Check all that apply. Why would you come to a place like this to root against where we're from?

Essentially: I got mine, fuck you.

In Illinois/Chicago we're in the "fuck you" stage. So people are moving South to get there's and then when everything goes to shit they'll get to the "fuck you" stage.

There's a double douchebagging in order regarding the fake interview of Ocasio-Cortez by Allie Beth Stuckey. First a douchebagging of pseudo-journalist Stuckey. If you want to be a satirist that's fine, but you know you're going to turn right around and act like a credible voice on politics and perhaps even position yourself as a real journalist.

But those on the Left whining about the fake interview deserve a douchebagging of their own. They love that type of stuff when the target is conservatives/Republicans. Dude, you get your "news" from Trevor Noah and Stephen Colbert. Don't get your panties in a twist because some goofy broad spun it around on you.

But I think it's very well known that the Daily Show and Colbert are comedy. Stuckey doesn't have the profile so it gets passed around as actual news.

At times though it seems to me the left prefer to pick and choose regarding those shows. When they agree strongly they treat it as news and when other things happen they are comedy. The hosts have been interviewed on other talk shows as if they are authorities on news.

We've had this conversation before. There are a lot of people that get their news from those guys or Samantha Bee or John Oliver. I'm not saying that they don't recognize it as comedy. But I do think they see it as news, just news delivered in a hip, funny way. In any case, I don't think the Left has any high ground here. It wasn't conservatives that started this blurry brand of comedy/news.

It's like Bernstein. You can't be the straight man in a T.B. Diddlers commercial and then suddenly get all serious about Penn State child rape and hope to have any credibility. That's why I'm not cheering Stuckey on. She should decide what she wants to be and be that thing.

Yes, the lines are blurred, but the Daily Show and Colbert brands are big enough that everyone knows what they're getting. Never heard of this lady before yesterday, so I don't think its valid for her to assume everyone knows its satire/parody.

What is the fair comparison for Socialism?

Detractors point to the dire situation in Venezuela, supporters point to the successes of Nordic countries

I think it was Dennis that made the most recent post saying that a blended socialist system can work. It would have neither the extreme highs or lows we have today. That can be good and bad realistically.

Probably have to look to Germany for some direction. I think the Nordic countries are too small for comparison. The sheer size of our country and varied aspects of the economy and population would be very hard to manage optimally that way.

To answer RPB's question, they are both good representations. Some socialist systems work and some don't. The Nordic countries are fine examples. They definitely lead to a smaller pie of economic growth output a fairer share of the spoils of a country's success.

Venezuela is an interesting example. A few places/reasons why they have struggled:
-Single commodity dependent (oil) country that is run by a government run company,
-Currency peg to dollar,
-Price controls that cause companies to sell below cost, which leads to shortages.

Even in these situations, a country can still thrive. We see Middle East countries, like Saudi Arabia, that have a pragmatic approach to Aramco pumping oil. They use those proceeds for a vast social welfare program. But the more you try to bend the laws of supply/demand or spend beyond your means, the more likely the system will collapse on itself.

It's interesting reading their current leader's plan to transform their economy and begin weaning citizens away from the social safety net. Seems like the current contract in SA is to accept authoritarian rule in exchange for a guaranteed modest living provided through redudant government jobs or pure handouts.

It will be very interesting to see how SA evolves. They are certainly trying to diversify the economy away from hydrocarbons/chemicals. They are also slowly opening up socially. They have very rapid population growth and recognize the current social contract (which you correctly identified) is not going to work forever.

As you said, it's tough for the left to complain since this is been going on with the Daily Show for almost 20 years now.

Good points, but the closest comparison isn't to the Daily Show tree but rather Vic Berger, who does those Tim-and-Eric-style videos where he recuts footage from debates and stuff to make everything surreal and creepy. I like this one.

Of course that is true. Bill Maher is another example of a so-called comedian who talks about news stories like he knows everything and what he believes is the truth. At least Maher is a smart guy. But Colbert and Kimmel especially were late when they passed out the brain matter.

Bill Maher can eat a bag of dicks. Never liked him.
I've never listened / watched Colbert.
Kimmel....the guy has some good segments and can be entertaining. His political granstanding....no thank you, but I don't want that from any talk show host.

I only watch Maher when he has someone on that can give it back to him and not back down. I do not like him but he does have some smart folks on sometimes that can actually debate issues, not like Colbert and Kimmel. As far as comedy goes, it is sorely lacking. The great comedians are dead or retired for the most part.

Her Daily Show interview was a complete and total disaster.

If I'm a DSA supporter, she is not what I want as my figurehead.

Now that she's reached a point where she has to talk, she doesn't seem too bright. She'd probably be better off shutting up and coasting on her looks and the symbolism of her victory.

It seems like she has a Gary Johnson "Aleppo" incident (he was still the best person on the ballot) every 60 seconds when a camera is on her.

Well, if you still stuck with Gary Johnson through that, I guess she can endure with her base as well.

What did she say that was as objectionable as "what is Aleppo?"

That wasn't too objectionable. He correctly pointed out afterward that you can't fuck a foreign city up if you don't know it exists.

Across the lake in the Michigan gubernatorial primary, Abdul El-Sayed is hoping to recreate Bernie's miracle win from 2016 when his base showed up big but never got polled (Michigan can't poll cell phones), but I don't like the odds, even with Bernie and AOC endorsing him. Some piece of shit propped up by the insurance industry is probably going to win for the Democrats.

That's hardly correct: See, for example, the presidency of George W. Bush.

It was nice to see the socialists get swept in all of their primaries tonight.

I guess Ocasio-Cortez doesn't have quite a pull when she has to open her mouth and expose herself for the novice fool that she is. When you hear her speak, she is almost Palin-esque

Loved seeing her diversity brigade get crushed tonight. Hopefully this sets off a legit civil war in the party.

btw- Anyone voting for Muslims for public office is an actual enemy of the state.

We've been having a war since 2016. Hope you're not on the side of the Hillary Men.

El-Sayed had good things to say but a Muslim was never getting elected outside of Dearborn. It's a shame. Wrong guy at the right time.

As opposed to you, who is definitely not some kind of far-right ideological deviant.

Democrats could not win the special election in Ohio. Seems they are losing some of their momentum.
