I mean, it's a decent show

I'm just not seeking it out now on my merry way to work.

I like Les. Always have always will. I agree with all of you who have defended him with valid points.

I worked midnights off and on for a total of about ten years give or take. I am telling you first hand that it is a grind that chews on you for years after the fact.

Drifting, exhaustion and foggy thoughts and words are quite common. Because of this, I give Les the benefit of the doubt when he makes an error.

I guess the one thing that bothers me is that he is an easy target for ridicule and teasing from other hosts and coworkers. I guess every family has a younger brother or cousin that is there for fodder?

Harkins wasn't even at The Score for a month before he joined the cool table at lunch by picking on The Grobber.

The cool table doesn’t pick on Les. Everyone in media has fun using the multitude of his errors, slip ups, and general nonsense as content for their own show. Which is almost always followed by acknowledging that Les is a legend, an institution etc.

the problem with the overnight show usually isn't Les. Its the drunks that insist on dialing him up and wanting to talk about Bobby Hull and when he left the hawks for the WHA and "Oh boy duhya member dat guy from da 50 tree Sox?"

When the score was created they bragged how independent they were not having a big sports team on it's airwaves. They constantly ruffled teams feathers. Some classic score moments were feuds between hosts and teams.

Look how Matt nagys preseason sit the regulars strategy is being critiqued by Les and the score hosts. Cubs crazy Joe strategy is now brushed over as unimportant.

5@5 used to be great radio but now it's limp on it's Cubs talk and getting limper.

Les is in a lose lose situation.working a brain numbing shift. Then the cities main sports topic the Cubs which are 75% of his calls he has to be a pussy in his conversation tone.

Les is probably riding out the storm until social security and doesn't give a fuck.

They should have never put Les on the air with Shep because a night worker trying to work days is brutal.

He hero worships and bootlicks sports celebrities and even if his Cubs balls weren't cutoff has an odd way looking at things if his peeps are involved.

don't ever feel bad for Les. He is doing what he always wanted to do in life. Very few of us can say that

Les should be thankful he's been cashing checks as a radio host on a regular basis for 30+ years. He is terrible, overnights or otherwise. His main selling point as a host is that he's supposed to be a treasure trove of random facts, but people often point out his recollections are incorrect and a he got destroyed by Shepkowski in that trivia contest.

Yea, his best quality is that he's willing to work 10pm-5am.

His voice quality is decent, I guess.

His pay is cheap.

all of the above. I never listened to Les until this last year due to a second job, and the guy is really nothing of what he's sold as. Random memories, but not a trivia buff. He's borderline unlistenable, and I've tried. Good guy though, clearly.

I heard listening to Grobber's program is a total "Shit-show", figuratively and literally!

I seem to recall Pat Hughes telling one of his Santo stories about the day Ron's hair piece caught fire in the booth.

Anybody remember that or can fill in the blanks?

Was in New York. Head was too close to one of those electric space heater coils and it ignited. I seem to remember listening to game at time.

That's literally the best part of the show.

Les's show is very little about current sports events anymore. Or, if there is some, opinions aren't freely exchanged. it's now more specialized in memory lane, and players who were good to Les. Any current event goes off into a tangent on one of Les's experiences tied in somehow from 30 years ago. It's a shame now with mlb playoffs approaching having such a weak show.

Overnight radio is partially responsible for me getting through high school. (Don't ask) I will always stick up for Art Bell, Les, and Nick Digilio for the late night entertainment. I don't listen too much these days though. Art is dead, Nick has become a bit annoying in the Trump years, and Les is ok, but sports talk in general has bored me lately. Not gonna listen at 2 am if i don't even at 2 pm

So WSCR is a corporate shill for the team they currently broadcast?

Oh how I long for the days when they broadcast the Sox games and they weren't WSOX at all. Definitely not Sox 24/7 or anything like that. Totally team neutral.

I liked the story of Ron trying to use the soft-serve frozen yogurt machine before the yogurt had fully frozen, and then the lever got stuck and kept dispensing liquid yogurt all over the floor, so Ron just ran away.

I had forgotten that with the yogurt but that was good for a laugh. I feel kind of bad because I was done with Santo at the end because he just seemed lost 83% of the time. But he was something and they did have some fun. Moreland’s tenure made me realize that I best be careful what I wish for in future.

If they had a better backup than Zach Zaidman, I'd say they should scrap the play-by-play/color model and just use alternating solo guys with only occasional crosstalk. Ron Santo never told you anything about the game, he was part of the shtick. Ron Coomer also doesn't tell you about the game, but there's no shtick.

I liked Ron’s story about striking out three times in his first three at-bats in a game against a really tough pitcher (Gibson?). When facing him a fourth time, Santo hit a foul pop up near the dugout—and admitted that he prayed that it would be caught.

Isn't the Les credential-pull issue an old story? I thought that happened several years ago - unless this is a different incident.

I think originally it had to do with his abuse of the press buffet or something; or was it that maybe he pissed off Sharon whasshername, the Cubs PR person at the time.

Same way. 890 removed Coast-to-Coast and put Red-Eye radio in its place. Overnights is perfect for conspiracy radio.

I think it had to do with Julie Sweica...either he borrowed her credential or lent her his or something like that.
