"The Commissioner has the sole authority to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary and/or corrective measures if any club action, non-participant interference, or calamity occurs in an NFL game which the Commissioner deems so extraordinarily unfair or outside the accepted tactics encountered in professional football that such action has a major effect on the result of the game."

If the NFL decided it did qualify, Goodell, the rulebook continues, could change history:
"The Commissioner's powers under this Section 2 include . . . the reversal of a game's result or the rescheduling of a game, either from the beginning or from the point at which the extraordinary act occurred."

 Never going to happen...but wouldn't that be quite the scene....lets play the whole game again

I don't think that you can count out Goodell abusing his power.

How would it be abusing his power if he followed what is written in the rule book?

You're right it wouldn't be abusing power but using authority that no other commissioner ever used.

I mean this is something hardcore Saints fans would want to see but its like my dream of the POTUS declaring state of emergency and arresting all (((journalists))). In that it needs to happen but would result in major civil unrest so its probably not worth it.

Yep. Take away that one call, and you could easily say that the Rams got screwed by the officials.

Crazy game.

Its happened in baseball before where an appeal is won and a game or part of a game is replayed. It happened with the Cubs not too long ago, and the George Brett pine tar game was also replayed.

If I knew a bunch of Rams fans I would want to see this happen. I don't though, so not worth it

Only the bottom left one was missed.

People misunderstand the play clock. It isn't meant to be an immediate whistle when it hits 0. That's why there is no buzzer like there is in the NBA. The official is to see it go down to 0 and then look to see if the ball is snapped. In effect, it's a 41 second playclock. If they started calling it then teams would simply be snapping it a second quicker.

Even then, it's a 5 yard penalty on second down. It wasn't a penalty that literally would let them kick a field goal with virtually no chance for the other team to tie it up again.

to me the Rams played a slightly better game, so its fitting they one.

It was really an even matchup.

Also, I think the Rams match up better with NE because they have better legitimate pass rushers up the middle.

The Saints play pretty good D as a team but dont have the dogs up front.

If that is the only angle I don't know what the penalty is. It isn't illegal to have the back of your hand on a facemask.

I believe he clearly jerked Goff's facemask on that play. It happens, it was quick but it was worthy of a flag if it had been seen.

Actually no part of the Pine Tar Game was replayed. Once the Royals won the appeal, the teams met again later in the season and resumed the game from the point where Brett hit his home run (which occurred with 2 outs in the 9th inning). The Royals made the final out of the 9th once play was resumed and then the Yankees went 1-2-3 to end the game. They did it in an empty stadium on a day off for both teams if I remember correctly.

Honestly, I don't remember seeing the play in real time. I'm going off the picture that was posted. Only the bottom left is a missed call based on that.

Of course both sides have missed calls in a game. That doesn't mean all missed calls are equal. I'm sure if you offered the Saints one of those calls to be made and the correct call made on the PI they would take it.

I could see the commissioner using this as a ruling in a game where during a play, an earthquake struck or a bomb was detonated within the stadium during the play... suddenly nobody is paying attention to the game, you could have a RB keep running and easily score. I'm sure the game would be suspended, but the commissioner would say you pick the game up before the play, not after the end of the play.

Other than that, it is hard to come up with a reason enough where you would cancel a game (or part of a game) and replay. The Rams dress a guy up in Saints sideline gear and have him equipped with a listening device so he can relay the playcalls to the Rams DC? Even logistically, this seems too hard to pull of in real time.

The Patriots will try this next year.

When it's all over and the Super Bowl has been decided, MOST of the Saints players will have already thought to themselves, if not out loud, that all Sean Payton had to do was run the ball three times and they would have been playing in a Super Bowl.
