I still like Rex, too. As long as he has some protection, he can have a good year. I think Williams can provide that. ANd Tait moving to right tackle is an instant upgrade for the O-line.
I still hope Jerry gets Johnson in the third. That will give the Bear two Qb's fighting for the starting job and one to groom to be the eventual starter.

man, I thought they were going to round 3 because of the shortened time. I really want to see what the bears are going to do.

I think Williams will start at RT next year, then either move halfway through or in 2009. Starting at LT in a division with Kampman and Allen is a tough task, and the opening day matchup is Indy. By all accounts he's an extremely intelligent player who can handle either end. Tait is at least an average LT, which is fine.

This team still needs guard help. That must mean that they have at least some confidence in Beekman.

No way. Williams is your starting Left tackle on day one. Book it. You don't take him at #14 and move him to the less valuable tackle spot. Especially since the right side is Tait's natural position. He's pretty good there too.

WR's are mediocre at this point. You can find mediocre recievers from other teams. THey'll be some cut in training camp.

I want the Bears to take a gurad at #70 tomorrow.

We can find free agents in free agency, but they'd be extremely overpriced. Then you'd be complaining about the price tag.

No.

I agree. No. The talent for O lineman at #44 sucked. A lot of good backs have come from the 2nd round in past NFL drafts. More than good O lineman.

I like what they did.

Forte and Benson will battle in training camp. Forte will win the job. Bears won't cut Benson. Why would they? You need 2 backs. Benson will be motivated now. I think this is the last year of Benson's deal. Maybe he has 2 years.

I'm pleased with what the Bears did.

I think I heard Kiper say Forte runs a 4.4/40. Pretty good.

I'm not sure how anyone can have much problem with what they did today. They brought in much needed help at OT, and at RB. Two glaring holes. Now, let's hope they got some guys who can produce next season as they will be thrown right into the mix.

Forte does run a 4.4

While I hope this is the case, this could change if he struggles in the mini camp in May and/or is a hold out in training camp.

We could though, potentially, improve the line on the edges with this move if Williams can play LT, and allow Tait to move back to the right side.

I think the line is improved whether Williams plays on the left or the right. It's an awfully tall task to ask a kid to come in and start day one from the LT position. I'm not worried about it either way,

The Bears have options at quarterback tommorow, I know Josh Johnson, was mentioned earlier, on the show on the radio, that was one of Marv Levy's sleepers. 4 other guys to look for tommorow
1 John David Booty from USC
2 Erik Ainge from Tennesee
3 Andre Woodson from Kentucky
4 Dennis Dixon from Oregon

Angelo does get some decent players in the later rounds, so Bears should get some good players tommorow, preview for Monday on MJH, Harry on Matt Forte, steal of the draft.

I like Forte - I think I actually talked about him earlier in a post. He's quick (4.46 at the combine), big (6'2" 220). He's not going to fly past defenders but he will run them over or make them miss. I would not be surprised to see him starting Week 1.

Johnson went to the U. of San Diego, where Jim Harbaugh was his coach until he went to Stanford last season. A guy named Caragher was his coach his senior year. Chuck Long coaches San Diego State.

The great thing about Forte is, at his best, he is an every down back. That is most likely not true of anyone else other than Stewart and Mendenhall.

Pick 8- Jax (from Baltimore): Derrick Harvey

There's a surprise. I have rules of thumb. Here's one: when your team gives up 38 points to a shitty Michigan team, no one from the defense deserves to be drafted in the top-10. Jacksonville needs, NEEDS, a WR. They are a WR away from being the best team in the NFL. And yet...

Harvey might be great. Sure, why not. But did they need to move up to 8 to get him? Is he that much better than, say, Merling? Both players are supposed to go off in the teens or early twenties. A trade with a team like the Cardinals or Bears would have been more economical. Let's see what they traded to move up so far.

They signed Jerry Porter

Jerry Porter is not an elite WR. He may help, but that's not what I mean.

The scuttlebutt on ESPN after the forte pick was that the Bears were silly for not taking Brohm with the 44th pick. I'd have taken Brohm, but I see the logic. Forte and Rice were really the only quality RBs left on the board; after that, you're left with a whole bunch of crap. Henne and Brohm may have been a cut above the rest, but then again, maybe not. If they're locked into this Johnson kid, then you're not taking him 2nd round. Andre Woodson is still out there too.

I'm a bit surprised they didn't go with WR in the second. None of these WRs are standouts though, and it seems like guys 6-10 on Kiper's board went before guys 1-5. Kinda weird.

Young was talking as if it were just a fact of reality that Brohm, and only Brohm, will be able to step in and start this season. He argued that the Bears had one of the worst drafts today because they didn't select "a quarterback," but he clearly meant because they didn't select Brohm specifically. I thought it rather presumptuous to insinuate that Brohm, and only Brohm, will necessarily be ready to start in the NFL this year.

Fuck, the guy certainly knows more about being an NFL QB than I ever will, but it seems to me there's really no telling, even for so-called experts.

Benson reportedly isn't recovering from his injury. Bear reporters like Holmes and JD have implied he may be close to done.

Apparently, the problem isn't necessarily the seriousness of the injury. Rather, (as Terry Boers's Bears "sources" claim) it's that Benson hasn't put any effort into his rehabilitation. Maybe the Forte pick will motivate him.

No kidding, what a pud. It is almost as if he retired as soon as he got the big bucks. I guess he figured he took enough punishment getting to the NFL and really didn't care to take anymore.
He certainly lost "da fire and da passion". If he ever had it in the first place.

Earl Bennett from Vandy.
Mike Mayock said that this guy struggled to get off the line of scrimmage against top corner talent.
Maybe that's why the Bears drafted him.

Carolina got a good corner with Godfrey from Iowa. Started at safety, moved to corner his junior year and led the team last year with 5 picks in a soft zone coverage scheme. Runs a 4.4 40 and will be an immediate contributor on special teams.

Bennett looks to be what the bears already have in Booker. He's 'bigger' at 6' 210. Not super fast but has been clocked at 4.48. He was a 3 year starter at Vandy. Here's the NFL Countdown take:

Strengths:
Has good size and a solid frame...Excellent hands..Terrific route runner and knows how to get open...Tough and fearless...Very smooth...Nice vision and can do some damage after the catch...Gives pretty good effort as a blocker...Very smart...Might be able to contribute as a return man...Hard worker...Top intangibles...Productive.

Weaknesses:
Just average athleticism...Not a blazer and could have trouble separating from pro corners...Is not very quick or explosive and lacks a burst..Not much of a vertical or big play threat...He is not overly elusive..Upside at the next level might be limited.

As for a QB, you're not getting your starter for next year or the year after at this point in the draft. You're looking for a project. Wait for round 5 and grab Kevin o'Connell from San Diego State (Coast - this is who I was thinking of earlier with the chuck Long reference)

No, I'd be applauding them for the fact that they realize the Superbowl window is rapidly closing, if not already closed, and they have to win NOW. I'm sick of projects. I want results, NOW. We have the money. Pay the money.

The fact of the matter is that this franchise will never win another Superbowl as long as Angelo and the McCaskeys are involved. Misers of the Midway, baby.
