Not much of a history, unfortunately, but a moderately interesting five-minute read.

MJeff, Dick Butkus, Payton and Ali were public school kids.

As were Wilt, Alcindor and Jesse Owens.

The run of Gordon Tech soccer championships in the late 70s/early 80s deserves its own chapter.

I was a forward. I'm pretty sure we never lost in the Catholic League. We tied with Quigley South once. That was a tough game in cold and mud. It's possible we lost to Brother Rice with a young Mully once. I don't remember for sure though.

He lived right near Quigley--that's where his parish was--but I hope he didn't go there....yikes.

I'm honestly not impressed with that list. Try harder.

I do like how Catholics claim Bill Russell at USF. They left out a certain Bull with the initials of QD, though.

I forgot he went to USF. I always think of him as going to college at the University of the New York Knicks.

I looked up an old interview with him and it appears he did go to Quigley. That makes sense because I think he was a good player and they were the best CCL team besides us. Now that I think of it, maybe Brother Rice didn't even have a soccer team. I don't know. That was a long time ago.

I'll never forget that game at Quigley in the mud, though. We should have lost but Wally Cimiak scored a late goal to tie it up. I think he may have scored our other goal too. Quigley's best player was an African or Jamaican guy. He was a tough motherfucker.

Mully is a St Thomas More guy.

How many CCL schools even had soccer teams?

And no, SICP doesn't count.

Most of them. Fenwick may not have though. I had the best game of my career against SICP. It was in Grant Park where they played their home games.

We did not have a team.

And thanks for confirming for why SICP didn't count.

My freshman year roommate went to Brother Rice. Always thought the school colors were terrible. I just looked up CCL on wiki - there are some equally awful color schemes throughout - minus the green & white of course.

I've long held that Brown and White was a better color combination--not to mention more descriptive of ALL of the races in this country, like Latinos and South Asians and Italians.

They count, too.

Yeah, when they took the field they looked like they should have been guarding the Pope.

I briefly dated a bartender who dated Quentin. She told me a couple of stories that weirded me out enough to not call her again. Or go back to her bar.

I think it has to be South based on where he lived. I doubt he was going all the way downtown. Also, I don't think North had a soccer team and if they did, they didn't play in the CCL. Hell, now that I think about it, I'm not sure South was in the league, but I think for soccer they were.

At my first teaching job we had two kids attend Quigley from a school in the south suburbs. Most of the kids who went Catholic usually attended Marian and Marist from that place. Quigley closed before they graduated and they ended up at the local public school to finish out.

Which one closed first, South or North?

I have a couple cousins who went to Quigley. When I was kidding my aunt about trying to get a priest she rolled her eyes and said they went there because it was cheap.

North closed first.

I still see St. Rita and want to call it Quigley South.
