HEAVILY dependent on the inexact science of defensive metrics...but you know that

Nope, not this year. His WAR number is mostly from offense.

Seems high given his OPS is only .780.

It is what it is. I dont make the formulas.

Im using Baseball Reference WAR, btw

The only WAR worth discussing.

That is a huge value! He should totally opt out this year as teams would be lining up to sign him for anything up to $40M per year.

Right now Heyward is the guy they signed from the Cardinals after 2015. 290ish average..good OBP, not much power + Gold Glove Defense. The Cubs fucked around and tried to make him a 30 HR hitter again(they admitted as much in his press conference signing). It's great he's turned it around but sucks two years went down the drain thanks to their science experiment of making him a power hitter.

Take contract entirely out of the discussion, if you had a starting RF with Heyward's production you would continuously be looking to upgrade at that position. Maybe you would be satisfied to stand pat if other positions were more of a priority but that position would always be on your wish list.

You're preaching to the choir. The things that bother me most:

1) He is blocking other good young talent from playing daily,
2) It will prevent the Cubs from spending those dollars down the road,
3) I have never seen a guy that looks like he swings so hard and the ball doesn't carry anywhere near the distance that it appears it would.

But I will take him playing well because he is here to stay. He seems like a great team first guy, so I have no personal animosity towards him. I know he wants to be successful. I just can't see him ever living up to that contract. Hell people crapped on Mark Grace because he didn't have power. There are certain positions where power is the expectation, and RF is one of them.

Everyone knew they overpaid for him so of course he won’t live up to the contract . He’s playing well, the defense is always there , I’ll enjoy the ride .

Like I said, they tried to get power out of him and fucked his swing up for 2 seasons.

He finally may be close to the guy who played for the Cardinals in 2015 but that is not the guy they anticipated him being when they signed him. Lester let slip that Theo had him identified as his CF of the future on Theo's private big board. So he has lost anticipated value at the time of contracting on that alone. However, they were obviously projecting to progress as a hitter, even beyond the increased power you already referenced. I believe they also had him pegged for leadoff at the time of signing but I may be incorrect on that point.

They are making the best of a bad situation. The need to paint is otherwise is, to be nice, unsurprising for some of the posters in this thread.

Len,

On those 100+ degree days up in those booths at Wrigley, you ever go "Full-Harry Caray" and go shirtless walking around the catwalks with beer in hand?

Kasper, you've probably addressed this on your broadcast, but what are your thoughts on MLB regulating defensive shifts? Seems similar to the NBA' s Hack-A-Shaq rule--creating an unnecessary rule to cater to players with a deficiency in their game not shared by 95% of the players in the league.

What's the prevailing sentiment/scuttlebutt around the league on defensive shifts being restricted? I imagine Maddon--being one of the primary progenitor's of defensive shifts--opposes any rules limiting them.

93 NBA Finals, who'd you have, Suns or Bulls?

Given the issues we've seen recently with SportsNet Los Angeles and the erstwhile CSN Houston, as well as with the Big Ten Network, why shouldn't fans be worried this time about impasses between cable companies and a new regional sports network, particularly one in competition with the regional sports network partially owned by the market's predominant cable provider?

Will the Cubs spend any money this offseason or make any big trades? If so, what type of players do you see them targeting? Will Maddon be the Cubs manager in 2019?

Welcome back, Len. McNeil & Parkins had Pat Hughes on today and Pat shared some of his favorite off season activities/hobbies.

I'm curious as to how you spend some off season time? I can only assume that music and hockey are included?

Thanks.
