Hope Smith enjoys playing football half as much as he enjoys being a little activist. We should have drafted Edmounds.

Did we get the contract details on the hold out specifics yet?

How can you go wrong with two of your four starting LB being the size of safeties.

I do enjoy bob saying smith was a reach and then he immediately advocates drafting a player that literally was drafted at 16.

He definitely was not a reach. The Raiders were set to take him at 10 and immediately traded out of the position when the Bears took him.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, the two sides agreed to a specific formula that gives Smith protection against most of the potential incidents that would arise while he is in uniform and on a football field. As to anything that could happen during a play (for example, lowering the helmet, unnecessary roughness, illegal hit on a defenseless receiver, roughing the quarterback), Smith’s guarantees void only if the league office imposes a suspension of three games or more.

Smith can be suspended one or two games for a violation of the rules that apply during a given play with no consequence to his future guarantees. He can be suspended one or two games multiple times with no consequence to his future guarantees. Smith loses the guarantees only if a suspension of three or more games is imposed on him. (Over the last decade, that’s happened to only one player: Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict.)

As to a potential suspension arising from something happening after a play, Smith’s guaranteed money will not void if he’s suspended for one game for an incident that occurs while defending himself or a teammate. While it’s possible that a disagreement could emerge — and an arbitration may be needed — as to whether Smith was or wasn’t the aggressor in a given situation, the Bears yielded on their prior position that they should have discretion to decide whether to void guarantees based on a post-play incident. Instead, Smith’s guarantees will void only if he’s suspended two games for a post-play infraction, or if he’s deemed to be the aggressor as to an incident resulting in a one-game suspension.

Good for him. Now don't suck on the field.

I hope the guy works out and can put this shit behind him but I also think this will leave a bad taste in his mouth. I do not like the way Pace handled this entire thing.

It seems as if the Bears won this one.

Also based on that it doesn't seem like off the field behavior was the issue. More like after the whistle behavior.

Tremaine Edmunds had a top 5 overall draft grade with comps to Brian Urlacher. Looks like much of the league got it wrong.

Basically, he can't be Vontaze Burfict. Wow. What confidence this little activist has in himself. Just buckle up for the ride with this clown.

talking about first round busts, I think it would be very appropriate for the bears to see if the can get dante fowler for a something like a seventh round pick. He is suspended for game 1 by the league. He got into a fight with the guy who beat him out for a starting job that has caused a team suspension. He has mysterious shoulder pain.

He also was the #3 pick who had 8 sacks last year and is in a contract year.

They need to do something to get some talent in to rush the passer. It is frighteningly bare.

Pace should grow a dick and trade for Khalil Mack.

Yes, Charles Martin but man Charles Rogers had all the tools. He made an insane catch against ND one year.

Would you give up what we gave for Cutler for Mack?

No chance. Green Bay might though.

I dont think any one outside of a youngish top 5 QB is worth 2 first round picks, right?

Is this the standard that applies to all NFL players or does this just pertain to Smith?

It sounds like this was an exception for the Bears.

You'll have to also give him $20M a year. The Raiders will definitely want more than that.

The Bears are only paying their starting QB 6 million a year. Now is the perfect time to make this move. This is the window. If Mitch pans out they will have to extend him at probably 25-30 million and then you can forget about a big ticket item like this.

FYI such a trade deeply imperils the offensive line. How much longer does Massie and Leno have? Long might already be done. They have no 2nd next year, they gave that up for Miller (good trade though). Trading for and paying Mack will take up whats left of their cap flexibility the next few years.

That said correcting the pass rush issue would cost a 1st anyways, and really it's something that needs to be done. Floyd and Lynch aren't enough. Mack moves the needle big time on their defense, they don't have a real star on that side of the ball. Lots of good players but no true star. Adding Mack as a matchup nightmare makes everyone's lives easier

They should at least consider this. Id be shocked if they were, but it's a move that could really push them over the top. You think about that defense + if (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky works out....could win the division over Minnesota.

Exactly.

The Bears are in a really interesting position where they could have a good QB locked up cheap for 3 years. Mack represents an opportunity to turn them into an all around monster of a team. I think they are going to score a lot. I love their position players on offense and I love the coach. Give them a top 5-10 defense and now you're cooking

If (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky is good then 3 years from now they're going to have to adopt the "expensive QB model" just by necessity. Might as well enjoy this time where they can afford whatever they want as much as they can.
