland park and it came on the radio in the store. I immediately ran to the record store in the same strip mall and hummed the song to the guy behind the counter who then figured out it was Green Day. Was an instant diehard fan. Was delighted to find out they had 2 albums before Dookie, both of which were awesome. There may not be a band in history that had more of an affect on me than Green Day.

My list would be....

Green Day (on my personal Mt Rushmore)
Smashing Pumpkin (longevity pushes them past Nirvana)
Nirvana (biggest regret was never seening them live)

Pearl Jam (sucked hard a lot earlier than the rest)

If you're going on longevity, than Pearl Jam should be ranked #1. 4 of the 5 guys have been in the group for almost thirty consecutive years, and Matt Cameron has been their drummer for the past twenty.

To say that 'Dookie' is better than everything that the other three bands ever did is laughable. If you were to put up a poll on Billboard or Rolling Stone or something and ask which was the best album, Nevermind would probably get 50-60% of the vote, Ten would get about 40% of the vote, and the remaining (10% at best) would go to Dookie.

Longevity has to also include quality. Pearl Jam hasn't had a good album since 1996.

There are just certain voices that affect me like a fork across a blackboard...

Billy Corgan
Phil Collins
John Fogerty

Their voices render the music unlistenable.

Incorrect. There have been some clunkers for sure, but Yield, Pearl Jam, and Lightning Bolt are all good albums.

That's quite a disproportionate and unnecessary personal response to something I posted as fact. Very unsportsmanlike.

But I guess if you want to live in denial about Nirvana, that's your problem.

Fecal Matter was the name of Kurt Cobain’s group in 1985. I never really got into those demos, but I like pretty much everything from 1987 onward. My favorite Nirvana era is 88-89 - the Bleach LP, John Peel sessions, etc.

The DJs are only recognizing the truth.

20 years from now, they will still be playing Green Day on the radio, if there still is radio in the form it exists today.

I doubt that will be true of the other bands. I cringe when I hear a song like Jeremy now. Even the end of Black is irritatingly repetitious. "Ten" is passe now.

Two of the best PJ songs no one is talking about is Given to Fly and Wishlist. That is PJ at their Peak in "Yield". They had a kinder, gentler machine gun hand!

Bleach is pretty great. I saw them in 1990 (JORR was there as well) and it sounded just like the album. They played some stuff later released on Incesticide, too.

Green Day is my favorite- Brain Stew/Jaded was the song that unseated Kickstart my Heart as my "ten hours of plowing snow and I'm out of smokes how the hell do I stay awake for another two hours song". I like most everything before American Idiot, but only a couple of songs since then.

I remember seeing Nirvana on SNL and being completely blown away by Teen Spirit. Couldn't get enough, but only for one album.

I like PJ, but was never crazy into them. The Pumpkins were not my thing, but not PTFB either.

For me, it is more Cosmic Psychos, Descendents, and even Weezer than the other three.

YMMV

I was a Nirvana guy in 92-93 but my perceived over the top reaction to Cobsin’s death kinda of soured me on them for a short time. That being said I’m more likely to listen to pre In Utero Nirvana than Pear Jam these days. Was always a big fan of Dookie but these were all 16-20 year old Squirrel music (Notbto be confused with Squirrel Nut Zipper music).

Asking what were the best/worst bands of the 90's is not even remotely close to asking "which of these three albums is the best."

Google that, dickfor.
