Stop regurgitating this phrase over and over again. This is the NFL. There is a salary cap. The Steelers are actually in a pretty tough spot cap wise. It's not as black and white as this. Come back with a nuanced thought please.

Thanks!

They aren't the Raiders and they have the flexibility to pay him. This is the 2nd year in a row. Their plan is to run him into the ground and then discard him while paying him the minimum they can.

No shit. At least you're slowly learning more about football. Progress is good.

Of course it is. Then they draft the next Bell. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I know how the cap works and have consistently shown a better understanding of the league than you have. Nas already corrected you on this as well.

I understand their position. That's why I'm fine with him holding out. Get paid while you have value. They recently created an additional $5M in cap space so something tells me they will get something done soon. He loses leverage if they play well without him though.

He told teammates he'd be back yesterday and went back on his word. Even they are pissed now.

I think he may wind up getting dealt. He not even get a new deal but he could get a guarantee that his usage would be kept to 10-15 touches in regular season games. Teams are simply not lining up to pay a running back.

Pretty sure he didn't. I believe he specifically told them IDEK (i dont even know) and that was quoted by a couple of them yesterday.

I think they assumed.

FavreFan...This is what I was looking for in terms of more "nuanced" discussion. Yes they can pay the guy, the question is what is the best strategy moving forward. Do better than "Pay the guy" in every thread. Thanks.

I wonder how big the cross section is of people who believe these things.
"When you make millions you shouldn't be complaining about not making enough".
"Not all full time jobs should pay you enough to feed, clothe, and shelter yourself".

I believe paying him is out the window at this point. Once they franchise tag him they can't extend him to a multiyear deal. It seems trading his rights over summer is the only play there. Unless you can't trade a franchised player.

I'm pretty sure they can until he signs the tag.

Le’Veon Bell’s agent has spoken with enough teams, I’m sure, to know what Bell’s worth would be on the open market in ‘19.

Rising cap + lots of AFC teams with money (Jets, Colts, Texans) plus all three AFC North teams would be in the mix.

They believe they can make up $10M.

Baltimore in particular, in a post-Flacco world, would be intriguing with Lamar Jackson and Bell.

But for him to get a new deal, he needs to be healthy. So I’d say there’s a good chance Bell doesn’t report until week 11, as it’s the financially prudent thing to do.

My guess is he’ll get at least $40M guaranteed on a new deal on the open market, and close to $50M in cash over the first three years.

Teams are going to be more willing if he doesn't have 400 carries this year too. The Steelers would run him into the ground knowing he is leaving.

Bell, has Matt Forte Syndrome. Just because you have 70-80 catches a year doesn't mean you get elite WR money. RB catches, 50% of the time are meaningless dump off plays.

Someone who makes $30,000 thinks someone who makes $75,000 doesn't have anything to complain about and that person thinks someone who makes $150,000 should be thrilled to make that much more, etc. The players, regardless of league, are simply getting paid what the market will bear at this time.

I get it.

I understand that in the very narrow context of professional sports a person can make $12 million dollars a year, say they are underpaid, and have a legitimate point even though it sounds ludicrous to a "regular" person. I never cared how much players made. If 70,000 people paid to watch in person and a TV station paid billions for the rights to televise you do your job you'd make that much, too.

Again, I get it.

But as I've gotten older and crabbier and the numbers involved have gotten harder and harder for me to wrap my head around I find it increasingly difficult to side with a guy holding out for more money -- even if he has a legitimate point in the very narrow context of the NFL -- who has already made $30 million dollars before the age of 27. If owners "held out" or complained as frequently or as publicly about money as much as the players I would feel the same way about them, but that rarely happens. Football is my favorite sport and the only one I still follow relatively closely, and while I never thought it would when I was younger things like this do diminish my interest to a degree.

Every time a player holds out there is an owner on the other side fighting to keep that money. Literally it's the exact same number.

Good call by Football Perspective already crowning Jackson but not recognizing the emergence of Collins as a RB
