Also, what is the downside to introducing yourselves with a nice gift?

my wife is a "lets meet the new neighbors" type of a person. I'm not. at our old house, we had 2 really old couples on either side of us. they of course introduced themselves as they have absolutely nothign else going on and we had a great relationship.

We now live 300 yards away from the next closest house. i went over to the closest and introduced myself while they were putting in the garden. The husband suffered a stroke and died a week later. so i'm done with ever doing that bullshit again.

Less your neighbors know about your business the better. Introduce yourselves as husband and wife and the next time your wife goes out of town for the weekend to visit family or whatever and you have your side piece over to the house the neighbor's wife will dime you out.

We're in the country, so it's a bit different than city neighbors. The house across the street did sell about four years ago- I rented some ground for a hay field from the previous owner, so I wanted to make contact with the new folks fairly soon. It was springtime, and the day they were moving in was the end of the week I spent spreading manure from the feedlot in our grape vineyard. Wind was blowing from the East, right in their direction. It does get pretty ripe, for a good half mile or so until I get the rototilling done and bury the stuff. I felt pretty bad, so I took over a package of steaks and introduced myself, apologized for the "rural aroma" and assured them it was very temporary. They understood, and were willing to continue the field rental. He's pretty cool, real handy, and mows the lawn for the old guy next door. I think she is very nice, if I say much more I'd come off like the creepy old guy across the street, and that role is already filled by the creepy old guy next door who walks around in only boxer shorts and has a full-on shell-shocked, Agent Orange Vietnam vet squatting in his attic.

Goods from the bakery and a card welcoming them to the neighborhood works nicely.
