Reports have SD offering player option in yr 5. No reports of the Sox offering one.

So if you are willing to do 250 for 8....why not be willing to go 300 for 10? Is 2 years really a sticking point for a guy you supposedly really want?

Machado wanted the 300MIL guaranteed. Not 250 + whatever crazy incentives the White Sox tried to sell him.

Do you know how to do division? What's more 250/8 or 300/10?

There are no surprises here. Eveybody knew exactly what he wanted and have known it for a year. 10/300. That's what he wanted.

Sox had a higher per year value but what are the chances he gets 2 years for 50 million after this contract ends in 8 seasons?

The difference is a little over a million per year which is peanuts in a 300MIL contract. Obviously Machado wanted 300/10 and not 250/8.

If the White Sox deal was better then why not go 300/10?

Intense sense of honor would not let them offer a worse deal.

Are you seriously suggesting the Sox weren't outbid? If the Sox were married to 8 years with no player option, you have to replace the years and the option with MONEY.

They obviously didn't and obviously were outbid.

Are there team opt-outs in this deal?

I dunno. Whatever it took, the Sox didn't do it. Enough with this "Sox offer was better" crap. If it was better, he'd be flying here.

The superstar infielder rejected a contract offer from the Chicago White Sox that would have been worth more annually than the deal he accepted from the San Diego Padres, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Tuesday, citing sources. Machado is expected to join the Padres reportedly on a record-setting 10-year, $300 million contract, and the lure of guaranteed money from the Padres was more powerful than the potentially larger figures the White Sox were offering.

@Ken_Rosenthal
Second source says total value of #WhiteSox offer could have reached $350M if all options were vested and every incentive was reached. But Machado, as believed all along, wanted the $300M guarantee.

Yep.

Commission is higher on the 300.

Plus, lets be Frank Cozstanza here for a moment: There are bikini babes in San Diego, and pierogi-stuffed Polish Brahds in Chicago.

Those discounts really helped “us” with the three signings in 2018 and Heyward. Great value.

I'm sorry that you aren't a really big fan of 4 straight (and counting) playoff appearances, three NLCS appearances and 1 World Series during this current era of Cubs baseball.

Yu Darvish is going to make a lot of people eat their posts this season, and beyond.

I am sorry that you don’t realize those guys did not take discounts to come here and have been mostly wasted money up until now. Harper won’t be here because of those bad contracts, the so called opportunity cost.

So you want to use hindsight 20/20 when it comes to a few of the Cubs large free agent contracts (selectively avoiding that big contracts to Lester and Zobrist are huge reasons the Cubs won a WS) but you want to heavily assume that a Bryce Harper 10yr/$300MM contract would have no chance of becoming an albatross contract.

Got it.

They'd better. If they don't sign him (or Haper) this offseason was a complete and utter failure.

Frank,

Is it fair to call the offseason a complete and utter failure?

Yeah pretty much (barring the 0.10% chance they sign Harper). The Sox still made a legitimate offer to Manny. You can disagree and be wrong, but $250mil is not some cheap normal Sox offer.

It's a cheap offer when you know the price to play is 10/300.

Anyway, I'm glad you agree that the Sox totally failed on this one.

Ok, so you (and gd) are wrong and it seems that IT WILL REMAIN THAT WAY.

You're gonna have to pick a lane, champ. Either dolphin and I (and you, before yesterday's news broke) were right and it's an utter failure by the Sox, or we are wrong. Can't have it both ways.

These things are not mutually exclusive. There doesn't have to be a lane chosen here, because both of these things are correct;
The Sox made a legitmate offer to Machado.

The Sox offseason is a failure.

I can make a much stronger argument that they negotiated in bad faith all along than you can make that they made a legitimate offer.

They knew in advance that the parameters of a contract for either of these players was a player opt out (as has become industry standard for the bigger FA). However, they decided in advance that philosophically they could not offer such a clause. So any contract they made was never going to be accepted.

So you're saying that the White Sox "WSCR 2008 Mike North Contract Offer'd" it?
