Are you from
□ Chicago
□ Cook County
□ A collar county
□ Illinois?

Check all that apply. Why would you come to a place like this to root against where we're from?

You forgot a 5th option (The Region), although I spent my first years in Illinois before my parents wised up and moved out of state. They were over a decade ahead of the curve on that one.

My wife is from Lake County, IL and she's even more against Illinois than I am

Well, it's like being a hockey fan: we talk endless shit about the inner workings of the NHL and pretty much hate everyone involved with it, but we don't want Jason Goff to parachute in and tell us what's wrong. We know we have problems and we want things to be better, but how dare you sneer at us from fucking Fayetteville, Arkansas.

I know exactly where you are coming from, but let's just say there are a lot of ex-Illinois residents down here. I think that story is true for most of the mid-south though.

The problem with a transaction tax on financial trades is that unless the entire world does it in unison, business will migrate offshore and leave the US with less revenue and fewer jobs. Kind of like (but the opposite of) states giving companies tax incentives to move.

I spent my day off yesterday making a list of projects I have to complete between now and when I put my house on the market in April. I'm already mentally gone.

Sanjay Reddy has persuasively illustrated the problems underlying the calculation of the International Poverty Line. His work indicates that the IPL should be considerably higher than the current threshold and thus demonstrates that the outlook on global poverty isn't nearly as rosy as The Economist would have its readers believe.

Here's a good analysis by him examining the $1.90/day threshold used by the World Bank.

It's not really booming, though.

It is, GDP is growing at 3-4% right now (remember when we were told 5 years ago 1-2% was the "new normal"), wages are up nearly 3%, and unemployment is ~4%

That is a booming economy. Move out of Illinois and you'll truly see it.

Truth. There is building and jobs all over the Columbus area. I also drove through Sioux Falls this week - holy shit  - that place is exploding.

Exactly. Thanks to Trump's policies, jobs are thriving in states which want workers who want to work for a good wage. That is why the idiots in Illinois have lost so many jobs to Indiana, North and South Dakota, Iowa, and Wisconsin even. Their pro union, easy welfare policies have had a malaise come into their workforce. I guess that it is entirely fitting that the Obama National Museum happens in Illinois. The site of the Bill Ayers, The three Revs, back-drop.

Alexandria seems to have a problem with basic economic concepts with her recent comments. Also maybe she should just SHUT THE FUCK UP about commenting about Israel where the questioner about fell on the floor after asking her to expand her answer and she basically said DO Dah.

If your goal is to find financial stability and start a family, then yes you absolutely should be looking to move there. About 30,000 other people have done so just since the last census.

It really is booming there. I just moved from there to a place that is seeing even higher growth than Sioux Falls even.

Places like Chicago are the exception right now as the rest of the country is enjoying a very healthy economy. Chicago (and Illinois) on the other hand presents us an example of what happens when government mismanagement gets in the way of economic growth.

It's booming in some sectors and for some people, perhaps, but not for everyone. You have your white-collar blinders on.

Edit: However, a booming economy, of course, is a good thing.

The blue collar places are hiring too, and at competitive wages too as they are forced to compete with other businesses for what is a limited labor pool in the market.

The construction contractors cannot find enough workers in the trade.

We've been hearing about these blue collar job openings in flyover states for years going back to 2009. Its not Trump.
