North, terry, , chet, Mac could all be assholes. Terry and Dan mocked Ron Santos medical problems and also mocked special needs adults that called. b&b were nasty. It was great when da coach humiliated terry with who ya crappin.
Terry has resurrected himself as saint terry. They were all listenable though.

I like Terry, but was never a regular listener.

How often does he just pipe in and say "oh that guy's an asshole irl"

Seems like his goto

Terry rode coattails of far more talented partners his entire career.

Following this, Terry said that Dan has never coasted on his privilege nor intelligence and works hard every day. On the other hand, Matt and Jason both said that Dan was prone to rolling into the studio and coasting, which put additional strain on the producers. So who's not telling the truth?

Well, Terry was coasting as well.

They took pride in their lack of preparation for the show. I think they watched events but they never met an hour before or after with producers to create entertainment.

Seems like the old Score was team efforts all around. Without North protected in the lineup by Jiggetts, his producers, Scoreheads, and HFC transition, he exposed himself as pretty useless.

yeah it was something Hank. When North was on and just doing sports with the Monsters and then the HFC it was a glorious time. Laughs all day long.

I was a Scorehead from mid days until Murph signed off. Mornings were always a problem at the Score except for Murph and Mully and Hanley.

This is a point that shouldn't be lost.

I really do like Parkins but where are the other young talents pushing for air time? I think the last two knocking on the door were Goff and drinky, with their run being close to a decade ago.

I think people forget that if the Score evolved the way Terry envisioned it, we would have a 24 hour Chet type station with the hosts talking at listeners.

Mac and North were the two that created the populist radio of the golden era of the station

Man, I enjoyed the 3 days, although I was not able to hear it all the time. Amongst fav moments: when Maddox Boy called and tried to participate in the nostalgia, and Terry basically gave him the, "do I know you" treatment.

I don't think there is such a thing of young talent pushing and there really probably never was.

The people we used to think of as young up and comers are now mostly gone. They never got the chance or they didn't do enough with their chances. Plus, radio is a scarce place for good jobs now. A prime spot in Chicago radio if they ever open up are likely to be taken by someone in a Parkins scenario rather than some producer or intern.

A smart talented person in Chicago that wants to broadcast goes to a real school (Syracuse not My Favorite Poster and Hero or whatever) then they go anywhere they can in the US to prove they can hold down a show in some manner. Only then will they get a real shot to come back home to Chicago and work in a real slot.

It's pretty well documented that North engineered the entire thing with management being complicit.
You could substitute Mac for North in that statement with regard to the recent changes at The Score.

Mac was not currently employed at the station. He was sought out.

The story is that North and his great agent Be Be (remember those days) went to management unsolicited with his great programming idea. Remember back in those days North was sticking his finger in everybody's pie at the station. He was taking cuts from marketing commissions as he considered himself the originator on some clients. He was getting family members jobs. He was trying to sell his wife as an agent to represent other hosts. he had the juice and definitely took advantage

I'd never axe Mac. I still think the rotation is brilliant.

It's your 'rotation' roster that's dumb ... still is.

The Score's last batch of young talent was the Bernstein Clones like Adam Hog. Diverting a lot of the fill-in and weekend slots to Barry Rozner sorta killed the pipeline.

I think the industry has settled into its brown dwarf star stage and will remain that way until the existing group of listeners go teets up. I don't think they will gain new listeners but I do think there are jobs for 10-20 years.

That seems to be DeCastro's m.o., judging by his work at WGN: grow old with the audience you have and concede the young audience.

Great thread. A handful of thoughts:

1. I don't get Terry Boers. I never listened during the Heavy Fuel Crew days but I have been an on again/off again listener of Boers and
Bernstein from circa 2002 to the end of the show. During that time he seemed to be a non-entity. For someone who talks for a living he
seemed insanely inarticulate and I always thought the show was better when he was on vacation. Also, I saw him at the Printer's Row
Litfest this year, ready, willing, and able to sign books and he wasn't drawing flies.
2. Laurence Holmes deserves a second shot at a prime slot. I know Hamp and Holmes was a disaster but that was mostly Hamp not
Holmes. He's smart and he's got a softer touch with the listeners, although that seems to have been changing in recent years. I always
thought he'd be an excellent pairing with Bernstein.
3. Danny Parkins in an arrogant prick (see "I'm the show's rational thought leader") but he's also a good radio host. I'd rather have a guy
that will take some creative stances and have the brains to back it up than a non-entity like McKnight (unless it's 5:30 in the morning)
or rumbling, stumbling, bumbling Mully and Hanley.

1. Terrible thoughts. Terry was the glue that held together 2 great shows. The last 3 days highlight that. He was funny and engaging.

2. No way. Holmes is fine in his slot. His creepiness kind of works for him there. He had his shot with Hamp and bombed. And he def does not need to be with Bernsie. His asskissing would get old in about 2 days.

3. Parkins is a good host and I agree with Mac that he is the future of the SCORE. I think he is in some ways a nice balance of what is good from Bernsie and what is good from Mac.

He may have been funny and engaging for the past three days, but those adjectives don't describe his performance for the past 16 years. Weren't they paying him something like $500k a year towards the end of his tenure? If the Score is looking to hand out $500k for someone to: sit silently while Bernstein lights up a caller, ramble incoherently when it's his turn to express a thought (see Joe Orr's post from up the thread), or incessantly repeat some stupid inside joke (by cracky), sign me up.

 I was reminded of that during yesterday's Hoiberg interview when Terry asked him about Wendell Carter's ceiling. "Um, yeah Fred, um, some people have said that Carter does some nice things but he might not be all that and yeah he's a safe pick but not everything people say he should be and not going to be the greatest player ever, but he's a good safe pick, but will he be more than that? The kid is yeah, just that, just a kid, am I missing something here?"

I think it was even wordier than that. Hoiberg seemed confused as to what he was asking.

Later Terry alleged no one in the NBA, and specifically the Warriors guards anybody.

Isnt Draymond Green pretty good defensively?

Was this reunion more or less enjoyable than stepping into Dona Lolis' and sinking your teeth into a huitlacoche quesadilla for the first time?

It seems that Boers started mailing it in around the time he stopped regularly writing columns. Could be wrong about that but that is sort of what I remember. I always thought he was the best part of the score but his non sports talking turn seems to have happened around the time he stopped writing columns.

RPB is right about his resorting to characterizations also. He'd resort to that whenever he couldn't provide any real insight into anything. This or that guy is a douche or loon etc.

That should make Parkins happy. No one will be clamoring for more Nick Shepkowski when Parkins returns.
