I listened most of the morning (mowing and raking hay), as usual, I find Matt very good on the air- he's self deprecating, has been able to keep up with some of the running jokes of the Suckage, and is really great when talking baseball and baseball history. I never get to listen enough to tire of the days off/band stuff that ticked so many other listeners off when he was a regular, and I always like a little non-sports talk. The "AP" seats at Wrigley discussion was very helpful...

So is this a permanent gig? Is he replacing Schuster and Esposito?

That's the way I understood it. However, Spiegs is definitely off next Saturday due to a prior commitment.

I liked what I heard with Bruce over the weekend. Always thought Spiegs is strongest talking baseball and matching him with Levine was a good
listen in my opinion for the 30 minutes I got to consume.

I don't even remember how I did in that.

I just remember the best thing about my team was the name (Big League Choo). In our defense it was a weird league. He wanted to go cyber-metrics with obp, slug, whip, k per 9 but also had rbi, sb, saves and I think he even had holds. It was an odd setup but talking golf with Rosner during the draft was a lot of fun.

Wow! Matt Speigel will visit again today to talk Cubs baseball. That's like having Julie visit to talk Bears football.

Please tell me they have moved past the "bleacher fight" of like 6 people involved, the annoying guy yelling to stop fighting, etc. NO ONE CARES!!!!

Cubs are .5 games ahead and we are talking about a few drunks making hispanic slurs. I have gotten slurs toward me. It sucks, but guess what it happens and will always happen.

I would not even spend a second on it, let alone half the day yesterday.

I was able to listen for a while and it was a comfortable 3 man weave. I hope they bring him in to talk playoff baseball at least once a week.

This is a bad thought. There are a lot of things to complain about in regards to Spiegel but his baseball knowledge is solid.

I didn't catch Speigs this week, but I do like the third man in studio for brief doses. The best I ever heard in this regard was when Stan Van Gundy was not coaching, and would go on Lebatard's radio show once most weeks during the basketball season, although he'd do all four hours and talk about anything. He was really good and they could organize their thoughts for a day and move on.

I suspect that they didn't really want to fire Matt, but DeCastro had a window to bring Connor in and he loves Connor for some half-assed reason. Repositioning him as a baseball specialist but not a reporter like a Levine is probably good for his career long-term. I have said all along that he's best suited for XM 89 MLB Network Radio, and with Brendan the suit and Goff both going to XM, somebody will put a word in for him and he can get some evening shifts in the offseason to prove himself.

Meanwhile, 4-5 hours in studio every Saturday, 1 hour in studio mid-week, primary substitute host during baseball season (except mornings), that's enough to at least keep him in circulation and give him some spending money to lose playing poker.

Speigs was the best they had on both baseball and basketball. They pumped Goff up as the hoops guy but Speigs was more informed as a hoops guy than Goff.
