No one was. We have the posting history to prove it. Well, every but me has it.

I agree with this. They had 2 players (Mack and Roquan) learning on the fly. They also sucked closing games.

In '86 they also got back two Pro Bowlers that sat out '85.

Different game and younger players. They aren't Hollywood and they don't hate the head coach.

But they all lost their beloved DC.

Bears defense gonna be livin’ in a vision next year. Not livin’ in circumstances.

I don't know that they can be better next year, but I don't think they have to be to have a good season.

Pretty happy with this hire. An experienced 3-4 guy with success in Baltimore. About as good as you could do once they were not interested in Wanny

No issues with the head coach. They love him too. Plus the offense should help the defense more next season. Payton was getting long in the tooth by 1986 and McMahon was done.

It's a good hire, but let's not ignore that Ravens team with HOFers Lewis, Suggs, Reed and others really weren't shaped by him.

No one said he shaped them. But that experience could only benefit him...and will give him credibility with the team.

Pagano also coached secondaries in CLE and Oakland that were top ranked vs the pass. Regular Reader is salty

Nah. Just pointing out some inconvenient truths. I already said I don’t like the hire because it’s a good one.

Lewis was done at 36. Reed was 33.

Alan Page was a great Bear also.

Yikes. Nagy really wants zero to do with the defense. Really revealing that he’s a glorified OC.

Page was 33 when the Bears got him.

He was probably on the Supreme Court before he was 36.

Will definitely be worse next year through the fault of no one. What they did this year is unsustainable.

Smith and Mack get a training camp. Nichols, smith and Jackson gain experience. Floyd has two hands

Sure. Almost a zero chance they have the success they did this year though. They are still going to be very good barring major injuries obviously.

Barring injury, they will be better next year. All their key players are young or mid-prime. Why do they get worse?

Your argument is that this year was a fluke? I disagree.

They had one of the best defenses of the past 30 years this year on a per snap basis, according to DVOA. All the best defenses recently, Seahawks, Broncos, Ravens, etc, couldn’t sustain that success in back to back seasons, even when they had really good defenses the next year. It will be nearly impossible to be better next year for them. The main reasons for that are that good health and a huge, unsustainable turnover rate helped propel them to historical dominance this year. Those are two impossible to control factors that will almost certainly regress next year.

I think the sample size is too low to really matter. You have to look at it case by case. Both sides will be better next year. No signs show it won't.

Iirc, Bob Thomas also became a lofty Justice. No wonder they never won a playoff game

Tobin never coached in the NFL until he got the Bears' DC (highest was USFL DC). Pagano is a proven defensive coach who has had plenty of success in the NFL.

I still think Donatell was the way to go but this is a solid hire. Didn’t this dude have heart problems or cancer tho? Could swear he had some sort of serious medical condition..

Was Indy’s defense good while Pagano was there? I don’t recall that being the case but maybe it was..
