It’s no secret that the Bears pass rush has become anemic with the hampering of Khalil Mack, and I think we can safely say that even with a heathy Mack.. Floyd isn’t getting to the QB. In today’s game, the Bears were lining up Floyd in the slot against wide outs and TE’s at times (most likely prepped him all week to shadow Gronk).

Smith, in the handful of blitzes I’ve noticed him on, has managed to create pressure. Granted, he’s coming from a different angle than a guy on the outside. But I think he’s showing a knack for it.

Both Smith and Floyd are similar in weight, but Smith is much more explosive and plays with better leverage.. while Floyd is at least competent in coverage. My question here is, anyone else here want to see Smith coming off the edge opposite Mack and see if there’s something there in terms of a pass rusher? Trevathon can QB the defense from the inside, and Floyd can roam the middle of the field cleaning up TE’s and RB’s.

Thoughts? I feel like they have to try something because we can’t rely on Mack alone.

I agree that I would like to see Smith involved in blitz packages more. It was great when it was just Mack and the front three getting pressure, but when they can't do that, you have to bring someone else in from time to time.

Move Smith around, but don't move him to the outside permanently. His instincts are too good, and he's on the small side. He's gonna be great on the interior.

Floyd is just a bust.

I’m fine with this. But I’d like to see Smith there for a game or 2, just to see what it looks like. If he turns out to have double digit sack potential, I think that outweighs a lot of other skills he may also have.

Indeed. Move some parts around and see if there are positions certain players are better suited for. Floyd may thrive as a run stopper that’s tough to pass over the middle on. He does not thrive at all in what he’s doing right now. And I don’t think the move hurts Smith at all. He seems like a guy that has the kind of skills that can shine regardless of what side he’s on.
