I think Dan McNeil is an example of a guy who has mastered his craft.

I don't think Mac is the smartest guy. I think he's an excellent broadcaster. Very skilled.

Look, it's sports. You don't have to be smart. You are exposed only when guys like Larry and Pappy try to talk about non sports issues.

Bernsie is smart and his show is good because of it. I care what he thinks about non sports issues. Bernsie is also a technically sound broadcaster.

I disagree. I think he speaks very well and is the type that can drive a show.

TM - You said enough when you said that you don't listen to my shows. I have never seen the tv show Lost, but I think it's awful and has never been interesting.

My approach is very different than B&B in every aspect of my show.

Brainwashed - hahaha. Been with B&B for almost 5 years...2 with Murph.

I did major in Speaking Poorly...so I guess that college degree worked!!

Laugh it up Drinky. See, that's the technique of brainwashing. The subject doesn't even know he's been brainwashed. Like when Indiana Jones drank the blood in the Temple of Doom. He didn't realize he became a jack ass. It just happened.

I knew you would deny being similar to B&B. None of you guys want to admit to that.

Umm, reading is a skill....that you apparently don't have. I said I haven't had the chance to listen to you lately (as in the past four weeks), not that I haven't listened to you at all. Over the past couple years, I have heard your work on many occasions and have been alienated by your increasingly hostile, condescending tone. If you have changed your approach in the past few weeks, I'd be pleasantly surprised.

Being a douche is also a skill....

I have had roughly 30 shows since March 1st. I'm sure you haven't caught 5 minutes total.....just listen before you make blanket statements because you don't like B&B

I do live to please you though friend.

Why is March 1 an important date in this discussion? Are you saying that you have radically changed your broadcasting style since then? Are you admitting that you once were hostile and condescending, but no longer are? If so, I will make an effort to witness the result of this Kafkaesque metamorphosis by tuning in to your next show. When are you next on?

By the way, your past few posts clarify why you don't allow your callers to spar with you very much before you shout over them or cut them off. You're just not very good at debating, though I'm sure you remain very proud of your ability to intentionally distort the words of others, sling demeaning phrases, and make broad, unsupported generalizations. And why wouldn't you be, since you're deploying all of the verbal weapons honed by Bernstein, the radio model you strive to imitate? Now if only you possessed any of his positive qualities, instead of just the negative ones.

I just used that as a date - lots of shows during baseball season is all.

I don't cut people off and I enjoy a good discussion.

My point is valid because you admit to not listening. There's no need to debate something with you when you have your mind made up nor do you listen. It's very simple to understand.

Can you honestly give an accurate opinion of say a vacation spot that you have never visited or a restaurant that you have never eaten at?

I get it, you don't like my show. You don't like North's show. You don't like B&B. That's fine. You are just way off on your opinion of how I deal with callers.

So much for the "Say something nice about Drinky" thread.

I couldn't even keep it on that track and I started the thread.

Drinky are you serious?

No one on the board has gone back and forth with TM more than I, but he mentions in previous posts here that he has listened often. The more you respond and ignore the posts he has made here, the more you make his point valid. Is this a pattern that Mitch found redundant and became tired of also.

Bringing it back to the intent of the thread.

Drinky, you're not insultingly stupid like Pappy. You don't suck as much as Larry, Goff, and Zach.

Again, I have listened to you for many hours on the radio. In fact, when you first started hosting, I was one of your biggest supporters on the board.

While I think you are undeniably talented--moreso than Murph, Paruch, Holmes, Fred, Boers and Hanley (the last of whom I like a lot)--I became disenchanted with your shows when your "fun-loving" radio "populism" gradually transmogrified into an elitist anti-populism that specialized in ridiculing "ignorant" positions championed by the "unthinking" masses. I take this transformation to be typical of the evolution the station itself has undergone over the past decade: A radio station that once could legitimately be called "the voice of the fan"--especially in its cultivation of "celebrity" callers who made massive contributions to the Score's early years--long ago became the chief antagonist of the fan. The B&B show has functioned as the avante garde of this descent into a kind of neoliberal cultural forum devoted to the degradation and humiliation of the masses--operating as the sports talk equivalent of reality TV shows like "Fear Factor" and "American Idol"--and many of your own shows have replicated this aesthetic.

