How to trivialize your own decision not to play starters in the dress rehearsal pre-season game against KC and hedge against loss against GB.

"I feel strong that when we go into Week 1 that those 25-30 plays aren't going to sway [the Green Bay game] one way or the other. It's really not."

"If we win that game against Green Bay, trust me, it wasn't because we didn't play those 25. If we lose it, same thing, I promise you that."

"So for somebody to tell me that 25 to 30 [preseason] reps is going to make him ((Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky) a better player Week 1, Week 2, Week 3," Nagy said, "it's not going to happen."

Maybe he is head coaching material after all!

What he did was an exercise in doublespeak/doublethink.

Obviously, he thinks the Bears will be in better shape come week 1 by not having played starters, which is why he made the decision he did, but at the same time, he says whatever that amounts to is inconsequential to victory or loss, which cannot also be true. Hence, the contradiction.

He's like one step away from football nihilism, the realization that nothing he does will make the Bears better. As some reports have suggested, Nagy is indeed a football prodigy. It usually takes our coaches four or five years to come to this conclusion.

His main argument is that compared to the 2,000 snaps the Bears have taken in practice in camp the 25-30 snaps for starters against KC would have been just drops in the bucket. That's not so much nihilism as pragmatism in avoiding injury. But it's hard to justify when you're taking that approach as the head coach and your business is to prepare the players. Nagy is saying they've prepared enough with less than optimal preparation against live opponents, when many observers would disagree, especially regarding (Pro Bowl QB) Trubisky.

While Nagy doesn't get the benefit of the doubt so early into his tenure, he deserves credit for his Jedi mind trick attempt.

NP. If you had said fatalism, I would have been more inclined to agree. It does make him something of a savant.

I think he realizes that their ceiling this year is 7-9, and so if not playing the preseason games maybe makes them suck more at first and end up 5-11 but keeps everybody healthy, so the fuck what?

He will be on the hot seat after his 2-14 season. Next seasons 4-12 won’t be enough to save him. Everyone gets launched and they bring in a defense minded coach again. Rinse. Wash. Repeat. NFC browns.

Former Lovie Smith defensive backs coach Steve Wilks recreating the takeaway-first philosophy of those Bears teams. Cards forced 8 turnovers last night vs the Cowboys. Have about 16 over 3 preseason games.

Completely agree.
Vegas says 6.5 wins
I say 6 wins....if the stars align, 7.
