Can the NBA guys on here give me a breakdown? I read they are going to waive one of the players. I'm guessing it's mainly about the picks?

The Memphis Grizzlies have acquired Chicago Bulls forward Justin Holiday for two players and two future second-round draft picks, league sources told ESPN.

The Grizzlies sent the Bulls their 2019 and 2020 second-round picks, along with forward Wayne Selden and guard MarShon Brooks, sources said.

Memphis coveted the athletic playmaking ability of Justin Holiday, who is averaging 11.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 35 minutes a game. Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Memphis had believed it had a deal including Brooks and Selden for Kelly Oubre Jr. in early December, but that deal fall apart when the Phoenix Suns were under the impression they were receiving Memphis' Dillon Brooks as part of a three-way deal.

Memphis has struggled lately and coveted the athletic playmaking ability of Holiday, who is averaging 11.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 35 minutes a game.

Holiday is on an expiring contract and could be moved again before the Feb. 7 trade deadline as long as his contract is not aggregated with another player. However, by giving up the two second-round picks, it would seem Memphis' intent is to re-sign Holiday this summer.

The Grizzlies remain $463,000 under the luxury tax with the $4.4 million addition of Holiday.

The Bulls are in a dealmaking mode, shopping center Robin Lopez and forward Jabari Parker in trade talks, sources said.

With the trade, Chicago has 16 players on its roster and will need to waive a player. Management was still working on that decision Thursday night; however, the team probably will waive guard Cameron Payne, league sources said. After the Oklahoma City Thunder selected him 14th overall in the 2015 NBA draft, Payne, 24, has struggled to stay healthy and find traction in the league.

ESPN front office Insider Bobby Marks contributed to this report.

Thank god Payne will finally be gone.

Maybe about the picks but more a case of addition by subtraction. Low reward move which should provide more time for Hutchinson.

So the Bulls spend two picks to acquire McDermott as the final piece to their championship puzzle, then dump him and another valuable chip (Gibson) on OKC for Payne and other garbage, then cut Payne?

I was disappointed Brooks was drafted before the Bulls picked at #30. They got some guy named Butler.

Heavy tanking now. Excellent.

The official social media release:

Quote:
The Chicago Bulls have traded Justin Holiday to the Memphis Grizzlies for MarShon Brooks and Wayne Selden Jr., as well as the Grizzlies’ 2019 and 2020 second-round picks. In a related move, the Bulls also waived Cameron Payne.

In earlier news.

Most likely uses of these 2 picks:
49% chance they're packaged to move a player the Bulls don't want like Parker and save money
49% chance they're sold for cash on draft night
2% chance the Bulls actually make picks with them, because draft picks are of limited value to a team that's rebuilding.

90% chance Bulls trade Lauri rather than signing him to a new deal when his rookie contract is done. They hold a press conference announcing a pivot toward acquiring even more younger players then they shortly sign Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to new deals after bringing them out of retirement.

Holiday playing 30 minutes fit the tank. Blakeney playing 30 minutes fits it even better.

You skipped the part where they ever so subtly start burying the player they're about to let go via rumors about attitude, health, character, work ethic, etc. to the press and then pretend that the release of said player will solve all of the team's problems.

Spoken like a guy that unsurprisingly doesn't watch the games. Those minutes will go to Hutchinson. Hutchinson is actually better than Holiday so I don't know how it will help tanking efforts.

Blakeney's garbage ass is way too small to play the 3 anyway.

Hopefully Jabari gets back in the mix.

what is the point of this trade? is there a 2 to 3 sentence explanation? i could give two shits about holiday, but how does this put them in a better position long term?

In the modern NBA there is virtually no difference in size between the 2 and 3.

Two lottery tickets. Holiday wasn't being re-signed at the end of the season.

so the organization that recently sold a 2nd round pick for cash is now going to acquire 2nds and just hope they get lucky? if 2nd round picks are part of your rebuilding process... you need a new process

Which "modern NBA" do you actually watch? there aren't a lot of 6'2 threes. Particularly 6'2 threes that have the body of a high schooler.

Purpose of the trade is to provide more time for the Rookie Hutchinson. Probably will have to work Jabari in if for no other reason than it ups his trade value. None of the guys traded for factor into anything though Selden is an upgrade over bums like Blakeney and Shaq the Non Harrison. Draft picks are neglible and will likely be flipped at some point.

There aren't a lot of 6'2" SG's either. I gave you the numbers from 2016. It's the same now. We argue a lot. But you can't argue facts so there is nothing more to say on this topic.

If they want to go full tank mode, Cameron Payne should be playing 48 minutes a night. I would not have moved him.

How many 6'2 small forwards are currently starting in the NBA? I didn't even bother to read the silly article because its not relevant.

Lets settle it this way. I will bet barring injury that the majority of minutes will go to Hutchinson and you can bet on Blakeney

$100 to be paid off at the end of the season. Deal?

When discussing the height of NBA players at positions...knowing the average height of NBA players at positions seems to be extremely relevant.

Wager declined. Chandler Hutchison is already playing more minutes than Antonio Blakeney. Why would that change? Both of their minutes will increase, unless you think Hutchison is going to play 52 minutes a game.

No you stated that Holiday's minutes will go to Blakeney. Are you stating that you don't believe the things you post? Not about minutes going up. You essentially are claiming that Blakeney will be the starting 3. Ok. I will bet that he isn't. What say you?

Ok since avg height of positions is relevant admittingly then explain to me why the average height of 3's isn't anything close to 6'2?

You argument is silly unless the avg height of the positions you cite is 6'2.

It isn't. 6'2 guys don't play 3 and to br honest Blakeney is undersized for 2. He has the body of a 1 and the game of a 3. There is no way they play that gunning MF significant minutes.

They also aren't tanking. Its more important for them to see what they have in their young guys core than it is too tank.

Some of Holiday's minutes will go to Blakeney, yes. Blakeney is playing 15 minutes a game right now. I'd bet that average goes up for the remainder of the season. Do you take that bet?

Where are you getting 6'2" from? You continue stating it. No player we have discussed is 6'2".

There is no way he is 6'4. Do you want to take that bet? Before you confirm i'm going with his actual and not his listed height?

I will bet $50 that his minutes decline as the season goes on? What say you post his avg minutes (or i will) and i will bet that they decline from now til the end of the season. . Regardless if that decline is .1 of a second or not. Bet?

Currently he is at 15.8 minutes per game. I'm willing to bet that it decreases. What say you?

I guess I have to wait and see where Selden fits in the rotation. He seems to be the same player as Blakeney. No bet, for now. Ask me again in a week.

Forget it. You ducked out on potential bets. One of them happened to be your own.

He and Selden aren't the same guy. Selden actually can guard 2's and 3's and is a better player.