In the early days of its existence, the Score established its cultural relevance by challenging the accepted sports narratives fed to us by disingenuous team executives and their lackeys in the print media. Having instrumentalized this "anti-establishment" attitude to capture a listening audience, Score hosts today frequently signify their alignment with the values and attitudes of the sports, media and corporate elite by focusing their critical faculties on fan behavior and thinking as much as they discuss the teams that the fans are interested in. Your shows, drinky, are both a symptom of and a contributor to this phenomenon.

I'll third that. And if you're at a remote he always offers to call a cab if you even hesitate on the "are you OK to drive" question when leaving.

Do some homework before you accuse somebody of always drinking and driving.

McNown, I did do my homework and I was very accurate with what I said. He and his radio partner on the "Last Call" were laughing about driving drunk a few years ago. That was enough for me to write him off and not listen tohis show ever since. I don't have to listen to every show to have an objection to something I did hear at some point in the past. That's what I did. I'm glad to hear he has grown up on that issue and is now more responsible about it.

I am going to take TM and drinky to dinner at Olive Garden so they can discuss their differences in person and make up.

Laughing about Pappy doing it.... that I could see. But get to know Matty at all and it is HIGHLY unlikely that he was making jokes with Jason about himself driving drunk.

Since I don't remember the show from several years ago as clearly as you do I may be wrong on that one.

I think Drinky admitted on the air that he got a DUI. I think he said he got it a year or so ago.

He said how stupid he was and that he was glad the cops pulled him over before he killed himself or somebody else.

So if he once joked about it he no longer does. I've heard him on the air telling people to be safe. Take cabs or walk home.

This was an excellent read. And I agree with a lot of what TM says about Drinky.

Drinky, I became a big fan of yours because at first you seemed to be the "Anti-Bernstein". And of course who could forget the few days you were a guest host on the North show and challenged North on all of his dumb ass thoughts? In fact, most people agree and speculate that because you didn't kowtow to him like Fred does, he has not asked you back on the show. I was on Drinky bandwagon.

And then you changed to something a Bernstein mult - and it turned me away. I would say that Paruch has jumped ahead of you in the Score's NEXT or whatever you would call it because Paruch is a good talker, knows what he is talking about, and treats the callers with respect.

All that being said, I still hope you'll get more opportunities to host.

While the most polished and knowledgeable "bench guy" at the station, I think Paruch would benefit from a partner because he is too affable.

when b+b eventually move on from the afternoon slot, a show with goff, abbatacola, and paruch would be pretty amazing.

I think Goff and Abbatacola are better separate than they are together. Last Call was entirely too giggly and inside jokey for my liking. Additionally, Goff's personality becomes more assertive and well defined when he is apart from drinky.

I don't share the love for Paruch. He is a good backup host, but he strikes me as more than a bit of a cipher.

TM - I have to be honest. I didn't read your long post. I'm sorry. I logged on today with the intentions of saying this :

You have the right to your opinion. I can't argue that. If you feel that I became too B&Bish then I can't disagree. You were a big listener from the start and I always expressed my appreciation for that.

I'm sorry that I argued with you about your opinion. That's just it, your opinion.

I have put a conscience effort to create my own sound and atmosphere in my solo shows.

All I can ask is that you give me another shot. Listen to a few shows for as long as you are able and then give me your thoughts. I would appreciate any comments. That goes for everyone....

I felt bad last night thinking back about the pointless arguing.

My next shows :

Saturday May 31st 11am-2pm live at Stretch Run corner of LaSalle/Ohio - it's a great OTB and sports bar...any message board guys that come by and identify themselves get a shot and/or drink on me.

Tuesday June 3rd 6-6:35pm

Saturday June 7th Noon-3pm

Sunday June 8th 5ish-6pm

For the record :

I don't recall making fun of or laughing about driving drunk. I'm sure I had talked about it in the past. If I was making fun of it, then I'm an idiot.

I did get a DUI in 2005. It was one of the worst things to ever happen to me and one of the best things to happen to me. Since that experience, I always make an effort to share my experience and encourage people not to drink and drive when I'm on the air. I end all of shows with that. It's important to me.

That's all I have to say about that.
