5-year extension with Bears makes Robbie Gould NFL's highest-paid kicker
By Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporter
4:44 PM CDT, May 12, 2008

Robbie Gould figured his big payday was coming. It was just a matter of when.

The Bears made Gould the highest-paid kicker in the NFL Monday by signing him to a five-year, $15.5 million extension through 2013. Gould's agent, Brian Mackler, said that it's the "richest deal for a kicker in NFL history."

The $15.5 million includes performance incentives and a $4.25 million signing bonus.

"It's pretty awesome. I'm excited," Gould said while dining Monday afternoon with Mackler. "Today is a good day."

Gould's absence during voluntary workouts stirred talk that he was upset with his contract situation. True, he might not have totally pleased, but Gould's frustration wasn't going to escalate into an ugly battle. Gould will be with the team when organized team activities begin May 19.

"I wasn't going to hold out by any means," he said. "The workouts, they were voluntary.

"I'm just glad to get the deal done and to stay in Chicago. I love the fans. I love the city. I'm just really exciting about staying here for the next six years."

Gould is the Bears all-time field goal percentage leader among kickers with at least 50 attempts, connecting on 84.8 percent of his kicks (84 of 99). The former Penn State Nittany Lion has been successful on 99 of 100 PATs. Of his 84 FGs, 35 have come from 30-39 yards; 25 from 40-49 yards. His career-long of 49 yards came against the Giants in New York.

With Gould's original four-year contract up after the 2008 season, it made sense for the Bears to lock up the three-year pro. Bears general manager Jerry Angelo spoke about rewarding high-character guys, and he followed through with extensions to Alex Brown and Desmond Clark. The Bears are having contract discussions with Tommie Harris, Brian Urlacher and Devin Hester.

"I just want to come in here next season and be the best kicker in the league," Gould said. "Signing a new deal doesn't change my goals. I still want to be the best player I can be, just go out and do my job to help my team win."

I guess he didn't have to use his AK.

I'm sorry, that was just bad. Like today, even 15 years ago I was not hip.

My Dear Internet Bears Fans,
Does anyone beside myself think that this is an atrocity? Is there no sense to this madness at Halas Hall any longer? Robbie. What kind of grown man goes by Robbie? Absolutely terrifying.
This guy is not too reliable outside of 40 yards (27 for 46 40-49 yards, 0-2 over 50 yards). He is good, but he is not worth $3 Million dollars a year. Plus a four million for signing. Insane.
I fully expect to see Angelo as my next cellmate.
Your Dear Friend,

P.S. I still love you Jerry. Thank you for the Mother's Day fruit basket.

I couldn't have said it better. This guy is nothing but a slightly above average kicker ONLY because he is accurate from inside 40. However, over 40 is a crap shoot. Lovie will not even attempt a +40 on a wintery day. Then, it is a stretch for him to hit the 10 yard line on a kickoff, which puts big stress on your special teams.

We should start a list of kickers better than Gould. I would not be suprised to find him in the 10-20 range in the NFL.

I found this interesting. I don't think we'd argue that he's the best Bears kicker since Kevin Butler who was considered a pretty good kicker in his day. Butler was 40/72 from 40-49 yards or a paltry 52.6%. From 50+ he was 16/42 or 38.1% Inside of 40 yards he was 186/216 or 86.1%.

Gould isn't worth the best kicker in the game money, but he's got to be in the top ten even though his range appears limited. Soldier Field is hell for kickers.

I think Butler's rep was enhanced by his willingness to get dirty. His Madden love was built on being tough I think, and not by hitting clutch 50 yarders.

I hope $10 million is based on whether he can start making long distance field goals.

27% of it upfront; he has earned that. The incentives probably make up a big chunk of the rest. I doubt he is around for the entire length of the deal.

And long FG's at Soldier Field often are nothing more than a crapshot, especially in November and December.

At 3 points a whack, he's more of a threat than our O team!

Hopefully Rex & co can get him in closer than the 50 yard line before petering out.

This is a good signing. Worries about the lack of long field goals are misplaced for a few reasons:

1.) I don't care who the kicker is, once you get passed 45 yards, the percentage is going to drop quite low. Factor in field position and kicking long field goals is pretty much a losing proposition unless the score is desparately needed. It's usually better to just go for it on 4th down or punt it away. And he has done it when he has had to; he made the long kick against Seattle in the playoffs, for example.

2.) Field goal percentage, in general, is highly, highly unstable. There is practically no correlation in field goal percentages made from one year to the next. Small sample sizes are the main reason for this, but also the variability of field goal distances and situations make a difference as well. And yet his percentage has been outstanding the last two seasons. Those types of kickers are rare.

3.) Despite your guffaws, Gould is consistently one of the better kickoff men in the game. A majority of his shorter kickoffs come at Soldier Field, where- unsurprisingly- kickoffs tend to be a lot shorter than in domes or warm weather stadiums. That's why statistics like average kickoff length or touchbacks are suspect; unless you have some metric that accounts for weather, you are comparing apples and oranges.

Chances are the deal is back-loaded and incentive laden, and the long contract allows the bonus to be spread more thinner across the contract. If the cap continues to expand as it has done (and I know there are a lot of questions as to whether that will happen), then this will remain perfectly reasonable across the length of the contract.

Have you seen our offense? Desperate doesn't begin to describe it.

If our offense was capable of getting to the 20-30 yard line consistently, it's not too big of a deal. But, with an anemic offense, having a kicker who could make even 30-40% of kicks over 50 yards would be a big plus. The Bears' coaching staff won't even let him ATTEMPT anything over 50 (and they think hard about anything over 45 yards).

I agree that the numbers for his contract are inflated, which makes this much ado about nothing for the most part. He'll likely see only 1/2 to 2/3 of that money.

Irish Boy, that read more like an example of why kickers are overrated, which means that paying him $3M a year seems even more ridiculous, when you could probably get a guy 1/3rd of the price that puts up comparable production. The bottom line is he is not the best kicker in the league, and not even close. He will never be considered the best kicker. He is not worth that money and is overpaid. It's pathetic they will overpay for a kicker but not bring in much needed FA help. The draft wasnt terrible, but the offseason has been a trainwreck for Angelo.

Gould is easily one of the top 10 kickers and maybe top 5 going off the last two years.

He is 24-28 between 40-49 yards in '06 and '07. Thats pretty damn good. He was money in the playoffs in '06 in pretty bad conditions.

Why did JA make Gould the highest paid kicker ever?
