He is Mark Grace but played a few more seasons. Good player, not great.

Well, he was a lot better than Mark Grace, but Ruffcorn is right.

I don't doubt that might be the case. This smacks of all those friends of John McGraw that got in like High Pockets Kelly and Pop Haines.

Like Chet posted upthread, you really gotta take a look at Evans and especially Dave Parker now.

Those are all similar guys and all of them just short. The problem is that Dawson got in. He belongs with that group too.

Baines got in on the strength of his coaching.

The comparison to Dave Parker is absurd. Parker was the best right fielder in baseball over a five year stretch. His “black ink” and “gray ink” stats dwarf Baines.

What's your stance on Joe Carter? I always thought he'd get more love. I didn't realize that he had only 2200 hits.

Parker was sure headed to the Hall....too bad he got involved in drugs, because he could still play into his mid and late 30s

Mark Grace is no way a HOFer.

Will Clark is like Baines. Both guys known more on a regional level. Clark got more exposure because he was on better teams who got to the playoffs consistently and got to a WS too. Because of that Clark got more national tv coverage and is a better known player.

But Will Clark is more of a HOF'r than Grace is.

Baines was in a World Series too.

But neither of these three being discussed or Lee Smith belong in the Hall of Fame. None of these guys are famous.

Harold Baines was once traded for a guy who hit 600 home runs. Baines is in the Hall of Fame. With 200 fewer home runs.

Oh no. Cubs fans are mad the Sox got an undeserving guy in the hall of fame. He can go into the same room as all the undeserving Cubs players that are already in.

He'd be less than the guys mentioned above. Dale Murphy would be a guy who fits with those above.

"Dwarf"? I think that's a bad take. Yeah, Parker had a more brilliant peak, but the "adjustment" being made to take into consideration just how damn difficult it was to hit in Comiskey Park during Baines's career is nowhere near correct. Also, Baines was an elite defender prior to injuring his knee. Granted, that occurred relatively early in his career. Anyway, Parker is probably the best of that group that includes Baines, Dawson, Evans, Murphy, etc. And if Dawson and Baines are in, he should be as well.

Grace lead the 1990's in hits other than Rose every player that has led a decade in hits is in the HOF

Baines was a solid player, no way a hall of famer though.
Hof should only be for best of the best. I remember Jordan Bernfield on Kaps tv show a few years back saying Alfonso Soriano belonged in the Hof. Soriano Hof would be a disgrace.

Baines has to be the only position player elected to the HoF who played his entire career in the expansion era (1969+) who didn't finish in the top 5 for MVP voting one time.

I can't think of any other player.

Power hitter in a pitcher's ballpark

RBI man

He owned GWRBI when that was an official stat!

Murphy's numbers are inflated by where he played. He's more like Chuck Klein.

Anyway, I'd say Larry Walker is more deserving than any of those guys.
