Eh....Im trying to think of a worse regular outfielder. He's pretty bad.

Oh he is bad, no doubt. The worst a 40 yr old guy has ever seen?

Name one worse in that period

Dave Kingman?

Lonnie Smith was pretty brutal and let's not forget Adam Dunn.

The weird thing is he's not a big guy, especially now. He's not a big lug plodding around out there. He's just naturally bad at outfielding. Can't judge balls or take proper angles.

I don't really think Canseco belongs with the other three. He got bad later in his career and he's remembered for the homer bouncing off his head, but early in his career he was a decent outfielder.

Fine, fine ... sub in Rob Deer then.

Was Gorman Thomas terrible or just not good?

When Kyle puts up .288 48 115 .613 slugging and a .956 OPS, then we can make that comparison.

It’s kind of funny how people think Kingman was a pos player because of the media.

Offense was not part of the original post, just defense.

Yeah, that lousy TV that showed him to be an oaf in the outfield.

Exactly, horrible reads on balls..awful angles..Dunn looked like a ballerina compared to Schwarber.

His problem is he’s trying to hard. Here’s the job of a left fielder:

1. Hit
2. Catch routine flyballs
3. Don’t turn singles into doubles and don’t turn doubles into triples

It’s not that fucking hard. Stop trying to be a hero.

Gold Glove?

But honestly, his defensive improvement-- on a surgically repaired knee-- is just a tick short of a miracle. Guy must have busted his tail in the offseason. Good for him.

I dont know what you're laughing at. The stats support him being a top outfielder.

I'm laughing because you know as well as I do that he is not going to win a Gold Glove this year.

They eye test on some of his routes though. I’m pleasantly surprised by how much better he has gotten though. You aren’t the first to mention it, I think there was an Athletic article about his defense in not so distant past. A lot of credit went to the arm. He certainly put the work in though. Good for him indeed.

Which tells you more about the stats than it does about him.

Hitting .195 since the break btw.

I don't like players competing in the HR derby. Doesn't help; could hurt. Seems to mess up their swing.

No, it really doesn't. It tells you about his defense and how good he's been this year.

He's good in all stats old and new.

12 games since the break. Maybe pump the brakes on the panic.

sure it does

and you know neither old nor new have been considered overly satisfying

Yeah his average ( which doesn’t mean anything right Len? ) has been slowly dipping. That said, he is the one Cub above all others whose at bats I will stop whatever I’m doing to watch.

They would probably be best served to do the Carlos Lee maneuver of telling him to put his heels on the warning track and catch the balls that don't require him to leave his feet

Remember when that ball bounced off Jose's head and into the stands for a home run? I also seem to recall that he wore a batting helmet on his head when he played the outfield.

I still remember that classic Tommy Lasorda rant about Kingman's "performance" (game where he hit 3 home runs against Tommy's Dodgers.
