Inspired by ththe ludicrous conversation by 312 that Mack is better than Urlacher. Guys on my list are recent obviously. Who do you older guys got?

List your age to help.

31 years old.

1. Ray Lewis
2. Brian Urlacher
3. JJ Watt
4. Ed Reed
5. Julius Peppers

Already edited because I forgot Watt. It’s crazy to leave Revis off this list though.

I wanted to list White. Couldn’t do it in good conscience. Was 10-11 during that remarkable 96 season.

Mack is awesome but change it to 5 years and we’re finally having a worthy conversation.

Also minor shoutout to Troy Polamalu. For 3 years he was as dominant as almost anyone in the league.

btw- The last trade I can think of that has felt like it was as much of a robbery as the Bears getting Mack is the Broncos stealing Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis.

I am not a Lewis guy. Sanders and Bailey were incredible, Sanders was a one-man defense.

I somewhat agree but when Bob Sanders was healthy he was a super upgraded version of Mike Brown. Destroyed offenses by himself. One of the big tragedies injury wise in recent league history.

That didn't take long...

Deion has to be on the list.
Reggie also.
Probably Lott.

I'm ok with Ray Lewis too. Rod Woodson? Hampton, Strahan, many more are in the conversation.

It gets fuzzy after that. But going back to the OP, IMO it's not crazy to say Mack is better than Urlacher. They're different players, plus Urlacher played his whole career in a big market. That probably matters for this conversation.

Mack has always been a damn animal.

You disappointed me old man. I was hoping for a Rickey Jackson mention.

Right but he has to do it for many more years. Urlacher is close to the pinnacle. Even taking into account the different roles/positions.

JJ Watt severely underloved in this thread btw.

The thing about Bailey is he played CB like none have before or since. Had an almost psychic knowledge of where the ball was so he could cover his man but also ballhawk the way usually only safeties and the very rare MLB (basically just Urlacher, Lewis and briefly Keuchly have been able to do it at that position) can. I remember a game where somebody said he covers the ball. Never forget that, made so much sense then to describe how a CB who was a complete shutdown corner could still manufacture the kind of production he did.

Other great corners with Champ's coverage skills never were able to make the big plays Champ Bailey did because they covered their man in a way that prevented the ball from being thrown their way. The only one who ever truly covered an entire half of the field was Bailey.

Only because Swilling and Mills didn't have the longevity.

All of whom were nevertheless better than Otis Wilson and Singletary.
