Went to a ten year high school reunion. Had to sit with a few Notre Dame grads who talked about how great Notre Dame football was as if they were on the damned team. I called them on their bullshit and changed tables. Have hated Notre Dame ever since.

Mike, you're from Chicago. When you grew up, name a Chicago college football team? The only potential answer is Northwestern, and they were an absolute door mat our entire lives. In high school, most kids either rooted for Michigan or Notre Dame. And for Notre Dame fans like me, it was passed down through my family.

Plus, you have the whole Catholic, southside Irish thing for that area. I was a huge ND fan in HS until I got older and realized some things.

Any major badass with a heart surely will tell you my friend
Any minor Notre Dame football team fails together again
When Fighting Irish at your door
In the morning they won't be there no more
Any major badass tells you

Agreed. God knows what the White Sox will do with a guy who actually gets on base.

2002 saints season. going into the bye 6-2, but cousin vick got in brooks' head and he just wasn't the same. team went 3-5 after that, and couldn't muster one single touchdown *at home* against the lowly panthers losing 10-6. who won the superbowl that year? the bucs? who beat them? twice? the saints.

the 1993 wildcard game against the eagles is another one.

Hebert would have got the job done.

I'm going to catch hell for this, but I just thought of May 1983 when the f-ing IHSA disqualified our 7'2" high jumper (state's best) from the state meet for playing in the McDonald's All American bball game. We finished 4th in state but would have won if he'd been allowed to compete and hit an average (for him) mark.

But at least we had crazy fun.

Hawk's ten year reunion had to be in 1956.

I’m sure those ND guys were really bummed when “ the hawk” moved to that different table.

When RG3 came down with linguini leg in the playoffs. They had scored two easy TDS again Seattle. Next round would have been at a very beatable Atlanta. Who know how it would have shaken out after that.

That reminds me of one: the decision to go to four class IHSA basketball so that farm boys could win more regionals. Destroyed the whole fucking event, and now I just hate-follow it until there is a year where Chicago schools win all four classes in both boys and girls.

I had a lot of Cubs hangups I couldn't get past but after they won the World Series those disappeared for me.

I guess the only hangup sports wise I have is the 80s Bears teams not making it back to another SB after 85. They had one game pretty much won I remember vs the Redskins and Lew Barnes fumbled a punt away late giving the games to the Redskins.

I was thinking about this again tonight for some reason, but what are some of the sports events that you feel someone was just plain wronged -- they were penalized for some reason, and even after appeals, were denied that they were in the right.

For me, I was just thinking of Gregg Popovich in 2012... it is a road trip and he wants to give his starters rest, so Duncan, Parker, Ginoblii, and Danny Green get the night off. Now, from what I know about coaching in the NBA (which is not that much), you can start or rest whoever you want and make substitutions however you want, subject to the rules of the game. That's kind of what defines a coach as far as game play goes. Well, apparently I am wrong, because Stern hits the Spurs with a $250,000 fine for a "disservice to the league and the fans." Such fucking bullshit. Stern is not a coach, Stern did not set up any rules with the league regarding resting players before hand... he was just pissed that this happened to be a national game and the stars were not playing. It is not a commissioner's call to say how a team should be managed.

I am so pissed about this to this day that my face turns red everytime I think about it. It is someone in power, abusing their privledge, and there's no accountability for it. Kangaroo court in action in the NBA. I think I get more upset that other people aren't upset about it. The only semi-persuasive argument I have heard against my opinion is that fans that bought tickets were expecting to see Duncan, Parker, etc. but they don't play if they get injured, so if you are buying the tickets 3 or 4 months ahead, that argument holds no water. Maybe I would buy it from people buying the day before, but I don't think 2012 Miami Heat/San Antonio Spurs tickets were just hanging around.

Arggg I should not have posted this because now I am angry and I need to calm down before bed.

Well, I think the fine was excessive, especially without clarifying the expectations, but this is something the league needs to make "coach-proof". There's no reason to rest all of those guys at once. It's a slap in the face of the fans. I understand that in a guy like Popp's world, winning is everything and that's the way it should be if we want to have the kind of integrity in our games that make them meaningful, but there's a bigger picture there too. These games are entertainment. And if you lose sight of that in pursuit of wins, soon enough you won't have a game at all.

I was having this discussion about baseball the other day. Advanced analytics have really made the game less entertaining. The idea that a pitcher's job is to "miss bats" has created the five inning starter. That's why I don't feel sorry when some lesser pitcher blows the K king's game in the eighth or ninth. If he had learned how to pitch instead of just trying to blow everyone away, he might be around to finish his own game. But the analytics are at work on the hitter's side too. Every guy going up to take, take, take pitches. It may be a winning strategy, but it sure as hell ain't entertaining. If I want to see people walk I'll go to Lincolnwood Town Center at 9:00 in the morning.

It's juuuussst starting to swing back the other way with the emergence of dominant bullpens. No reason to rush the marginal starter off the mound to get to the 3 headed monster of guys throwing 98 plus.

Absolutely. And that last week of 04 Dusty completely fucked everything up. Every move he made was wrong. (which is why Stone got fired for correctly pointing it out)

The 2004 team had a real good shot if they made the post season. Prior was rounding into dominant form again (last two starts 17 ip, 0er, 23ks...or something like that)
