I don't think this will ever go down as someone from the Nagy tree. There is simply no connection there.

It's a little like saying Buddy Ryan belongs on the Ditka coaching tree.

No defensive coach can truly come from the tree of an offensive coach but when they're making these trees that never matters

It does matter. A HC has to have a specific influence on the coordinator for it to be a "tree". It's not just some dudes that worked at the same place and time together

So if Fangio isn't from the Nagy tree, he must be from the Fox tree, right?

Fangio coached in the NFL for 30 years prior to working under Nagy for 1 year. So yeah, it makes sense that Nas sees Fangio as a branch on the Nagy tree.

Broncos blocked a couple of teams from interviewing Gary Kubiak, who holds a front office position with them.

I can't imagine Fangio is the type who would take a HC position with a coordinator (and one with lots of head coaching experience and a close friendship with the GM) being imposed on him.

He must have REALLY wanted a coaching gig

I wonder how often such forced relationships are successful? Fangio wasn't forced on Nagy, although it was strongly recommended.

The relationship in Denver is a little different as Kubiak will win any power struggle, should one arise and will certainly be Elway's ears in the locker room. On the other hand Kubiak said he didn't want to HC again, if you believe him.

Did Lovie and Johnson influence Rivera or was it Reid? Then why is Rivera on the Reid tree? Same is true for Bowles and to a lesser extent Harbaugh. You could argue that Nagy helped Fangio get a position that he failed to get for 30 years by giving him freedom and because he had success.

FWIW, Wikipedia does indeed list Buddy Ryan (as well as Jack Del Rio) under the Ditka tree.

If you count players under Ditka who eventually became head coaches, there are quite a few:

Ron Rivera
Mike Singletary
Leslie Frazier
Sean Payton (!)
Jeff Fisher
Jim Harbaugh

This is my point. Ditka had very little to do with them becoming a head coach or influenced their defensive or offensive philosophy.

OK, this now becomes a huge test for Nagy and Pace. Who's Nagy's guy, if any?

Why would Fangio accept a HCINO gig? On top of that, he has to work for batshit crazy Elway.

You maybe win the Superbowl with the Bears next year with the #1 defense.

4 year contract at a HC salary.

If he's fired he's still fine. He'd have a line of groveling head coaches in their 30s begging him to be their DC.

I wonder if they are considering some NCAA defensive coordinators. Maybe Shoop from Mississippi State or Tressel from Michigan State.

I would cast a wide net. This has got to be a very attractive job with a lot of potential for it to be a stepping stone to HC for anyone who takes it.

He's wanted to be a head coach for years and someone finally offered him a job. He's 60 and may not get another opportunity. I don't blame him for accepting. Even if he sucks he won't have a hard time being a defensive coordinator in the future.

Will this be primarily Nagy's decision, or Pace's? Or Ernie Accorsi.

Doesn't Pace have a connection to Gregg Williams?

I really hope it's not going to be him.

Maybe if you turn injuries ‘off’ in Madden 2020..
