'08 Stats: 39.2 IP, 3 W, 2.50 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 19:18 K:BB
Market Value: Strong Sell (all leagues)
Lowdown: Floyd nearly pulled off the unthinkable for inflatable love cushions everywhere. Floyd's near second no-no has owners feeling "Comfortably Numb." The former Philadelphia top prospect's confidence in his off-speed stuff has soared as he's riddled hitters with a recipe of knee-buckling curves and changes. Without an overpowering fastball, he won't strikeout more than 6.00 batters per nine (4.31 K/9 in '08), but if his somewhat elusive command (4.08 BB/9) can sharpen, he has above average odds of totaling double-digit wins and an ERA near 4.00. Still, as Brandon Funston pointed out, his hideous 53.4 FB% could be disastrous as the weather warms in the very hitter-friendly Cell. His Field Independent Pitching forecast is bleak (4.77 ERA), which means you should package him immediately while his value is at its zenith.
Fearless Forecast: 175 IP, 11 W, 4.36 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 105 K

Him and Danks have been awesome surprises. I thought they'd be decent, but not this good. They keep this up, one of them will be an All Star this year.

It's amazing that Buehrle has been our 4th best started.

If I would have told you before the season, that after 6 weeks, Buehrle would be the 4th best you would have thought that was bad. Not the case. Buehrle hasn't been that awful. Vasquez, Danks, and Floyd have been that good.

The dugout space heater would beg to differ.

You have to wonder if all those innings and times seeing the same teams are starting to get to him.

Since the magical 2005 season, Buerhle is 23-26 with an ERA around 4.40. That's not top of the rotation stuff. Also his K/BB ratio is dropping like a rock. He was 3.75 in 2005, the last 2+ seasons he's been 2.31.

If I had Floyd on a fantasy team, I'd trade his ass too.

I didn't. It was in code. It was subtle. Big Fan was saying "Fuck Kenny Williams." Right?

Kidding. He was saying "Get ready. He's about to become average at best once the weather starts to warm. Once the hitters figure him out. Maybe now is the time to trade him."

Of course that's a possibility. I think he'll be good all year. Not great. He'll have a few bad starts. He's not an ace.

Why is he not an ace? Many scouts for many years have thought differently. I would be shocked if he kept this pace up, but it's not like the guy is coming out of nowhere. Same with Danks.

Why isn't he an ace?

Cuz there are very few in baseball. Hey, I hope he is. When I say ace, I mean a guy that will have a sub 3.00 ERA for the season. That's what I consider an ace.

Doesn't mean he can't be good. Very few guys, especially in the AL, are gonna have a sub 3.00 ERAs

Right. That's my standard for an ace. That's just me.

18+ wins with <10 losses with an ERA around 3 and a half, especially in the AL, I think many would consider an ace.

Wins and losses should never be used to judge pitchers. They can't control run support. Sometimes you can have 18-20 game winners from guys with 4+ ERA's. Sometimes you'll have 12-15 game winners with ERAs below 4.

ERA is what I look at first. Then WHIP.

Never say Never. If a guy has an ERA of 1.80, but got shitty run support and is 10-10 on the year, and someone else goes off and goes say 25-8 with an ERA around 4, the latter gets the Cy Young.

Wrong. No guy with an ERA above 3 will ever get the Cy Young. Look it up. I don't think it's ever happened.

Certainly not 4.00+ ERA. I know that has never happened.

I looked it up. The past 25 years. NL and AL. So the last 50 Cy Youngs.

Only 5 times out of 50 has the winner had a +3.00 ERA. Ironically, both Sox winners were among these. Lamar Hoyt (1983) and Jack McDowell (1993).

This is going back 25 years. I doubt anybody before that had a +3.00 ERA since hitting wasn't as dominate before the 80's

Steve Stone had a 3.23 in '80 and Mike Flannigan had a 3.08 in '79.

Ok. But you see my point. It's rare.

Plus, Frank said a guy with a 4.00 with a lot of wins could win it.

That has never happened. It never will.

I am not ready to build the Gavin FLoyd wing in Cooperstown, nor am I ready to throw in the towel with him after one bad start.

If you need help throwing in the towel just ask Kerry Wood or Mark Prior. They're really good at it.

How about a Gavin Floyd statue in rememberance of the 2 almost no-hitters in 2008. Then the Sox can have Gavin Floyd bobble head night on the anniverseries of those games every year.
