In any case, I think the child as activist is largely an upper class conceit. I remember during the 1976 presidential campaign when I was in middle school, most of the Jewish kids I went to school with were very interested in the campaign, all of them supporting Carter just like their parents. In my house I was expected to be seen and not heard. To my parents the idea that a 13 year old could have any kind of informed political opinion was just craziness.

Of course there is a tradition of intellectual dinner table conversation in Jewish homes that yield adults like Curious Hair. We talked about the weather and the White Sox and I had to make my own way.
