Uh, actually that should be the other way around. Metallica isn't my cup of tea, and since say the mid 90s they have sold out and really put out some bad stuff, but in the 80s and early 90s they were one of the biggest bands in the world. Skynyrd has some good stuff, but to say that they are light years ahead of what Metallica was is simply inaccurate.

um, you can insult me, call me a bimbo, make fun of me but do that 'bout skynyrd thems is fighting words. Skynyrd is a far more superior band that made more inroads in the music industry then metallica ever did.

How many kids and adults do you see listening to Skynyrd and wearing the shirts over Metallica? Skynyrd is still being played on the radio, how many times a day do you hear a metallica song? Yes in the mid to late 80's Metallica was big, but really after enter sandman which was a BIG commercial success what have they done other then selling out and being more of a commercial factory produced band?
When was the last time Metallica toured and could sell out a place, maybe 10years ago. Skynyrd is still touring, granted not much new in the song department, and they seem to enjoy being out there on stage. Van Zandt sang his heart out at the concert a few weeks back and smilled while doing it. There are more kids and adults listening to bands that were popular in the 70's then some 80's bands.

give me 5 good reasons that skynyrd should be the one darrying around hetfield's sack.

Commercial or not, I still feel Metallica has had a bigger influence overall than Skynyrd. First off, most of Skynyrd is dead, and what few original members haven't taken a dirtnap yet don't even play with the band anymore. I think Billy Powell is the only original member still wtih the grou. While they may tour they are going to play smaller venues than Metallica would. Like it or not, Metallica is one of the main reasons why you have to pay to download songs from ITunes and such now.

To each his own. Both bands were great for thier respective audience, I just think that Metallica did more and has/had more influence than Skynyrd. I've never heard anyone say "I picked up the guitar because of Gary Rossington", but I have heard lots of people say they did so because of Kirk Hammet.

true not many people say they picked up the guitar because of rossington or played piano because of powell. I do respect the fact people have their own opinion. I used to like metallica when I was younger, but got so sick of their attitude and overall commercialism and overplay of sandman.

While you are free to hate the overplaying of "Enter Sandman," as it was annoying I'm sure, I must point out that "Freebird," is 2nd all time for radio airplay.

OK, since nobody will get it.

Both band's drummers have a thing for youngsters and spent time in prison (or are still in prison) for having sex with children. Skynards for sexual battery on some teenage girls, Dave Holland of Priest for trying to have sex with a retarded boy he was giving drumming lessons too. "Hey Dave... that's not a double bass drum your banging man.... that hurts!"

I think Holland shared a cell with Gary Glitter.

Perspective time: I never heard of either. The bands, yes; the guitarists, no.

How many people do you assume picked up a guitar because of "Stairway to Heaven?"

Probably a lot. If not solely because of 'Stairway', then something else Pagey did.

Saw 'em at the Miami Sea-Quarium in the spring of '75. Charlie Daniels opened. They were on a barge out in the water that was tied up to the grandstand. People in canoes, tubes, and boats encircled the stage. It was nuts. The bands were passing doobs and doing bongs on stage. Drinking straight from whiskey bottles. The audience was trying to splash and electrocute the guitarists. Police dogs were chewing up the patrons.
Long live Southern Rock!!!

I'm guessing not as many that picked up a guitar b/c of the Beatles or Jimi Hendrix or Eddie Van Halen.

There are some stats that essentially are tied to Hamer guitar sales and Eddie signing with the company that are staggering.

~And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Molly Hatchet
With 38 Special and the Johnny Van Zant Band.~
These are lyrics from The Drive-By-Truckers epic "Southern Rock Opera", a must listen to fans of Skynyrd, Southern culture or American history.
Who's the greatest Southern rock band? The easy answer is The Allman Brothers. And it would be valid, they're still doing it well. But my choice is Skynard and I can echo Mac for a lot of the reasons why.
But check out Southern Rock Opera. A lot a great cuts and a few interesting points of view on "the duality of the southern thing".

Same here. I like Skynyrd a lot, but Allmans were WAY better.

And yes, Frank, Metallica impacted the music industry miles more than Skynyrd... doesn't matter whether you like them or not, that's a fact.

I don't remember if I got 5, but I hit all the big ones last week. I'm not saying who is "better." All I'm saying in that Metallica has had much more of an impact, for better or worse, on the music biz than Skynyrd has.

Let us be honest with each other. There is no defensible position that you can take where Skynyrd is influential. Whom did they influence? You? that does not make them an influential band. They were good, to be sure, but original? Not really. Best in genre? No. Fun to listen to while drinking homemade potato vodka? BINGO!
