It has to do with what is called offsets.

While NFL contracts are not guaranteed, certain amounts of money are guaranteed. Teams want the ability to reduce, or "offset", the money it guaranteed by the amount in the contract to a second team should the player get cut during the term of the contract to the first team. The player wants the entirety of the guaranteed money from the first team in addition to the amount of the secondary contract.

I'm 100% supportive of players on this. I don't see how this even became an acceptable industry practice.

It's all academic as he will never be cut. Kevin White is still a Bear and he has been as bad of a player as you could possibly conjure.

Agree 100%. The management angle here is literally let’s try to claw back a few million dollars if we collasially fucked up this draft pick.

His signing bonus is 11 million dollars. If they cut him after year two, fighting over a share of 5.5 million. After year three under 3 million dollars.

I don’t even think there is a salary cap implication here. It’s just money they get back if he signs else where after they cut him. Of all the places to try to squeeze a dollar.

He wouldn't have been a top 10 pick if not for the Bears. That has to be considered.

If the Bears were to overdraft him, they should have confirmed he would sign for less..that is on the Bears of course.

I thought a signing bonus was always guaranteed. Wouldn't a signing bonus be described as "Ïf you sign this contract, you will receive this bonus"?

glennon contract dispelled that line of thinking. bears have no issue bidding against themselves.

i bet at owner's meetings they have nod-wink understanding that offsets are to be policy. george is as soft serve as they come. asks how high when told to jump

Bust. He'll hold out for a couple weeks, report to camp out of shape, blow out both ACLs after tripping on the practice turf, and never be heard from again.

Signing bonus is guaranteed. Here is what they are negotiating against.

He plays for 2 years, is so horrible they cut him outright. The bears only owe him the remaining portion of the signing bonus, in this example 5.5 million dollars.

Some other team signs him to a contract, and somehow the Bears would be refunded the amount of contract he signed with another team.

So if they cut him, and he signs with the packers for 600K a year, somehow the bears receive that 600K and Smith only gets his signing bonus amount, rather than the bears money + the 600K new contract.

Maybe Shea McClellenan could have refunded them some money, but I think that was under an previous CBA. Pay him his fucking money.

The 49ers weren't taking him, nor were the cardinals. So who would have taken Smith, if not for the Bears?

Why do you dislike him? Because he is holding out? Or did you recently attend a wedding in Georgia and some of the guests said he sucks?

Really, if he were so bad that he'd be cut in 2-4 years you would let Pace cut him?

Plus as Dolphin noted, if the bust that is Kevin White is still here, what are the odds of cutting a legitimately good football player? This is Bears foolishness, again.

In all seriousness, I like almost everything I've seen and heard regarding Smith. He seems like a very good pick. It figures that the Bears are apparently fucking this up.

nah. you'd bring in ernie accorsi to cut him and show pace how it's done in the big leagues. he might have forgotten by now!

good! the NFLPA needs to step up against this modern day wage slavery and show the NFL that picking the scabs and letting em run is only apropos when you're making jokes about 80 year old hookers!

i'm sure if you dig deep enough you can find someone on twitter/SOCMED having an opinion that there's racism afoot here. it's gotta be some kind of white privilege that the owners/management are wielding like a scythe to try and screw these players out of some sum/s of their allotted draft slot money! collectively bargained my ass.... it's only a bargain when you're awash in the kind of privilege that allows you to dump contracts that only guarantee a person (of color) is taking years off of their life (let alone its quality) to line your pockets and entertain your masses! you know.... those schmucks who pay $100 for parking for a $100+/ticket preseason game with $100/+ on food and swag to give you enough money to haggle over a couple'a million bucks with your new first round draft pick!

the truest definition of "fantasy football" is actually being able to play til the end of your contract. and should you outperform that contract there's franchise and transition tags available to make sure you don't mess up the continuity of the league by jumping over to another team willing to give you multi-year bonus money when you could leave them high and dry as a free ajent! gotta put the team/league first at every given opportunity! #FootballTeachesLifeLessons

btw, there might be a decent clip of money involved here as there seems to be a downward trajectory of a million/+ dollars every 2-3 picks.

#6 OL Quentin Nelson (Colts) -- $23,888,912
#10 QB Josh Rosen (Arizona) -- $17,597,790
#11 S Minkah Fitzpatrick (Dolphins) -- $16.4mil ($10mil signing bonus)
#13 DT Daron Payne (R*dskins) -- $14,418,360 (first 1st rounder to sign a deal)
#14 DE Marcus Davenport (Saints) -- $13,741,900 / $8mil+ signing bonus
#15 OT Kolton Miller (Raiders) -- $13.5mil / $7.87mil signing bonus
#17 S Derwin James (Super Chargers) -- $12.39mil / $7.1mil signing bonus
#20 C Frank Ragnow (Lions) -- $11.78mil (all guaranteed) / $6.6mil signing bonus
#24 WR DJ Moore (Panthers) -- $11.17mil
#29 DT Taven Bryan (Jaguars) -- $10.2mil
#32 QB Lamar Jackson (Buffalo) -- $9.47mil / $4.97mil signing bonus

so yeah you can see that roquan is in that 6-10 zone where it drops from ~24mil to ~18mil, and there could be a couple'a mil on the signing bonus front.... and by the time you get out of the first round you're starting to squint and see 1/3 of the overall contract value of the top-10 picks, so especially given the nature of football (here today / gone tomorrow) i guess you gotta go out and get yours?

GODSPEED ROQUAN.... DO IT FOR MITCH! DO IT FOR THE <C! DO IT FOR THE SHIELD! STOP BEING SO DAMN GREEDY BECAUSE THE BEARS VAULTED YOU UP INTO A HIGHER WAGE BRACKET!!!! BEAR DOWN!!!!

This only slightly enhances how idiotic the statement is ... he owes the Bears nothing insofar as giving them a 'deal' is concerned ... you're really well into Frank-Cub-Thoughts territory with this one ... I'm sorry to use that type of language but, in this case, it's warranted.
