It is if you just give them away to charity. Not so much when you get a 27-year-old proven defensive stud.

13-15th-ish 2019 first round pick for a 27-year-old Mack now = Big Bears Win

2020 mid-teen 1st and a 3rd for 2020 2nd round pick = moderate Bears loss

Day 3 move up for the Bears to get a better ST player = Bears

Money to pay Mack. Nice to have a guy good enough to warrant that contract.

A+ to Pace.

Do the Bears make the playoffs this year? Next year?

I say no, no...that's a very long time for Pace and a putrid record

The Bears will definitely make the playoffs in the next 2 years. Will 2 mid to late first round picks be better than Mack?

So you say the Bears are in the playoffs next year? Aaron Donald went 14th..mid firsts have a lot of value.

So your preference is to have multiple mid round lottery tickets and hope both become Aaron Donald instead of getting a proven stud that looks like a surefire HoFer? Would you have give up 2 mid first round picks for Urlacher or Ray Lewis?

I like the trade, Pace can't draft for shit anyway.. I just don't see Mitch as being good. I don't see this team ..even with a great D making the playoffs this year or next.

I’ll have to read about the trade to see what the Bears gave up to draft him but.. Pace has done a mediocre to bad job of drafting since he’s been here. So, I don’t see him drafting better than an already established player like Mack.

But still, Pace has done a shit job overall of rebuilding this team. He was brought in here because he was supposed to be this draft guru of sorts, this is pretty much an admission that he isn’t. Dude should get fired soon for doing an overall crappy job imo.

Pretty good objective look at the trade

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/2454 ... nd-raiders

And to be fair,

Bill Barnwell
@billbarnwell
I wrote before the second-rounder was revealed. It definitely makes the pot sweeter for the Bears, but the idea is still that the Bears are paying Mack something like $35 million per year after you account for the value of the picks. Which isn’t necessarily wrong, just a lot.

Insightful analysis as usual. But you don’t mention the 2nd rd pick the Bears are getting back in 2020. Does that affect your analysys at all?

I had to stop taking it seriously when he said he would have to be DPOY 4 years in a row to have value for his contract. Sounds like a baseball theory that makes no sense.

Obviously giving up all those draft picks is awful.

That’s your loss. It’s sound analysis and Barnwell is a respected NFL writer.

It’s badically unprecedented to give up this amount of draft capital AND hand out a contract like that for a non-QB. Make no mistake, if Mack is anything less than a top 3 DPOY contender for years this was a mistake. Pro bowl level isn’t enough.

Pace is very good at making moves that distract from his draft and free agent history.

With one of thier players making roughly $2 billion this season, Packers fans cannot say anything about a contract ever again.

But, they are scared. So I get it.

That's just dumb. You are basically saying all big contracts are a mistake.

Bill Barnwell isn't a packer fan.

Also, Rodgers is significantly more valuable than Mack.

To be valuable he needs to win 4 straight DPOY. That's a crazy statement.

It really wasn't objective though. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a player who has won 4 straight DPOY awards. It's pretty clear he was going to hate the deal from the start.

Dr. Ken had a much more objective look at it. The Bears didn't give up much in the way of draft picks(Mack replaces one draft pick, and the other was a 3 and 1 for a 2, which will probably be a high 2).

So that breaks it down to expensive players are bad unless they are playing as one of the greatest players of all time. The same logic would say that the Packers are unlikely to have Aaron Rodgers be valuable with his new deal.

The flaw in the barnell logic is the bears are paying Kevin white 23 million this year in lost value for being a shitty first round pick

Give me Mack at his theoretical 38 million value compared to some shitty first round picks we have had in the last 10 years.
