Quote:
The Denver Broncos are going right back to the defensive well with their next head coach hire and have selected Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio as their next head coach according to multiple reports.

ESPN first reported the news, adding it is a four-year deal with a fifth-year option for Fangio.

Fangio was the Bears defensive coordinator from 2014 through 2018, serving in the role for both John Fox and Matt Nagy, when the latter was hired this offseason. Prior to that, Fangio worked as the defensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers, brought by Jim Harbaugh from Stanford to San Francisco when the coach made the leap to the NFL.

The Broncos had narrowed down their search to Fangio and Mike Munchak, the Steelers offensive line coach.

That sucks, but good for him getting his opportunity to be head coach! A long and successful career deserves a shot. Hopefully the Bears can get bowles or donatell to take over

"Find" someone?

With this Bears defense, the absolute best defensive coaches out there are going to be beating down the doors at Halas Hall looking for a job.

Who are they going to get? This is a problem.

Wasn't Bowles considered "the absolute best" DC candidate available?

He's going to the Bucs.

Should promote someone if there's a good candidate. Otherwise you need someone who won't change a thing and who commands respect.

It's been stated in a variety of articles about the Arians hire. Sounds firm.

sucks.

I don't think the defensive success was primarily based on scheme but it definitely played a part.

Good for Vic.

Has Bowles officially signed a deal?

He's gonna go to TB because he knows he's got a chance at succeeding Arians once he retires (again).

Sounds like the deal is getting finalized now.

Arians and Bowles seem to be buddies based on their Cardinals connection.

Yeah, Frank, it doesn't really work that way. Money and prior relationships talk.

Thank goodness Ryan Pace appears to be somewhat competent. If we had GB decision makers around here we'd probably be looking at Oakland or TB for our next DC.

I completely understand any head coaching candidate taking their shot when a job is offered, but I think Denver was far and away the worst position available. Elway's status with ownership means the coach is always going to be targeted first even for his own failings. Not to mention it's easy to envision the Chargers and Chiefs being good enough to relegate them to irrelevancy for the next 3-4 years.

Better chance of the Raiders' 2nd round pick not being #32.

On the flip side of this, Fangio running the D and Kubiak running the O (if that's what happens) in Denver is a nice coaching tandem.

It didn't sound like he had any other interest. He has to take his shot.

I know MANY here, prior to the season, wouldn't have minded if Fangio didn't let the door hit him on the ass on the way out...myself included. This defense is stocked with studs. The Bears will be fine.
