I don’t care much about the rules of tennis that Serena Williams was accused of violating at Saturday night’s U.S. Open final. Those rules were written for a game and for players who were not supposed to look or express themselves or play the game as beautifully and passionately as either Serena Williams or the young woman who eventually beat her, 20-year-old Naomi Osaka, do. They are rules written for a sport that, until Williams and her sister came along, was dominated by white players, a sport in which white men have violated those rules in frequently spectacular fashion and rarely faced the kind of repercussions that Williams — and Osaka — did on Saturday night.

She's pushing a phony narrative. White men have often forfeited points and games with their behavior. Traister is a Northwestern graduate. Is she incapable of doing research? Of course not. She just doesn't care. She wants to make a point and she's going to make up "facts" to support her viewpoint.

It's just like the crap I read on social media a couple weeks ago when Serena wore a clown outfit on the court and was rightfully admonished. These shitlibs were trying to compare Serena's catsuit to the one worn by Anne White in the 80s, suggesting that Anne White faced no repercussions because she was white. In fact, Anne White was ridiculed and sanctioned at Wimbledon for that stupid stunt.

This all just a cult of self when it comes down to it. Serena Williams obviously thinks she's bigger than the game. But why wouldn't she? She's constantly being told that she is by idiots like Rebecca Traister.

well none of these people would be writing about tennis unless there was some ((((discrimination)))) that they felt they had to rev the waambulence engines on.

it's just funny to me that they're trying to make it so much about white men privilege when there wasn't a white man involved in any way.

Well when you say in the very first sentence of your article that you don’t care much about about what rules she violated it’s pretty clear you’re more concerned about pushing your agenda than the actual facts

It’s killing them that they can’t push racism on this so they’re going with sexism.

I've always been a fan of Serena Williams, but she acted like an asshole. And she has in the past. But that's not what's disturbing in this story. Professional athletes often act like assholes. They're competitive and they don't like to lose. Fine. It's the way the media and the Tennis Establishment have reacted in coddling her for acting like an asshole that's the real problem. And the desperation to make this about white male privilege when there wasn't a white man anywhere near the game. I'm waiting for one of these clowns to blame Donald Trump.

here's the other hilarious thing: all the arm-flailing over this "injustice" just takes more away from osaka's historic victory. another "person of color" is being robbed of her moment of glory, just because everybody wanted serena to win.

All that was missing was Ray Liotta storming the court ,putting Ramos in chokehold and screaming “Serena can do whatever the fuck she wants on the court !! “ at him.

Serena has a history of going off the rails when she is losing a big match. But she is also correct to insist that there is sexism in the officiating. (In general there is little consistency in when rules are enforced.) There is also inconsistency in her defense, however, in that her coach admitted to sending her a signal while she claimed that her team does not have signals.

They showed a shot of her directly looking at her coach as he was signaling her. THis before the official confronted her. So she is absolutely lying about not cheating. As for the sexist accusation, this is also bullshit. I recall Jimmy Mac having to forfeit a championship match during on of his explosive moments as a spoiled asshole..

Serena also told an official a couple of years ago that she would shove a ball down her throat because of a bad call in her opinion. The bitch is just a bully who throws her considerable weight around when she is losing and it isn't a pretty picture.

There's a clear dichotomy in reporting here, where international outlets have people who know tennis explaining why Serena fucked up while American outlets are just professional liberals yaas-queening all over themselves.

It's great there's a thread for both people who know and follow tennis as well as those that weirdly want to make political statements about a sport they couldn't care less about.

I watched a good portion of this match and came away with these thoughts on the situation:

1. Osaka was going to win either way. She was dominating Serena and Serena knew it. The frustration on Serena was obvious before any of this mess started.

2. Coach said he was coaching. Should the penalty have been called given that it is never called? No, but it doesn't mean it didn't happen. And frankly, all Serena had to do was ignore the warning anyways and continue, but she latched onto that (probably due to her frustration with the match to that point) and wouldn't let go.

3. Serena took a different approach to yelling at the umpire than most tennis players do. Usually, they just tell him how much he sucks at his job and that he's blind or something like that. Serena, on the other hand, attacked the umpires integrity and continually implied that he was prejudice against her because she is a woman. She even brought her child into it, as if that plays a role in this somehow. As this board knows, people don't like it when they get called out like that - and tend to lash out. The umpire took that several different times before he eventually hit her with the game penalty. He probably thought he was doing her a favor since she was getting throttled so badly by Osaka. Put her out of her misery.

4. I think the most sexist thing that occurred during this entire situation has been the reporting of the incident. The media has been willing to excuse Serena because she is a black woman who just had a child. While men's tennis players may say much worse things before they get a warning or penalty, they are quickly scolded by the media as being petulant brats who have "exploded".

5. I hope Osaka wins more titles, especially another at the US Open, then tells the fans to go fuck themselves. What a bunch of dicks.

Isn't this the way it always goes with Serena losing her shit? If she gets punched in the mouth early on, it's all over and it's just a matter of how she'll sabotage herself so that she didn't really lose.

And I know it's trite, but if a man 1) got caught cheating and denied it, 2) nuked his racquet, and 3) told the black woman umpiring the match that she stole the outcome from him and he would speak to her manager to get her fired, it would be absolutely horrifying.

I wonder if leash's turn towards Trump can also be blamed on having a toddler at home.

I doubt it, but it's probably at least partly responsible for the erosion of his backhand.

She was getting her ass kicked in the match and probably felt "entitled" to get another championship. Her conduct was clueless and classless. When she accused this official of being sexist, was amazing. Was this not a WOMEN'S tennis match. It isn't like she had Nadal or Novak as an opponent for cripes sake. People defending her are defending her because of her race in my opinion.

The chair umpire should’ve told her the real sexism gong on is making you win only 2 sets out of 3 instead of the 3 out of 5 that the male tennis players have to win.
