I like it. One solid season with good characters and a twist.

I don't think it is particularly effective filmmaking to show the climax of your story in snippets and to have a key component during the credits. This ain't a superhero flick.

Anyway, what the fuck. I cannot even really accurately describe what I'm seeing in the closing credits snippet. Amma is attacking someone. So are other people. They appear to be in lab coats and it seems like they are drowning the victim.

Would someone like to dumb that one down for me?

Watching the interview after the show with the director or creator, I think it's supposed to show Amma doing the killings.

EDIT: Yes here's a breakdown.

Thanks but I did say I know Amma attacked the girls. However, it looks like she has accomplices and it almost looks like one of the people in the snippet who is being attacked is her new friend in St. Louis.

I think it is poor storytelling to just give the viewer a feel for the most important part of the story rather than the full story.

I think what is frosting me some on this is that they spend 50 minutes of this episode finishing the story in a perfunctory manner. Then it got sped up to the point that they could not really cover any key parts to the story.

Adora plead not guilty. OK, to what? There is at least three separate murder trials on the table and two attempteds. If there were trials there would be so much of this hashed out that they couldn't do their cute little ending. Also, Adora probably beats the rap on killing the two girls. All they have are pliers, which certainly were not the murder weapon. There is no motive, witnesses the timeline doesn't match up, etc. Also, the father is probably going down for the child neglect and certainly Amma would have been grilled by police. There is a lot of meat left on the bone in this story all so that we can just get to a post credits turn.

The writer said she didn't write a horror story or murder mystery but no one told the producers of the show.

Putting a post credits scene on a mini series is unforgivable.

I don't think so. You knew what had happened as soon as Amma said don't tell mama. The extra footage just confirmed it in case you were shell shocked from the final scene. Plus it gave a nice pause in between the final scene and the post script. I agree with GD in that it was hard to see exactly what happened. I re-watched it several times. But the entire show was shot in a way that it was easy to miss certain visuals and dialogue.

I completely missed it. Who keeps watching after the credits roll? Don't care enough to go back and watch it.

It wasn't important. It just showed Amma (and roller friends) killing the 2 girls in Windgap and the new friend in St. Louis.

Additionally, I am disappointed the hunting cabin had absolutely no relevance to the story yet was featured prominently throughout the early half of the show. There was even the creepy pantheistic carving next to it just to tickle our asses with a feather. Nope. Cabin means nothing. It isn't even relevant to Camille's sexual assault. This seems to be becoming a pattern in these tv shows. They aren't exactly red herrings. They are just unanswered, but purposeful props.

Isn't there some theory of writing/film making that if you reference something specifically it better have a purpose in the story?

Anyone who thinks this show is even with or passes true detective season 1 is smoking crack.

Good show but not great

Definitely had a True Detective season 1 feel.

Many of the plot points really weren't important and added nothing.

Macro level reviews as well:

obviously it was written by a woman with no man having any depth and either stupid or evil

The author has no respect for small town living.

The show wasn't perfect but there was a lot to like. Most of the characters provoked a strong reaction- you either hated them or felt sorry for them. It wrapped up pretty neatly with a nice surprise. It was creepy in many ways and had a lot of good visuals. Sure, they could have spent several seasons digging in deeper, but I felt it they tied it altogether nicely.

I was happy with it being one season. Just tie your shit together and pay off the themes and locations you reference.

by the way, Amma seemed to age about 5 years after moving to St. Louis. Maybe they were trying to make a statement about that place

well, the actress is almost 20 IRL, so........
I'm also thinkthing they might've done a lot of the filming in reverse chronological order....I read that Amy Adams did a shit load of binging on non-alcoholic beer and shit food to get that 'puffy alcoholic look" that is more obvious toward the end than the beginning.
I don't think she would wrap filming Sharp Objects looking like that, so she probably trained her way into it and lost the weight along the way. Anyone else notice how she just kinda quit smoking somewhere around the middle of this show? Just another thing that was never explained. I have my problems with the show, a lot of which you guys have already pointed out. I guess I just forgot about Mae (I did not, however forget about Dre though ).

I liked it, Gone Girl wasn't a masterpiece either, and the Flynn novel with the straight to video movie starring Charlize Theron absolutely sucked. But at the end of the day, it was better than The Big Bang Theory or November NBA games or whatever.....

entirely appropriate that a day drinking, delusional cheerleader would be nicknamed "Cubbie"

I have a feeling you already know this, but wanted to make the joke anyway but I think the nickname refers to her being a 'cub reporter'.
Either way, that was funny, and the editor constantly calling her that got on my nerves. In fact, his whole character did. Does he have cancer? Why is he always sick? He shows up out of nowhere from St Louis at the end to save the day and cover up half naked Camille while the guy who literally fucked her is repulsed by her body now that he can see the scars? It was a bit much....

I think they left it open enough just in case.

No way they get Adams back for another romp but maybe they could coax a look alike like Pam from The Office

finally got around to watching/finishing this thanks to amazon prime's hbo subscription trial. going to try to check out "herve" before it ends too. and the robin williams doc.

there was a lot of this show i liked, probably the best stuff coming from "calhoun day". completely made up for the show, i think the juxtapositions and metaphors and goings-on throughout the day were extremely well done.

but they really fucked the ending up. you spend all this time building and building, and (even worse than the book did) handled it so poorly it nearly completely ruined the entire show.

the reveal at the very end was surely "shocking" to those who didn't know it (or saw it coming) but there is *so* much more to know about why it was that way. also, the "little helpers" in that lousy cut-scene made no sense and opened a whole other can of worms.

i liked that they stretched out richard's character more, and gave him more of a purpose than in the book. and i loved patricia clarkson's performance as adora.

to good dolphin's criticism of "southern gothic", that was on purpose. flynn comes from the rural midwest, and she's illustrating the mangled, twisted hillbilly reality that tries to tuck itself into deceptively being showy. as beautiful as adora's house is, it's ugly too. and so is the town. it's broken down and gross. but within that they try to make it look like they're just like anybody else. everything is a "secret" but it's in plain sight. it's hypocritical but subtle. the people still try to be "old money" even though they drink bad bloody mary's and miller lite.

those were some of my favorite elements of "sharp objects". i just really thought the end was cheaply done, and it's a shame. it could have had a huge punch.
