Yeah. But 100+ innings is different for a releiver. It's probably easier to pitch 200+ as a starter. You get 4 days of rest.

Marmol has been going back to back days a lot. 2 innings a lot. You're gonna win this division. Lou shouldn't ride Marmol so hard. See if another guy can do it every now and then. If that guy fails so what? You're gonna run away with this division. You can lose some games if it means saving Marmol.

You want him strong for the playoffs.

Marmol should be an all star this year if continues to pitch this well.

Lieber had a nice outing too. And it's pretty nice to have a guy like Derosa batting eighth. Pretty good depth.

Joe West has got to go. He blew the call on the Soto Hr, and he made the wrong call on the stolen base in the eighth inning. His best work came in the the Naked Gun, and that was 20 years ago.

If Howry or somebody else in the backend of that bullpen could get some outs in the 7th and 8th innings, Lou wouldn't have to rely on Marmol all the time.

I agree with Steve Phillips on one thing, that stupid hill in center field has got to go.

Looks like Soriano is off his hot streak. He had some fastballs right in his wheelhouse that he missed on. It was nice to see Ramirez go deep and Soto with the in the park shot. Great to have so many good bats, that they don't suffer when a couple guys take the collar. Lee with the RBI single was big too too. He needed that one. Hope he can get on a good streak again. Look for the Astro pitchers to knock down a couple Cubs tomorrow, with a few Astro's taking a dusting this evening.

Then again, the Cubs will probably have a 15 game lead in Mid August and Lou can rest Marmol for 6 weeks. Pitch him every 3 games, at most, at that point, to keep him fresh.

I still contest that he threw 110 last year between Iowa and the Cubs and tossed 70+ innings out of the pen in the last few months of the year. He can take the load.

The guy I'd be worried about if I was a Cub fan is Geovany Soto who's on pace to have over 500 plate appearances which is a lot for a catcher especially in the heat here.

Hawkeye-that's a good point. But he's got youth going for him now, which helps. But if I were making out the lineup, I might be very tempted to put Soto at DH in some of the interleague games, to keep his bat in the lineup, while giving him a rest from catching that day. Just a few games here and there at DH might really help. Plus, Blanco has done a good job so far this year in games where he got some playing time. Keeping him sharp would be good too. I know that Blanco is not the hitter that some of the other guys off the bench are, but with Darryl Ward out right now (who likely would have been the DH) it might be a good move.

I'm betting on seeing Blanco tonight. It's been almost a week.
Marmol can throw 170 innings, but that's with 5 days rest in between 6 innings at a time. This is a tough call.

I agree with this point. Basically, he needs to get out from behind the plate every day. Lou is running the risk of having a guy who's is setting up to be a legit 300 hitter and having him tire out in the summer or worse in the stretch by playing him too much. At this point, for DH you'd have options of Cedeno/Fontenot/Ward so he'd a better option than them.

Wesley Snipes once taught me - always bet on black.

I'd expect to see Blanco either Saturday or Sunday in Pittsburgh.

lou is looking for someone else to rely on. he brought weurtz in the 8th last night, and marmol would never have pitched had weurtz gotten the job done. he is bringing howry in more and more, and howry is looking better.

however, when push comes to shove, like it did again last night, when you need an out, marmol is the man. i am sure he didnt want to have to bring marmol in last night, but he had to have him ready, just in case, and i was glad he did.

i agree, sort of. soto is fine as a DH, but doing then is basically having blanco as you extra bat in every interleague away game, and cedeno, fontenot, ward, even hoffpauier are better options than that. that is a good time to do that maybe once during an interleague series, but i wouldnt do that each game.

Converted catcher. If the Cubs win tonight, you'll see a few guys get a breather on Wednesday, Geo, Lee and ARam.

The problem with DHing Soto is then you don't have a backup catcher for that game. If Blanco gets hurt or ejected, Soto has to go behind the plate and you lose the DH and the pitcher has to bat. If they bring up a 3rd catcher for those games, then you can move Soto to DH. That actually wouldn't be a bad idea, since you wouldn't need as many pitchers for AL games since you don't have to worry about double switches.

Dempster's command sucks tonight. Looks like Soriano is back to swinging at everything in the dirt.

Your know your bench is weak, when you send Fontenot up in the 9th, needing a homer to tie. I'm about done with Edmonds, hes finished.

Take a deep breath. Calm down. OK? Better? It's one game. They're 10 over .500 in May. I know I sound like Bernstein, but, well... I'm not sure how to finish that sentence.

Do me a favor and look at the starting lineup and their batting average. I believe the only sub .280 average hitters were Edmonds and Dempster. I'll take that. You're not going to win too many games scoring two runs. They couldn't break through tonight.
Now, I'm not giving Edmonds too much more rope either, but let this play out two or three more weeks before we throw Edmonds overboard as chum. He's played three games.
For whatever reason, Sampson plays merry hell with the Cubs. I don't get it and neither do they.
Now, I need to shower as I've just defended the mascara'd moron. 'Scuse me.

I hope we see Sampson again. He looks incredibly hittable. One game is all it was. I am less than concerned.

Let me throw out some cliches

You don't win a World Series in May.

You win 60, lose 60 and the middle 42 is what counts.

One game doesn't make or break a season.

I said it before, they win 2 in Houston, I am happy, good chance that will happen. If they continue to play well at home and able to play 5-10 games over on the road, they wont have a issue, they are by far the best team in the central.
