I'm sure his agent will totally concede he was drafted too high and give a discount.

No it most certainly does not ... what kind of idiotic statement is that?

The 49ers weren't taking him, nor were the cardinals. So who would have taken Smith, if not for the Bears?

This only slightly enhances how idiotic the statement is ... he owes the Bears nothing insofar as giving them a 'deal' is concerned ... you're really well into Frank-Cub-Thoughts territory with this one ... I'm sorry to use that type of language but, in this case, it's warranted.

It happens all the time in the MLB draft, via the concept of the underslot.

But, and here’s the thing, this is not the MLB draft we are talking about here.

if we are assuming it is the MLB, those contracts are agreed to in principal before the draft so everyone is of a same mindset as an inducement

There is no cap in the nfl draft though so there isn’t a concept of underslotting. The nfl literally has a slot value for the 8th pick. This is about the bears wanting a refund if they cut him.

That's a sad, lonely, scary place.

Many of the picks haven't signed ahead of him yet, and the Bears are one of the first teams to report to camp. If he's not signed by Thursday, I'd be concerned.

We cant worry about other picks, we don't need this guy pulling a hammy week 2 after sittin on his ads for 3 more weeks.. Sign him, you drafted him, you believe in him..get it done.

Imo he's small and I wasn't crazy about the pick..I wanted Nelson(gone) so let's hope this kid is worth it and get him on the field n learn the play book.

They have an extra week because of the hall of fame game. I expect him to sign next weekend.

At this point, he's probably blown any chances to be a starter for week 1.

Nothing makes a fan base sour on a young guy like a rookie holdout.

Something is obviously important to this guy's agent but I am guessing this guy wants to be on the field.

i would say poor play or not being able to stay on the field or both is more improtant. Assuming smith gets in camp soon, all it will take is a few "wow" type plays on defense during pre-season and all will be forgotten

Fucking bears. No better way to make a self fulfilling prophecy than by betting against him playing out all 4 years of his deal. Pay him.

Day 7 of the holdout, not looking good.

Who fucking cares. He will eventually report and play. We have seen this play out. Those of us who follow the NFL are actually smarter than grass clippings.

See Sultan of Syrup, in this case, I do care. Because I am a Bears fan. See how this works?

MLB has a lot of responsibilities to learn

Don't worry, FF. If they didn't fuck this up, they would find MANY other things to fuck up.

So is he holding out for some type of clause that guarantees him his salary for those first 4 years? If that is the case all he has to do is look at Kevin White. It would be hard to be any worse than him and he is still around.

Bears have extra camp this year due to the HOF game.

Thought FF knew that.

Didn't Mitchy holdout through rookie camps and into the start of camp last year?
